According to the premium brand, the Nigerian national football team paraded one of the youngest teams at this year’s World Cup and played some of the most exciting football, which won them admirers and plaudits around the world.

Trophy said it is confident that the team will be world beaters in couple of years from now, even as it called on Nigerians to continue to support them.

Trophy had put in place a few activities to rally support for the team, before and during the World Cup. Among these activities are, #RaiseATrophy campaign, which was aimed at supporting the team at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The campaign was undergirded by the belief that when confronted by challenges, Nigerians have always risen to the occasion and achieved the impossible as evidenced by its being the first African team to win the football Olympic gold medal, among other feats.

The National Team had shown this spirit when it shrugged off the defeat to Croatia to beat Iceland comfortably.

“The Nigerian Team may not have progressed to bring the World Cup trophy home, but we will continue to raise the Trophy lager beer to the team for putting up a good fight. Cheers to the National Team,” the Marketing Manager, Funso Elubeku said.

International Olympic Day: Uniting the world through sports

International Olympic Day: Uniting the world through sports

During the Olympics it is much easier to break down the barriers that often keep Nations at loggerheads.

The Olympics is a rare occasion where 204 countries from around the world come together in the spirit of friendship and sporting endeavour; it is like a sporting United Nations.

During the Olympics it is much easier to break down the barriers that often keep Nations at loggerheads. Through sport, we can remember that there is much more that unites us than divides us. The Olympics represents Love between Nations.

As 2018 marks the 70th Anniversary of Olympic Day, the IOC has launched a global campaign “United By”. The campaign aims to bring together stories, experiences and events of Olympism from around the world.

What is Olympism?

Olympism is more than the Olympic Games, more than the Olympians themselves partaking in the games; it’s a philosophy of life that seeks to blend sport with culture and education, for the benefit of humanity.

The main goal of Olympism is to place sport at the epicentre of the harmonious development of humankind, with a view of promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity.

It is about the coaches, the volunteers, the ground staff, the parents who drive the athletes to practice and perfect their crafts, the teachers, the community workers, and everything in-between the athletes; who are the people that make sport happen every day for themselves, their friends, families, and communities.

Olympism is the power of the Olympic values - Excellence, Friendship, and Respect – in every part of life to deliver a better world now, and in generations to come.

Continuing this Olympism in 2018, the IOC is launching its very first Olympism in Action Forum (OiAF) in Buenos Aires, Argentina on the 5th & 6th of October, 2018.

WE ARE ALL UNITED BY OLYMPISM!

Lagos Tanker Fire: "Foolishness" kills Lagosians who stopped to take pictures before Berger explosion

Buhari says tanker fire is "one of the greatest tragedies" recently

A witness who observed a petrol tanker explosion that occurred on Otedola bridge yesterday thinks victims had an opportunity to save themselves but acted late.

Perhaps the lives of 9 people earlier reported dead may have been saved if some acted promptly when a petrol tanker fell on Otedola bridge located in Berger, Lagos.

A Twitter commenter @Otunbakush who lost his mobile phone during the tragic accident was angry at the deceased who he thinks died because of their foolishness.

He shared his thought in a thread posted today. Feeling pained over what he considers an avoidable death, the observer scolded the victims for their slow response when the incident occurred.

It was gathered that a vehicle transporting fuel hit a structure designed for road demarcation following an illegal parking by a bus. This invited the devastating accident which is not the tanker driver's fault according to @Otunbakush.

Fresh accident on Otedola bridge

There is no respite for Lagosians after two buses crashed into each other on Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway on Friday, June 29, 2018.

This happened a day after a devastating petrol tanker explosion at the location.

According to an eyewitness who spoke to Pulse, a 'Danfo' vehicle illegally took the one-way route, on the other side of the road from the previous day accident but crashed into a white Toyota Hiace bus with registration details AAA-926XU.

Many passengers were injured with one person struggling for breath before he was rushed to a hospital by officials of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) who were already on the scene because of the previous day's accident.

Preliminary account from the scene of the accident indicate that the driver of the danfo bus was speeding because he was running from officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) after he violated a traffic law.

Pulse Opinion: Here's why you should think twice before getting a job in Lagos

Lagos traffic congestion is often experienced irrespective of the time

You cannot be comfortable because everywhere you turn there's a mix of everything. And if you're not careful you will burn out.

There's nothing that you'll not hear about Lagos.

It is the place where everything happens. The haven where dreams find oneness with fulfillment. Lagos is the city where impossibility is nothing.

It is also said to be the only state in Nigeria where jobs are available for anyone who cares to work.

With an estimated population of 21million people (according to the National Population Commission of Nigeria in 2016), and a whopping 123,000 people migrating into the city on a daily basis, as stated by Rotimi Akinwunmi Ambode, it is believed to be the most populated city in Africa despite its small mass.

Nevertheless, what is unknown to most people who come to Lagos based on what they've heard about it is that, for every day one wakes up into the intense pressure that cannot be separated from the city, one may find self living a life that is not considered normal outside the state.

It is this abnormality that makes it almost impossible to find an average worker on a nine-to-five with a happy face while commuting to work as well as the return trip home.

Due to the high level of development on Lagos Island, it is believed that most of the available jobs in the city are located there. Nevertheless, a low appreciation in wages has stopped most employees in a bid to get an accommodation close to their workplace; and as a result, a greater number of them find solace in affordable houses on the mainland.

Thus, in order to get to the office on or before the time of resumption, traffic congestion which prevents early arrival at work is experienced as a norm. This happens as early as five or six in the morning, as the case may be.

The farther you live from the Island, the earlier you programme yourself to leave your bed; and where a percentage of Lagosians leave for work in order to arrive early at 5am, for some, hitting the road an hour earlier is a daily business which finds them sleeping in transit.

Unarguably, you cannot be leaving in Abule Egba or Ikorodu and leave for work at 6AM. If you do, it merely means you're not ready for work.

Such is the nature of this disorder that if 7AM finds you at home by chance on the mainland, you're in for it.

However, apart from the psychological imbalance that cannot be separated from this disorder, there is also the issue of health implications.

Recent studies have it that the importance of getting enough sleep cannot be overemphasized because it plays a vital role in good health and well-being throughout our lives.

"45 minutes of sleep can make a huge difference. We get our deep restorative sleep in the early-morning waking hours when REM sleep occurs. If you shorten that, you are going to feel unrefreshed, and you’re not going to have enough sleep," says Damon Raskin, MD, a sleep expert affiliated with Concierge Choice Physicians in Pacific Palisades, California.

Heart attack, diabetes, and obesity are some of the challenges associated with an insufficient amount of sleep which can experienced in an instant or build up over time as revealed in another study.

Sleep deprivation also causes fatigue, daytime sleepiness, clumsiness and weight loss or weight gain. It adversely affects the brain and cognitive function as well.

Be that as it may, it would have been better, or even healthier if the average Lagosian gets home before 7pm to counterbalance the unavoidable sleep loss. But then it is not the case.

If coming to work in the morning is characterized by stress and delay, going back is worse and tedious.

In fact, there are people who get home at either 10 pm or 11 pm, as the case may be. And there are others who instead of spending four to five or even six hours in traffic, stay back at the office till 11pm when the road is free to some extent, before leaving for their respective destinations.

Of course, a good number of them gets home by 12 am, to wake up by four, and hit the road again at five.

Unable to meet up with this toxic fast pace of Lagos, are the group of workers who would rather travel to work on Mondays with everything they need for the week, and return home on Fridays to spend the weekend with families and friends.

For them, the everyday rush and bustle of Lagos is just too much to handle.

They find it more comforting to sleep over at the office than face the stress and tiredness of going home. At least, if not for anything, it helps in saving the money budgeted for transportation.

"For young people coming to Lagos to get a job,  it's important to always have it at the back of your mind that you are not going to get a big job and a big payday in your first week or month," says Jude Egbas, a news editor at Pulse

"Things are not so easy in Lagos.  Lagos is as tough as elsewhere in Nigeria,  if not tougher.

"What is important is to have a mindset of starting small and be willing to do odd jobs if it comes to that.  If it means living in Iyana Ipaja or Ikorodu for a start, why not?

"But have a goal in mind and keep honing your skills or talents as well, because that's what will eventually help you ascend the ladder in a very chaotic and mean city like this one," he concluded.

Besides the issue of Lagos' distorted lifestyle, there is also the issue of time which burdens the mind and heart of the average Lagos worker like a ghost from a forgotten dream.

You cannot be working nine to five in Lagos and have some quality time to spare. The fast pace at which the city carries everything that is in it forbids it!

There is only time for your job and everything that surrounds it. There is no time for familiarities like it is elsewhere; because working nine to five in this city binds you to just three places - home, the road and one's place of work.

These, among other reasons, are why there is a low level of interaction between people living in the city despite the fact it is a small place populated with over 20 million people.

"Relationship in Lagos is to some extent based on where you live," says Agnes Marquis, the director of Play Studio, Ringier Africa.

"You cannot be living at one extreme far away from where your partner lives. How will you find time for each other?

"Of course, people will always find a way to meet if they want because they can squeeze out time, but it can be very difficult sometimes due to the situation of things. No doubt, Lagos is a great place to live if you live well. The city has something to it. There's a vibe here. You can see your dream come to pass here.

"But at the same time, it can be crazy for people working nine-to-five. Lagos is not a place to work nine to five."

"Like, how productive can you be when you stay in traffic for over six hours on a daily basis, conjoined with the things you go through to have a normal life in this city?

"You cannot be comfortable because everywhere you turn there's a mix of everything. And if you're not careful you will burn out. Nevertheless, it is important to have a set goal if you're working nine to five. Know what your end goal is, and work persistently towards it. You must also try as much as you can to manage your expectations, and be realistic because everything that glitters is not gold," she adds.

ALSO READ: 27 years after, the ghost of the oppressed has refused to rest in peace

Essentially, it should be infused into the consciousness of everyone migrating to Lagos that life in this city is not as easy as it is displayed in the movies and on social media.

To a reasonable extent, it is nothing close to it if you're working nine-to-five.

Yes, Lagos is a mega-city where spending a million Naira in the club is perceived as normal. It is the home of celebrities, company CEOs, and the live fast riders who are willing to do anything for the money.

True, Lagos is the haven of the most luxurious apartments and a mixture of everything.

But it should also be emphasized that though this coastal state is the center of excellence in many things, anxiety and depression, live on the roads through which the city carries everything that is in it.

Demolition Man: Man takes down female squad who called him a rapist in #BergerToAjah sexcapade

Man takes down female squad who called him a rapist

A man's response to a rape charge has inspired the alleged victim to come up with a better explanation clearing him of the accusation.

Today, the hashtag #BergerToAjah became a hit on Twitter after a female commenter Damilola Marcus accused a man of raping her friend. His comeback was brutal.

The alleged rapist Uche Daniel it was gathered forced the 'victim' Bimbo Ajao into have sex with him. This reportedly happened against her will but he denies this report.

A screenshot displayed on Twitter showed the comments made by Marcus alleging rape.

It appeared a response to an earlier mention by Daniel.

One of his remarks touched on anger as he vowed to bring his accusers to the law if they ever cross paths.

She explained an earlier experience of rape had encouraged her to give in to Daniel after much pressure.

Bimbo Ajao understands that recent development has made her an unpopular figure on Twitter but she has made a resolve to live with the result.

Nigeria: From Plateau to poverty, our country has had a very bad week

Nigeria has had a very bad week

Nigeria has dealt with internal crisis, bad international rankings and a painful World Cup defeat in just one week.

This week has been a week from Hell for Nigeria and it's just Thursday.

Plateau killings

The week started off on a bloody and sad note. On Sunday, June 24, 2018, there was a deadly clash between farmers and herders in Plateau state. The body count was unfortunately high. Initial estimates placed the lives lost at 86. According to international media, the number is above 200.

The violence is the latest from the herdsmen crisis which has escalated within the last year into a serious and complex problem that the Federal Government has found difficult to solve.

The Vice President and President travelled to Plateau later in the week to meet local leaders and sympathize with the lives lost. Despite their attempts, there is a still a general mood scepticism that little or nothing will be done about the herdsmen crisis.

Poverty capital of the world

While still dealing with the aftermath of the bloodbath, the World Poverty Clock announced that Nigeria is now the poverty capital of the world on Tuesday, June 26, 2018.

According to its current estimate, around 643,527,400 people all over the world, 8% of the world's population, are currently living in extreme poverty.

Of that figure, an estimated 86,977,400 are currently living in Nigeria, a number that accounts for 44.2% of its current estimated 196 million population.

According to the World Poverty Clock, the poverty in the country is still rising with a negative escape rate of -5.8.

At its current progression, Nigeria is expected to have 119,766,229 people living in extreme poverty by the year 2030.

The Federal Government has responded to the figures by the World Poverty Clock, saying that the figures are outdated. This was the first bruise on Nigeria's international reputation this week.

Super Eagles defeat to Argentina

On the same day, the Super Eagles painfully left to the 2018 World Cup in Russia by losing to Argentina 21-. The national football team conceded a goal scored by Marcus Rojo in the 86th minute. Football and heartbreaks.

Coming into the World Cup, optimism was sky high based on global attention of our jersey and the individual talent brimming in our squad. Sadly optimism does not yield precious 3 points.

After a mediocre display against Croatia, the Super Eagles flew and demolished the Vikings for Iceland only to lose painfully to Messi and his gang.

It was a sword in the hearts of millions of Nigerians who not only wanted the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2nd round but finally defeat Argentina in a World Cup game.

Lord knows what Thursday, Friday and Saturday have in store for us. Nigeria is in dire need of some good news, something to cheer us up. As a Nigerian, we know the country comes with a lot of stress but with back-to-back-to-back-to-back bad news, we need a break from the struggle we live in.

American Mega Millions: How Nigerians can play for the $232 million jackpot

You could win the biggest lottery prize in the world without leaving your home in Nigeria!

The American Mega Millions lottery awarded a $656 million USD (103 billion NGN) jackpot prize to three lucky winners in March 2012, a record many thought would last for quite some time.

In January 2016, the other huge American lottery, Powerball, stunned the world when it awarded a $1.6 billion USD (318 billion NGN) jackpot. With prizes this high, people everywhere want to try their luck at winning an enormous lottery jackpot.

Nigeria’s avid lottery players undoubtedly share dreams of lottery riches but the top prizes in local lotteries draws pale in comparison to those offered overseas. With the Mega Millions jackpot currently at $232 million USD (83.6 billion NGN) Nigerians are eager to play Mega Millions but traveling to the United States to purchase lottery tickets is not really feasible.

Now there is a way to play the Mega Million lottery from your home in Nigeria!

How do you play American lotteries from Nigeria?

The easy available solution for Nigerians is using the services of theLotter, the leading online ticket purchasing service. TheLotter uses local agents in the United States to buy official lottery tickets on behalf of its customers from all over the world. The website charges customers a transaction fee and in return they receive a scan of any ticket purchased before the draw. No commissions are taken from winning tickets.

The system works, as can be seen in the stories of two lottery players—one from Panama and one from Iraq—who won huge jackpot prizes without ever setting foot in the United States.

Woman from Panama wins $30 million Florida Lotto jackpot prize.

Despite being retired, Aura D. from Panama had continued working to support her kids. She had only been playing with theLotter for about two months before she scored her big win—the first place prize in the Florida Lotto. Aura was the sole jackpot winner in a July 2017 draw, entitling her to the entire $30 million USD jackpot minus taxes.

Iraqi wins Oregon Megabucks jackpot without leaving Baghdad.

Baghdad resident M.M. had been playing lotteries at theLotter for only a few months when he decided to take a chance at winning the $6.4 million Oregon Megabucks jackpot in August 2015. The Iraqi's lottery win was such a unique story that it was reported in the New York Times, the Daily Mail, NBC, CNN, and in the Associated Press. All of them noted that it was perfectly legal for foreigners to win American lottery prizes by purchasing official tickets online at theLotter.

Mega Millions once again has a massive jackpot.

Players are impressed by how easy it is to purchase official lottery tickets online and they have come to trust the purchasing services of theLotter. Playing the lottery online at theLotter is safe and secure and over the years, theLotter has paid out nearly $90 million in prizes to almost 4 million winners from across the globe. Players can purchase tickets to the world’s biggest lotteries including Powerball, Mega Million, EuroMillions, the Italian SuperEnalotto, EuroJackpot, and more.

Playing Mega Millions, with its guaranteed jackpot currently set at $232 million USD, is now possible in Nigeria as well. Online ticket purchasing service theLotter can help make dreams of lottery riches come true.

Nigerian Women: The alarming reasons why our country is not safe for our females

Research shows Nigeria is 9th most dangerous country for women

Nigerian women face a lot of obstacles due to tradition, sexism, terrorism and poverty.

According to a new research by the Thomson Reuters Foundation, Nigeria is the ninth most dangerous country for women to live.

Other countries ahead of Nigeria in the ranking are Afghanistan (2), Syria (3), Somalia (4), Saudi Arabia (5), Pakistan (6), Democratic Republic of Congo (7), and Yemen (8). The United States ranks in 10th position and India in the 1st position.

This has been a bad week for Nigeria in terms of public relations. Nigeria is now the poverty capital of the world according to the World Poverty Clock.

In the Thomson Reuters Foundation, Nigeria is the fourth most dangerous country for women when it comes to human trafficking and the sixth worst for women regarding customary practice which include acid attacks, female genital mutilation, child marriage, forced marriage, punishment/retribution through stoning or physical abuse or mutilation and female infanticide/foeticide.

Also, Nigeria ranks 10th in regards to sexual violence on women including rape as a weapon of war, domestic rape, rape by a stranger, the lack of access to justice in rape cases, sexual harassment and coercion into sex as a form of corruption.

Human Trafficking

Within the past year, illegal immigration has been brought into the nation's conscience. The Libya slave scandal exposed a can of worms.

At the heart of the illegal immigration crisis, is sex trafficking. Every year, thousands of Nigerian women cross into Europe illegally and sold as prostitutes by their pimps (madams) who lured them with fake employment offers.

In 2017, the New Yorker wrote a well-detailed, eye-opening and investigative piece on a young Nigerian girl by the name of Blessing. The article gives a background explanation on why young women in Edo state are sold into slavery.

In the 12,000 word article, Blessing starts her perilous and treacherous journey from Benin in search of financial stability in Europe. It's a harrowing experience which shows how Nigerian women are abused and murdered during this journey.

Blessing was lucky not to drown on her way to Italy but others have not been lucky. In November 2017, 26 young Nigerian women were killed at sea. The tragic story caused a global reaction.

The Nigerian women who are lucky or unlucky enough to make dry land are quickly sold as commercial workers. They work territories controlled by the Nigerian mafia. Far from a little operation, the Nigerian mafia has made headline news for battling for territory with the Italian mafia.

For the Nigerian women sold as sex workers in Europe, it's a life of hell and hardship. In March 2018, 39 Nigerian sex slaves were rescued by Spanish authorities.

There has been a response to the sex trafficking problem. In March 2018, the Oba of Benin forced native doctors in the state to revoke curses placed on victims of human trafficking. There is no result on if the unorthodox act has worked.

Wrong Customary Practices

Female genital mutilation - Nigeria has the highest number of female genital mutilation in the world accounting for 25% of the estimated 115–130 million circumcised women in the world.

In 2015, former President Goodluck Jonathan signed a law that banned FGM in the country. Despite this, FGM still persists in the country although it has declined in the South-East region of Nigeria by 25% since 2000.

Early marriage in Nigeria is still common. According to a UNICEF 2017 research, 17% of Nigerian girls are married at 15 and 44% of Nigerian girls are married at 18. Apart from robbing young women of fulfilling their potentials, early marriage also causes VVF - Vesico Vagina Fistula. According to several reports, Nigeria has the highest number of VVF cases in the world.

ALSO READ: Nursing student gang raped, stabbed to death

Cases of VVF are prevalent in Northern Nigeria. Child marriages and VVF aside, the North East region of has been the battleground for the war against terrorism. Women and children have been victims of the war against Boko Haram. Two clear-cut examples are the kidnapped Chibok and Dapchi schoolgirls.

While most of the Chibok schoolgirls are back home, we cannot forget the few who died in captivity and the girls who married members of the terrorist group and cannot come back home. A Dapchi school girl still remains in captivity for not denouncing Christianity.

Over 2 million people have been displaced since the fight against Boko Haram. Most of these people lived in internally displaced camps in the North.

While this should be a shelter for these victims, recent findings have shown this is not the case. According to a report by Amnesty International in June 2018, several women in IDP camps said Nigerian soldiers raped them in exchange for food.

With regards to rape, there is little hard data about it in Nigeria. However, it is hard to miss a story of rape on news sites every week. And these are the cases that get reported. There is a culture of silence regarding rape and that is why victims of rape, sexual assault and domestic violence rarely speak up in Nigeria.

While there have been online conversations about the problems, Nigerian women face, we must face the facts that our country is not safe for them.

Brand assures super eagles despite descent

The team which was unlucky in its first and third games, have now crashed out of the competition after being defeated 2 - 1 by La Albiceleste of Argentina.

The most anticipated quadrennial tournament kicked off on June 14 in Russia.

The 21st edition, is being contested by the Senior national football teams of qualifying countries including the Super Eagles. This year, the premium malt brand, Amstel Malta has backed Nigeria’s team - the Super Eagles of Nigeria, as their official malt drink.

The team which was unlucky in its first and third games, have now crashed out of the competition after being defeated 2 - 1 by La Albiceleste of Argentina.

Nigeria’s third game of the mundial against Argentina started well with the Super Eagles trying hard to penetrate the defence of their opponents. The Argentines however, stood their ground and were able to keep the Super Eagles at bay. The first goal of the match came from Lionel Messi who was able to get the ball past goalkeeper Francis Uzoho to the back of the net.

This is the fifth time Nigeria would be defeated by archrivals Argentina at the quadrennial event. This leaves Nigeria with no additional point to enable a progression to the next stage.

Reacting to the outcome of the game, portfolio manager, non alcoholic drinks, Nigerian Breweries, Ngozi Nkwoji said “The Super Eagles of Nigeria gave their best and despite the result of this competition, we will continue to urge them to greater heights”.

Nigerian Breweries through its premium malt drink - Amstel Malta, entered a partnership agreement with the Nigerian Football Federation as the official malt drink of all the national football teams including the Super Eagles.

Evolution: This new sex doll rejects sex if disrespected or it’s not in the mood

This news sex doll rejects sex if it’s not in the mood

Of late, many men have developed delight in resorting to sex dolls for sexual pleasure rather than real women, which has caused lots of problems in marriages as men hardly give any attention to the wives’ sexual needs.

Just as women turn down request for sex by their partners sometimes, sex dolls have also been upgraded to do same if either disrespected or not treated romantically to put them in the mood for sex.

Of late, many men have developed delight in resorting to sex dolls for sexual pleasure rather than real women, which has caused lots of problems in marriages as men hardly give any attention to the wives’ sexual needs.

Though many people have condemned the trend, saying it is evil, some men are using sex dolls anyway.

Apparently, to give patrons of sex dolls maximum satisfaction as possible, manufacturers are always trying to enhance the mode and functions.

Dr. Sergi Santos, the creator of Samantha the sex dolls has upgraded the doll in such a way that it is able to reject sex if its partner shows disrespect or mishandles it.

The upgraded mode is reported to have been demonstrated at the Life Science Centre in Newcastle.

The Independent UK reported that the sex doll is activated if a sensors under its skin detects that a partner is aggressive or if Samantha is bored by its partner’ s advances.

It is reported that Dr. Sergi Santos initiated the upgrade at the request of his wife after Samantha was “heavily soiled” last year at a tech fair presentation because some people treated it “like barbarians”.

The new upgrade is more or less a public education campaign to make men understand that they need to have the consent of their wives before sex.

When it finally hits the market after mass production, it is expected to cost about £3, 600 ($4, 700), according to Dr. Sergi Santos.

Social Media Journalism: The worrisome trend and the impact on legitimate business concerns

Recent travails of FCMB, GTBank and First Bank.

On June 25, 2018 I woke up to yet another social media trend – a news story with the bold and quite salacious headline “How Safe Are Customer Deposits At FCMB?” had taken over the digital airwaves.

Between the shares and likes and comments, a storm in a cup had brewed to great proportions in a matter of hours.

Yet again, a demonstration that the basic ethics of responsible journalism and ethical reporting have been thrown away in business and, indeed, everyday life.

In writing the article, the author had made detailed reference to alleged cases of fraud involving staff of FCMB and went ahead to imply that perhaps the bank’s depositors funds are unsafe.

It is quite of great concern to see so-called professionals go to town with such alarming headlines, with the full knowledge that most Nigerians will not bother to read the actual details.

It is indeed of greater concern that this sort of material was released in the way it was, when by his own admission, the author had received specific information from the bank about its financial performance and ability to remain a growth driven and existentially sustainable institution.

I do not have an account with FCMB, neither am I in any way connected to the bank or its principals. I, however, do have the simple capacity to read between the lines and remove chaff from substance.

In the first place, for FCMB to have increased its shares in Legacy Pension to make it a full-fledged subsidiary as reported in this article, it means the bank is forward-thinking and focused on both diversifying and improving its service offerings and earnings.

That’s a bold move, when you consider that the Pensions industry in Nigeria has the potential to be bigger than the banking industry in another decade or so.

But even more interesting is the fact that by his very own article, the author admitted that FCMB’s deposits grew to N689.9billion as at the end of December 2017, an increase of 5%, from N657.6billion in the corresponding year.

Do customers increase their deposit in a bank they have fears over or which is on the brink? Is it not only logical that customers are only likely to increase deposits in a bank where they enjoy good service and feel at home? For a fact, I know that the KPMG Banking Industry Customer Satisfaction Survey 2017 placed FCMB in 5th position in the entire Nigerian banking industry in Retail Banking, SME Banking and Wholesale Banking.

That’s no mean feat when you take into account the number of operators in the industry.

I think what stumped me the most is the fact that by his own article, the author let us in on key financial metrics of FCMB, including the fact that FCMB reported a gross revenue of N169.9 billion and a profit before tax (PBT) of N11.5billion, while profit after tax (PAT) was N9.4billion.

At face value, it seems to me that the author for reasons best known to him or her was determined to demarket FCMB and portray it in the most negative light possible.

I do not dispute the possibility that there were some fraudulent activities – afterall, there is no smoke without fire and that tends to ring through more in Nigeria than elsewhere.

However, this is an industry challenge – the Managing Director of the Nigerian Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) Adebisi Shonubi (who a few weeks ago was nominated a Deputy Governor of Nigeria’s Central Bank) recently shared some startling statistics on fraud in Nigeria’s banking industry, revealing the number of reported fraud cases in Nigerian Banks had steadily risen from 1,461 in 2014 to 10,743 in 2015, 19,531 in 2016 and 25,043 in 2017.

It has been argued that frauds in the Banks are not alien. In the United States of America it has been said, with compromised credit cards and data breaches often in the news in the past couple of years, fraud is top of mind with many people.

This deliberate attempt to demarket FCMB for reasons best known to the author also brings to mind the most recent attack on GTBank over the Innoson case.

It is not to be forgotten how earlier this month, social media went agog with news that a court had directed GTBank to pay 12 billion naira to Innoson Group, one of its clients with whom it has had a long-standing court battle.

The misleading reports on social media had extremely sensational headlines such as “Court Orders GTBank To Pay 14bn To Innoson”; “GTBank Must Pay Innoson 14Bn Within 14 Days”; “GTBank In Trouble As Court Orders Payment of 14bn to Innoson”.

It was such a terrible jamboree on social media that there were certain broadcasts sent across Whatsapp and other social media asking people to withdraw their funds from GTBank immediately, on the premise that the bank would go bankrupt after payment of N14bn to Innoson. Of course, Nigerians will not pause to ask whether paying N14bn in settlement can actually cripple a bank that is widely considered Nigeria’s biggest bank brand and clearly, one of the most solid financial behemoths within the African continent. Nobody stops to ponder.

The fact that this latest melee was a result of seemingly deliberate attempts to smear the GTBank brand raises more suspicion about the recent publication on the same online platforms questioning the safety of depositors funds with FCMB.

The GTBank vs Innoson saga has so terribly deteriorated on the account of sensational journalism and reportage, that it has taken an ugly ethnic dimension amongst the unlearned. Thus, on various online communities and platforms in Nigeria, you see Nigerians taking sides on the basis of GTBank being a “Yoruba company” and Innoson being an “Igbo company”. What a sad reality for a nation!

First Bank of Nigeria also witnessed the harsh and merciless bite of sensational reporting when recently there was commotion over the contempt judgement against the Bank and some of its key officials in the case Chief Isaac Osaro Agbara & 9 Ors. v. Shell Petroleum Development Ltd, Shell International Petroleum Ltd and Shell International Exploration and Production BV. Before fact could be removed from fiction, so many broadcasts and “breaking news” articles had surfaced online, all leading with headlines that were designed to damage and not just state the facts.

To make progress as a country and support businesses to thrive, this approach must be arrested. Must we sensationalize everything just so we can earn readership and our 5 minutes of fame, to the detriment of businesses and companies that provide livelihood for thousands of families across Nigeria? I think not.

Even where we need to address real matters arising, surely, the reporting can be more facts-based and less about blackmail and demarketing. As my Yoruba friends have a saying in their language “Even if they sent you on the errand as a slave, deliver the message as a free born”. Crying wolf falsely too many times has serious downsides.

Social media credibility is extremely important for the dissemination of relevant, topical, up to date and authentic information. Using it constantly as a vehicle to settle scores, blackmail and seek for attention will ultimately harm the reputation of not only the charlatans in that field but also the real professionals.

The fake news toga will be cast on all. That will be a big shame. Freedom presupposes responsibility. Freedom devoid of responsibility is excessive liberty.

These institutions need protection and we really need to stop portraying ourselves to the rest of the world as people always thinking of fraud and sleight of hand strategies to make ill-gotten wealth.

There are many honest and hardworking people all over Nigeria. We deserve better than these constant sensational but fake so called 'investigative' write ups.

Chimamanda Adichie: "Women are not special, they are just human" says author

Chimamanda Adichie says women are not special they are human

Chimamanda Adichie gives a brilliant speech about feminism, racism, sexism and identity at the Chatham House.

Famed Nigeria author Chimamanda Adichie has said that women are the same as men and not special.

She said this on Thursday, June 21, 2018, at the Chatham House London Conference 2018 on storytelling.

The Chatham House formally is known as the Royal Institute of International Affair. The 99-year-old establishment has hosted world leaders and thinkers focused on proposing policy on global affairs. In 2015, President Buhari spoke at the Chatham House.

Women are the same as men and not special

In her address, Adichie said that women should not be treated as special but as human beings. "Women are not special, they are just human. Women are as human as men. women are not little gods that have to be worshipped. The danger of this thinking that women are somehow special, are somehow morally better is that if this is true there is a certain level of autonomy they can never truly have" she said.

She also broke down how the world treats women differently from men based off sex.

Different perception of both sexes

"In our world a man is confident but a woman is arrogant. In our world a man is uncompromising but a woman is a ball breaker. A man is assertive, a woman is aggressive. A man is strategic, a woman is manipulative. A man is a leader, a woman is controlling. A man is authoritative, a woman is annoying" she highlighted.

In her address, she has concerns with how the American media portrays the #MeToo movement because "it aligns with that idea that for a woman to be deserving of sympathy she has to be as non-threatening as possible."

Men should read more books by women

According to Adichie,  men should read books written by women as a way of understanding them more.

"I think men should read more stories by and about women, We know from studies that men read men, and women read men and women. Perhaps if men read more women’s stories, they would be more likely to see them as fully human and less likely to see them as objects that exist for the needs of men" she said at the annual conference.

Blasphemy: President calls God “stupid” and “son of a bitch”

President calls God “stupid” and “son of a bitch”

Rodrigo Duterte made the comment on Friday evening during a speech in his southern home city of Davao, which Christians believe amounts to blasphemy.

President of Philippines who was in the news recently for publicly kissing a female worker at an event has sparked rage after he is reported to have described God as “stupid” and a “son of a bitch”.

Rodrigo Duterte made the comment on Friday evening during a speech in his southern home city of Davao, which Christians believe amounts to blasphemy.

Questioning the intelligence and logic of God in relation to the story of creation, the controversial president is quoted as saying: “Adam ate (the fruit of knowledge), then malice was born. Who is this stupid God?” he asked.

He went further to say: “That son of a bitch is stupid if that’s the case.

“You created something perfect and then you think of an event that would tempt and destroy the quality of your work.

“That was your mother and father’s deed – you weren’t born yet, but now you have original sin.

He questioned: “What kind of religion is that?” stating: “ I can’t accept it.”

Following backlash from Christians who form about 80% of the population of Philippines, mostly Catholics, his presidential spokesperson tried to do damage control by asking the citizenry to remain calm.

Harry Roque is quoted as having said: “That is the personal belief of the president,” he said. “We are free to believe in religion and we are also free not to believe in religion.

“The president has his personal spiritual beliefs.”

“We cannot fault the president if he has no sense of hypocrisy and we should accept that because even when he was just a candidate, he never hid that from us.”

Rodrigo Duterte is a known critic of the Christian religion and has attacked its leaders in his country with claims of corruption and sexual abuse.

It may not be surprising if in the near future the antichrist president takes steps to ban Christianity in the Philippines.

We don’t want offerings and tithes from corrupt sources

Archbishop of Kenya's Nyeri County, Anthony Muheria said proceeds of corruption or any kind of ill-gotten wealth must not find itself in the house of God, apparently because the church is supposed to be a holy place.

A Catholic priest from Kenya has warned politicians and businessmen to stay away with their wealth gotten from corruption, saying such monies are bloody and should not be brought to the house of God.

Archbishop of Nyeri County, Anthony Muheria said proceeds of corruption or any kind of ill-gotten wealth must not find itself in the house of God, apparently because the church is supposed to be a holy place.

Speaking at Kabiruini Catholic Church in the county on Sunday, June 24, the man of God lamented the lack of any means of ascertaining the sources of offerings and contributions made to churches before they are accepted.

The archbishop warned: “Whoever knows the money and the funds they bring for building the church is money that is blood money or dirty money should not bring it to the church.”

Men of God are often criticized for eagerly taking monies from their members in the form of offerings and tithe payments and praying for them to prosper more, without any due diligence to figure out the sources of their wealth.

Archbishop Anthony Muheria said: "I wish I had a PH test that I could test any money brought to me and see whether this money brought to me is corrupt or not.”

Well, it appears until such a means is devised to test offerings and tithes, churches will continue to receive them from the unknown sources, because corrupt people are also fighting for space in heaven.

Moreover, it is not every church that cares so much about where their members get their monies from to give as offerings and tithes.

Pulse Opinion: Why we love posting hateful and hurtful messages online

Why we love posting hateful and hurtful messages online

A mixture of human nature and societal conditions have created hate monsters online.

Schadenfreude is a German word that explains the feeling of joy you get from another person’s misfortune.

It’s a common emotion and as much as we try not to admit it, we have had schadenfreude at least once in our lifetime.

For some people, it is just more than once. Schadenfreude is a daily feeling. You can feed these human beings online, dropping nasty and horrible comments on Instagram or tweeting bad remarks about the misfortune of another person. It seems the Internet just brings out the worst in some people.

The story of D’banj losing his 13-month old son is, to say the least. Many of his fellow celebrities and everyday Nigerians have offered their condolence messages. Unfortunately, some individuals are not in this category.

From Twitter to Instablog9ja, these sick people drop nasty comments on the death of the pop star’s child. It is cold hearted and stupid to blame D’banj and wife for the death of their child. No parent wants his or her child to die.

You don’t need a magnifying glass to know social media has become a toxic place. Controversial, inhumane and sexist statements live on social media these days. And the trend is becoming worrying. People say the most hurtful things just to go viral, the elusive lightning in a bottle moment for social media junkies.

ALSO READ: Tobi Bakre speaks about Internet trolls

The chase for virality, however, is not the sole reason why a lot of people have lost their home training. Most of them never had home training in the first place.

The truth is that the Nigerian society is a place where corruption, tribalism and sexism thrives. For every hurtful comment, you read on Instablog9ja, just know that worse and more vulgar words have been used in real life. As a society, we harbour some sentiments that archaic in this new world ad troubling with regards to gender equality and female empowerment.

What you see on social media is just a reflection of this. Online, the comments are more brazen because trolls believe they can hide behind a tiny avatar and say the most hateful things.

The Internet is the Wild, Wild West and in place of bandits looting the countryside, we have individuals who have been badly brought up by their family and the society shooting hateful words at people they do not even know.

Also, in a rat race that is our society, where every man is for himself and God for us all, sometimes we are resentful of people who are successful. You can't understand why the next man is making a headway in life. You grin and smile when he has good news and secretly mock him when he falls on hard times.

It manifests as a like button when there is good news. You will begrudgingly tap the heart shape icon but once there is bad news about a person, here comes a lengthy paragraph of bashing.
