5 of the deadliest massacres in Nigerian history
As a nation with contradicting values, and ever-present tribal, religious and political tensions, Nigeria has witnessed its share of violence throughout its history; in the form of riots, war and in many of these cases, mass killings.
Events only ever hold relevance beyond a particular period for Nigerians. The effect of this is that we tend to forget some of the darkest periods of our history.
It is not out of a desire to push the past into the abyss, at least not on the part of the masses. It is mostly caused by an innocent lack of information.

It is why when we hear reports of mass murder, like Nikolas Cruz’ murder of 17 students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida in the US state of Miami, we are often shocked.
It is so easy to overlook when one does not know that this is a reality that we have lived, albeit in a different form, in the past, and more recently that we would permit ourselves to admit.
Here are 5 of the deadliest mass killings in Nigerian history, for those who wish to remember that death has always been a part of our history.

Capital punishment, with methods of execution ranging from hanging to shooting, is a legal penalty in Nigeria.
In 2017, Amnesty International called on the Nigerian government to stop the planned execution of some inmates on death row in Lagos State but the government rejected the call, pointing that the death penalty is expressly authorized by section 33 of the Constitution of Nigeria.
On December 17, 2014, 54 Nigerian soldiers were found guilty of conspiracy to commit mutiny and they were sentenced to death by firing squad at a trial held secretly by a military tribunal.

Homophobia: How Police and the public have driven Nigeria's gay people into hiding

You're probably friends with more gay persons than you know, and you might be oppressing them.
Despite the vocal activism of persons like Bisi Alimi, many Nigerians defiantly insist that the country has no gay people.
This is not true, of course, what they have is a denial of the obvious that is based on suppressing a culture they do not approve of until it no longer exists.
In parties held in hotels around cities like Lagos, men find a space to be openly gay, the Guardian reports.
At one of such parties, the turnout is low but men sit, fiddling with each other’s hair as music and drinks fill the space, anticipating more members of an oft-maligned society.
Nigeria is one of the five most homophobic countries in the world, and while there are activists who make a case for the country’s LGBT persons to be afforded their rights, being gay in Nigeria is a death sentence.
ALSO READ: We need to talk about homosexuality in Nigeria, mostly because of straight women
While the hostility towards gay persons has always been a part of society’s fabric, the Same-Sex Prohibition Act, which banned gay relationships and institutionalised intolerance was signed into law by former President Jonathan in 2014, all but certifying all forms of injustice against LGBTQ persons.
In July 2017, at Club Owode in Lagos, 70 men and boys were arrested by police.
"In the majority of these cases, the police extort funds from them, knowing that any court case will out their sexuality”, says Okoye, “For most of them, their single wish is to pay and get out, and the police use it against them”
But it’s not just law enforcement.
Are you trying to get rid of gay people too?
After the names of members of the House of Rainbow Church, an LGBT friendly ministry in Abuja was published in the newspapers, about a dozen of its members were attacked and beaten.
Omolara Oriye, a director at the Initiative for Equal rights told the Guardian that since the beginning of 2017, the spate of violent attacks had reduced, instead what has increased is extortion, blackmail, infringement of the right to assembly.
Gay persons often have to move in secrecy due to the hostility that they face on a daily basis. In Nigeria, it is no different.
Most of them keep their orientation and relationships hidden.
It explains why, when they have gatherings it is in secluded places, where secrecy and privacy are paramount.
But even at that, some of the participants are pressured or coerced into ratting out their peers. In other cases, they simply can’t be trusted.
A gay man shared a story of how his friends lived in his home for over three years.
“Some of them had lost or left jobs because people had found out about their sexuality, some of them weren’t allowed to be around their own family”, he says.

“I was paying for everything, our food, our bills, even giving them money to go to places they needed to”.
Then one of his friends had a party while he was away. One attendee took pictures and tried to blackmail them, saying he’d show the police.
It should be said that this behaviour of extortion and underhanded practices is not unique to homosexuals. The Nigerian Police had a soiled reputation for unprofessionalism and corruption.
The Police is not your friend
Just recently, a social media campaign under the hashtag #EndSars highlighted the brutality of the Police’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad with photos and accounts of beatings, extortion and in cases, murder.
This is possible mostly because many Nigerians do not know their rights and when they do, they can be pressured into believing in that time and place, they do not matter.
For gay people, it is more extreme: they are a demographic whose lifestyle is viewed as indecent and so, finding support in the face of oppression is very unlikely.
To fight this and to help their peers find safety in the country of their birth, many activists have put their foot down and resources in place to protect their interests.
Azeenarh Mohammed, a 32-year old lawyer based in Abuja, is one of such.
“You live life here as a gay person, knowing that there’s no future in Nigeria if you want to live an open life, but I really wanted to change that”
In 2011, she spoke at a hearing in the National Assembly about gay rights, even though the lawmakers expected her to talk about the environment.
This sort of defiance is what it takes, but perhaps more importantly, we must also unlearn our homophobia.
The impact of narratives taught by religious institutions and families is instilling homophobia in a new generation.
This generation of LGBTQ persons may be safe in hiding but the problems that have created this circumstance are getting worse.
Wizkid: Hearing Daddy Yo in “Pacific Rim” made me want to fight for Nigeria

I wanted to fight with John Boyega, side by side in my own Jaeger painted in Lagos colours with the full version of Wizkid’s song playing in our ears.
International recognition is worth its weight in gold for most Nigerians, So it is understandable that we reacted like we’d won the lottery when British-Nigerian actor, John Boyega ‘disclosed’ that Daddy Yo, the 2017 single by our favorite mainland boy, Wizkid, would be featured in the second instalment of the Pacific Rim series.
Yes, he may decide to try out a few foreign accents once in a while or refuse to come home for an entire year, but Ayo Balogun is a national treasure.
Over the past few years, he has been one of the main ambassadors of the Nigerian sound. Snagging a few minutes of play on one of the most highly anticipated action-fantasy blockbusters of the year was another step in that direction.
The Hollywood star had in December disclosed that “Pacific Rim: Uprising”, would heavily target Nigeria as a main marketing spot.
Boyega on his Instagram wrote “One of the most exciting things about producing Pacific Rim Uprising was the opportunity to influence the creative choices.
”So I put @wizkidayo song “Daddy yo” in the movie. Jaegers need afrobeats too!"
After months in the works (people call these things “rollouts”), the movie finally released on March 22 in Nigeria.
I definitely looked forward to seeing machines the size of skyscrapers beat monsters to a pulp, but even though I could play a couple of thousand nairas to hear music anytime I want, I really just wanted to hear Wizkid’s debut in Hollywood.

It lasted between 10–15 seconds.
John Boyega, the movie’s lead character, was at a crossroads between being a Philistine and ‘responsibility’ when he was narrating his reckless lifestyle.
The scene where the music comes on is like a montage of a party scene and the after party mess.
Daddy Yo comes on as we see Boyega ‘enjoying the life of his head”, and then, as quickly as it starts, it ends.
I was slightly pained.
A part of me expected that I would have the chance to get into the groove of the song, or at least, examine how the movie’s scene would interact with the music.
But the short cameo did one thing.
It made me identify with John Boyega as a Nigerian more than anything else, so when he went out in his Jaeger to fight the monstrous Kaiju, I wanted to fight with him, side by side in my own Jaeger, painted in Lagos colours with the full version of Wizkid’s song playing in our ears.
I reckon that’s what these songs do. A song like Daddy Yo creates a connection between you and the movie that makes you invested in it.
You may be tempted to feel like this means the world is paying attention to us like we did when Captain America brought his caped crusaders to Lagos in “Captain America: Civil War” and they are, but for the money more than how good the Jollof Rice tastes.

Nigeria has a population of over 150 million people. It is the single largest economy on the continent, which means for investors and businesses looking to explore their frontiers, it only makes sense that they market their products to Nigeria.
“Pacific Rim is very important to me because Pacific Rim will actually be the first movie that I have done that I would heavily target Nigeria as a main marketing spot,” John Boyega said, in the lead-up to the movie’s release
One unintentional effect of this, though, is that it heightens your sense of loyalty and identity. Hearing Wizkid’s Daddy Yo on a blockbuster with a Nigerian in the lead makes you… proud of your country.
For years, the perception of Nigeria in the outside world has been determined by Nollywood, Internet fraudsters and corrupt politicians.
Recently, our music and creative talents, in general, have done well to paint us in a better light, and after years of ignoring the obvious, the world is finally turning their heads our way.
So in many ways, even though Pacific Rim tanked at the Box Office and was panned by the critics, it was a very big win for Nigeria.
God Is Good: Knife removed from man's brain in 5-hour surgery

A fight at a bar put a South African man in a situation where he had to fight for his life.
A knife has been removed from the brain of a man, Tshepiso Mothibi‚ in a five-hour surgery conducted by doctors in Magogoe, South Africa.
The 23-year-old patient was reportedly stabbed on the head when a fight broke out at a bar he was having drinks at.
This happened on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, according to Times Live News, which added that the victim immediately rushed to the Tshepong Hospital for medical attention.
CEO of the Klerksdorp/Tshepong Hospital Complex, Polaki Mokatsane, described the operation as a complicated one.
“The surgery took five hours to complete successfully. The patient underwent craniotomy to open a portion of the skull.
"The knife was carefully disengaged and withdrawn from the brain in a controlled manner, without causing internal bleeding or injury to the structures of the brain.
"This patient was very lucky. Had the object cut through the major internal carotid arteries or injured the brain stem‚ he could have lost his life," says Mokatsane.

Racism: Can we start jailing bigots in Nigeria just like in South Africa?

South Africa just sent a white woman to jail for hurling racial slur at a black police officer
South Africa has jailed a white woman for screaming racist slurs at a black police officer.
The event has brought back harsh reminders of apartheid and a subtle jolt that there are still remnants of the system of segregation in South African society.
In 2016, a video clip of the incident between estate agent Vicki Momberg and the policeman whose name has been withheld went viral.
In it, the officer attempted to help Momberg after thieves broke into her car at night at a shopping centre.

Momberg refused to be helped, insisting she would prefer the assistance of a white or ethnic Indian officer.
Her reason? That black people were “plain and simple useless” and “they are clueless”.
She also referred to the policeman as a “kaffir”, an apartheid-era slur used to refer to a black person and one of the worst terms of hate speech in South Africa.
A groundbreaking verdict
After a long trial, Momberg was sentenced to three years of jail time, with one year suspended, for directing offensive slurs at the officer.
The ruling is believed to be the first time a person is going to jail for using racial slurs in South Africa’s storied history.
Previously, persons convicted of the same crime have been let off with a fine.
In a world where Donald Trump is President of the United States and movements like Black Lives Matter have gained global significance, the bias and behaviours that have been termed racism have become more important on a global scale.
The case is usually made that racism is now an institutional problem, something that you can only notice in how companies hire staff or who is more likely to win an election, for instance.
But as instances like this show, there are many overt instances of racism but the perpetrators rarely suffer any sanctions for their misdeeds.
It is a major point of the demand for equality; that racism is no longer viewed as a cultural relic that occasionally rears its ugly head but seen as the very present evil that it is and criminalised accordingly.
That is the obvious first step, but the long journey is in eliminating racism from all society until no man is judged by the colour of his skin.
Is there racism in Nigeria?
The importance of this may be lost on persons who live in countries like Nigeria where the population of white persons is miniscule enough that racism is not particularly felt, but that, in itself, is a misconception.
Many Nigerians who interact or work with persons of other races are ofte subjected to inhumane treatment for no just reason. This is very common among unskilled workers.

To be fair, it often goes the other way too. Nigerians can view caucasians as "soft" and treat them accordingly.
Even at that, the extent of its prominence is negligible. But still, you cannot avoid it when you eventually make that trip to Europe and you're received like the slightly-civilised monkey that your hosts see you as or when in a firm with white colleagues, you stagnate, despite having obvious skill.
Our real problem is tribalism, a system of bigotry that has taught us to look down on our fellow nationals because of their tribe.
We have a war and several uprisings and massacres as testaments of just how deeply this problem runs.
Of course, it will take a lot of effort to discard such perceptions but sending bigots to jail is a good place to start.

Brymo: Here's what singer was trying to tell you in his "Heya" video

Brymo's "Heya" is now popular for the singer's bare behind but he was really trying to tell you a lot more.
Since returning to the fold of independent artistes, Brymo has shown a knack for pushing the boundaries and exhibiting a form of original artistry that is rare in the Nigerian space. But none of all the things he’s done in the past, not even that time he painted himself in black and sat on a stool could have prepared us to see his black African behind in the video for his new single, “Heya”.
Except you’re one of Bobrisky’s fans, no-one wants to see another man’s butt.
Brymo’s artistic endeavour has drawn a wide gamut of reactions. There are those who believe this is an attempt at faux brilliance from an artiste who seems so desperate to carve his own niche and distance himself from the rest of the bunch.
Brymo’s fans though believe otherwise. For them, this is another masterclass, a moment of brilliance from an artiste whose ability is yet underrated.
It’s easy in times like this to get embroiled in the hoopla that Brymo must have expected when he put the video together, or to think more about how he’s using his bare buttocks to sell his album.
Between the leather covering over his masculine parts, his emergence from the dark water into a sparse, desert-like field of ruins and the emotive nature of his singing, Brymo’s “Heya” video has little to do with sex appeal and more to do with the idea of being a modern African.
The video is heavy with symbolism, starting with Brymo’s resigned appearance from a stark, dense body of water with a piece of leather that leaves his cheeks at the mercy of the elements.
A tribute to African identity
It is a throwback to an older time when African civilisations manipulated leather and plants into pieces of clothing, a time that Brymo pays respect to more because it was before the intrusion of the white man and colonialism.
Hear the man tell it himself.

In an e-mail to Pulse Nigeria, the alternative folk artiste said, “ I decided to appear how my forbears dressed before the arrival of civilization to Nubian continent,”
“We have all seen the costume in many movies, “Heya” was my own representation of that age; A bushman in the city, that’s my image of most black Africans of today. Although we reside in cities, we are still villagers in our thoughts and actions”
It reminds you of one of the few African civilisations which have retained its culture through the years.
The San Bushmen are a tribe of hunter-gatherers who live in Southern Africa.
The tribe originally refers to themselves as “San” or “Saan”; the suffix “bushmen” was added by the white men ( which I say at the risk of over-flogging the same “anti-colonialist trope) to qualify the fact that they, despite the urbanisation around them, have preferred to live in the bush, in what has been their habitat for centuries.
Regression, brought on by Ignorance
Brymo addresses this perception, that Africans are backwards because we do not fit into western ideas of what civilisation is.
Moving from that body of water to a stark desert-like clearing refers to the loss of our values and originality that has been induced by the pressure to fit in, to meet certain standards.
ALSO READ: How Western influence broke spirituality and identity in African music
It is, at its most basic form, regression brought on by ignorance. The kind that invites pity, or at the most Nigerian form of it, a shout of “heya”, if only you had known to do better.
The reaction online is mixed, and many BrymO fans think it’s exactly what they wanted to see,” says Brymo. “For those who disagree with the image, I understand that they have forgotten how people dressed across the continent many centuries ago, or they couldn’t fit the costume to the story in the song… but what better way is there to tell the story of our disloyalty and disservice to each other, if not by bearing it all, butt and what not… lol."
No-one could have put it better.

Tragic: Son of House of Reps member shot dead in the UK

The son of a Nigerian MP, Dolapo Badru, is the tenth person to be murdered in London within a 12-day period.
According to the Daily Mail, Abraham Badru, 26, the son of a House of Representatives member, Dolapo Badru, has been shot dead in the United Kingdom.
The deceased was killed late in the evening on Sunday, March 25, 2018.
He was murdered close to his family home in Dalston, Hackney. The young Badru was reported to have died at his mother's side who was in tears as she held on to him on the pavement according to The Daily Mail.
His death makes him the tenth person to be killed in a list of murders that have occurred in London over a 12-day period.
Reports of gunshot in the area had attracted the presence of the police who found him lying on a pavement. He was confirmed dead shortly after the discovery.
"As soon as I heard the bang, I knew it was a gunshot. I'm ex-military and knew that couldn't be a firework.
"I went to my balcony and saw a man slumped over on the ground at the back of a car.
"There was just one shot and a cry of pain. No speeding scooter and no speeding car.
"I didn't see anyone make off," a neighbour told the Daily Mail News.
"His mother came out and saw him on the floor. It was terrible listening to her collapse crying on the floor. She was just screaming.
"Everyone was very upset and I had to go away, I couldn't take it. It happened on our doorstep and I had to say a little prayer for the family," another witness revealed to the Daily Mail in a statement.
The Evening Standard, also reported that young Badru earlier received a recognition for his heroics in the year 2015, "for saving a woman from a sex attack."
He reportedly worked as a football coach after earning a Master's degree in the same year.
Like most people who recognise the deceased, his father Dolapo offered an inspiring opinion about his late son.
“A few years ago a girl was raped on the estate and Abraham fought them off. He went to court to testify against them and the police gave him an award," says the proud dad.
Dolapo Badru is a House of Reps member representing the Lagos Island and belongs to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In Sokoto: Court remands businessman for allegedly being in possession of 5.25kg of Codeine

According to the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Codeine is a narcotic pain-reliever and cough suppressant similar to morphine and hydrocodone.
A Federal High Court sitting in Sokoto State on Wednesday ordered that a 51-year-old businessman, Emeka Obi, be remanded in prison for alleged being in possession of 5.25kg of codeine controlled drugs.
According to the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Codeine is a narcotic pain-reliever and cough suppressant
similar to morphine and hydrocodone.
Justice Saleh Idrissa, gave the order after NDLEA Counsel, Beatrice Igberaese, prayed the court to remand the accused.
Igberaese told the court that possession of codeine, a narcotic substances similar to cocaine contravened Section
20 (a) of NDLEA laws of the Federation Cap (30).
She urged the court to remand the accused because he had violated an administrative bail the NDLEA had given him before.

Facebook: Why you should be worried that this social network has your call records

Facebook knows too much about you... way too much.
While it faces the heat from a data scandal where it ‘allowed’ Cambridge Analytica to download sensitive data belonging to millions of people, Facebook has now admitted that it had been collecting and storing data about call logs and text message for millions of Android users.
Following the Cambridge Analytica scandal, many Facebook users were interested to know the true extent to which the social media platform had violated their privacy. One user went a step further to download his data found that the company had collected a record of the date, time, duration, and recipient of calls he had made from the past few years.
He made these revelations on Twitter, spurring several users to download their data and share their findings.
On Saturday, the tech news site Ars Technica published an account of several others — all Android users — who found similar records.
For years, conspiracies have circulated on the Internet about how Facebook supposedly listens to its users’ conversations via the mobile app.
Some of the videos you will find point to a particularly interesting piece of evidence; after having phone conversations, they get targeted with ads relating to whatever they just talked about.
Facebook has repeatedly denied these allegations in the past.
Even now, it’s not admitting to listening to calls, just keeping metadata or information relating to call logs, records and duration.
"Targeted... everything"
All of this is useful for one main purpose; Facebook wants to give you exactly what you like.
The social network thrives off holding your attention and it has been trying for years to become the epicentre of whatever you do on the internet.
Already, Facebook has adjusted how posts appear on your feed to give you what you are interested in first.
There’s also a more financial twist to the whole thing. Facebook’s main customers are brands and companies, not people.
ALSO READ: 3 Reasons why you might need to leave Facebook
What it sells is advertising and access to its massive subscriber base.
Mark Zuckerberg’s baby needs to sell ads and the value of its ads is directly related to how successful they are and how they convert into clicks and purchases.
Big Data, as it is called and its use for targeted advertising is what sets tech companies like Facebook apart from the rest and makes them so successful.
As of the fourth quarter of 2017, Facebook had 2.2 billion monthly active users. With this comes access to data filled in forms or observed from their activities on the network. It uses this data to determine their traits and what they are likely to buy. Then it sends them ads they are most likely to respond to.
All of this sounds very sketchy because it seems too much like a company is using information about you to take advantage of you, but it’s legal.
Also, you kinda agreed to it in the terms and conditions before you could open your Facebook account.
But what happens when a company collects that data illegally and uses it to send you targeted political campaign adverts based on your traits and preferences?
That’s what Cambridge Analytica did in the United States and reportedly tried to do in Nigeria.
Facebook already has an obscene amount of data about its users. Monitoring calls violates the users’ privacy. That sort of information could be lost to persons with worse motives or turned into a weapon to unfairly target a set of people, like ICE already does.
The agency uses data from Facebook to target persons believed to be illegal immigrants and deport them, in line with the United States’ new immigration agenda.
The prospect that big corporations may be using all this information to push specific agendas is certainly troubling, as one can deduce from the widespread outrage that has come in reaction to the recent revelations.
The danger of inherent bias
But an even scarier reality is that Big data is not exactly accurate or free of bias.
ALSO READ: Cambridge Ananlytica's parent company reportedly manipulated Nigeria's 2007 elections for PDP
After noticing that her search results on Google were followed by adverts asking “Have you been arrested”, Latanya Sweeney, a black scholar conducted a study which showed that the machine learning tools behind Google’s search are racist, associating black names to ads relating to arrest records.
Because big data is collected from a wide range of people, it is bound to reflect common large-scale associations or perceptions.
In the end, when the platform does things based on those biases, it seems to create an agenda that the platform does not even intend.
So who should you be scared of? And why?
Because in a world where your browser history is studied to tell you what to buy, free will is becoming a myth.
An advertiser can use big data to ensure that it advertises to the right people; a presidential campaign can use data to spread propaganda and sway votes by pandering to exactly what they care about.
The lines between the two are very blurred, but the latter presents a future where your privacy is a footnote and the sacrifice for premium service and efficiency across your life is basically access to everything about you.
We don’t want that.
