What Not To Do: How babysitters can protect children from kidnappers

How babysitters can keep kids away from child snatchers with evil intention

Seven weeks after she was taken from a church, a little girl Elo Ogidi is reconnected back to her family.

A female babysitter briefly leaves some children she has been assigned to protect. She does not quite understand yet that one second can be the difference in keeping a kid away from kidnappers.

It is a Sunday service at a Christ Embassy Church in Lagos.

A department in the church is celebrating an event so she leaves her seat to get some of the small chops shared for the kids she was watching over.

Before she returned, one of the children, a little girl Elo Ogidi had been taken. But by who?

Seven weeks of anguish and pain passed before Ogidi could be reconnected with her family. She was 4 years old by the time she was stolen from a church.

According to Punch News, she was found at an orphanage in Benin.

Her parents are happy she has been found so they organized a photo shoot to mark her fifth birthday.

Elo Ogidi is among the lucky ones. It is scary what the alternative outcome could have been.

Babysitters can protect kids better by observing faultless safety rules.

1. Don't sleep on it. Keep a keen eye for odd figures

As the world continues to blossom in chaos and insecurity, there is a need for a heightened awareness about how to keep oneself and others you are responsible to from harm.

It has gone far beyond basic safety measures especially when it concerns protecting the little ones from strangers who may be nursing an intention to harm.

When you enter an environment, please ensure that you observe for threats. Also, take note of fire exit doors in case of a general emergency which might destabilize and cause you to lose a child you are babysitting.

2. Don't sleep on it. Be alert and anticipate an emergency

One of the ways you and the child can come out unscathed in a moment of distraction is to anticipate one.

This can help prepare your mind to deal with a problem that might cause you to lose sight of a child you are responsible for.

There is a psychology to doing things. Ask yourself questions a kidnappers will need to answer if the kid under your protection is the target.

This is suited for a public outing. It is mainly where you may face threats beyond your control. At home with the child, there is really no need to anticipate a threat.

Except for the ones you create.

3. Don’t be too trusting when the child’s safety is the subject

In order to sit comfortably, she offers one of the kids to a passenger who sat beside her to carry. The passenger turns into a python and swallows the child.

Branch App: What to do when you have a dream but not enough money to fund it

Well, as a film producer, Disney holds the record for most Academy Awards won by an individual, with 22 Oscars from 59 nominations, so I guess he knows a thing or two about dreams.

Walt Disney famously said “If you can dream it, you can do it”. Sounds easy right?

Well, as a film producer, Disney holds the record for most Academy Awards won by an individual, with 22 Oscars from 59 nominations, so I guess he knows a thing or two about dreams.

Dreams come in various forms and sizes so they can be anything - Maybe your dream is to reach a certain level in your career and you need to take a professional course to help your chances or maybe you just want to start a small business on the side and grow it into a big company.

But how many times have you had a dream without fulfilling it?

And how many times has money, or more precisely, not enough money stopped you from achieving a dream? For some people, this happens all the time.

You wake up one morning with a revolutionary idea but you have no way to fund it, so you shelf it for later. Then you turn on your TV a few months later and find an advertisement about a product not much different from your original idea done by someone else that apparently had the ‘means’.

Boom! Another dead dream.

But what if I told you that the dream didn’t die because you didn’t have money but because you didn’t know how to get access to money to fund it.

You see, the means to fund your goals or dreams doesn’t necessarily mean ‘a lot of money in the bank’. It could be as simple as knowing the easiest way to get a loan. So, what you need to do is ask the right questions before the next time you have a dream. A good question would be: Where Can I Get the Money to Fund My Dream?

If you asked around, you would find that the majority of the businesses changing the face of the world as we know it today do not have ‘a lot of money in the bank.’ They rely on bank loans for the most part, if not for all the parts. But bank loans can sometimes be challenging to get. It takes time, paperwork, salary slips, in-person meetings -- things that not everyone has or has time for.

So where does that leave you, a man or woman starting out with a radical idea and no track record that the bank can work with?

It is easy to think that you do not have a track record or credit history, conclude that you can’t secure a loan to finance your idea and give up your dream. But that is too easy. This is the 21st century, so do not say you have nothing. I bet you use a smartphone and will agree with me that a man with a smartphone could rule the world. Or maybe I should say, a man who knows how to use his smartphone could rule the world. So, now you’re asking, How Can My Android Smartphone Get Me the Money to Fund My Dream?

Well, you could install The Branch App, a mobile app that gives you access to loans in minutes with your smartphone. Instead of requesting for collateral which you may not have, Branch replaces the need for a collateral with a credit score. You can get loans of up to 150,000 Naira on the app, but it starts you off with small amounts and you can unlock larger amounts based on your ability to repay as scheduled. Also, by taking loans and paying back on time, over time, you’ll have a longer time to pay back and your interest rate reduces.

The next question is perhaps, the most important in your chain of right questions -- How Do I Get Started on the Branch App? Chances are that you already have Branch installed on your smartphone. If you don’t, you may want to download it from the Google Play Store. It is as simple as signing up on the app with your phone number or Facebook ID. Then, you can start building up your credit record by borrowing a small amount of money.

Now, you know what to do the next time you wake up with a dream, but just don’t have enough money to get you there. Don’t put it off because you don’t have the money to achieve it. Pick up your smartphone and apply for a Branch loan without leaving your bed.

Remember, you are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream and it gets easier when you know about solutions like the Branch App.

Family: 5 reasons why we should not shame full time housewives

5 reasons why we should not shame full housewives

Modern ideas seen to think being a full housewife as a derogatory duty that demeans women.

For most parts of global history, men were given the harder duties, men fought wars and women were seen as weaker, home keepers who have to be protected.

Incredibly, some tribes didn’t perceive women as anything more than child rearing engines that should only remain at home a gossip.

Though history documents some strong women that rooted against he norm like Efurunoye Tinubu, Efunsetan Aniwura and other female warriors who led inter-tribal wars and were commanders of men.

In Italian history, the Tigress of Forli was an heiress who led men and had more command and authority that her brothers. Nonetheless, most women had to conform to societal rules or get brandished outlaws.

It was not an easy world. Thus, women had to conform or get cut out and no one wants to be alone. It continued like that through history till women were used as objects to seal contracts and deals.

Child rearing became symbolic with the era of undermining women.

It is thus understandable why women still see other women who choose or have to be full housewives as nothing but liabilities conforming to age old standards that undermine and limit women who have been proven to be capable of exploits.

Who is a full housewife?

These are stay-at-home mothers who prefer home-making to employment or paid labour in the capitalist sense.

It is not just women either. A lot of men ignorantly say, “I cannot marry a full housewife.” The only reason I can think of for such is lack of critical thought and lack of empathy.

Nonetheless, we also have to understand the men. More times than not, income has to come from two parties to actually, sufficiently sustain a family with children, as is usually the case.

On the grander scale, only a few men can sufficiently handle the demands of their family independently. These reality scares people who haven’t the means to really carry the weight independently.

Hence, they are vehemently against marrying women who really want to stay at home and only take care of their children.

Despite the foregoing, being a full housewife is still a legitimate job that is even harder that a lot of jobs. It involves chores, child rearing, nurturing, teaching and impacting positively. It is hard and not a job for everybody.

If we find those who can actually do it, it’s best to equally celebrate them. They are nurturing the next generation. It is an exploit that a lot of people would fail at.

For the following, we the have to careful to not shame women who choose to be full housewives;

1.) Child rearing is as hard as any job

Asides the job of taking care of these children, you also need energy to cater to their excesses and trouble making antics. As well all know, talking gets hard, let alone shouting and scolding all day.

This job is sometimes dicey because to properly lead a child, you need great sensitivity to properly impact a child not to falter or fall off. The world is hard enough to make a child derail from imbibed standards.

Some children have strong backgrounds, but falter in the harsh world and show ideals averse to ones they were taught growing up.

It is then a tough job, alongside the energy required to make meals, cater to the home, go to the market and sometimes, still have sex when needed — despite having a maid, yes.

The job is also round the clock while an office job sometimes stops. Women who love this job should be applauded, not shamed.

Someone has to do the job of raising the kids on the home font and keep the house running, while others are on the field doing capitalist exploits. We can all be great in this one world.

2.) You need trust in the person handling your home

In truth, we hear incredible stories about irresponsible or downright improper maids who end up either corrupting your children or robbing you or sleeping with partners and spouses.

The world is wild. If a mother or wife decides to take up that job, why is she being shamed? Women are maternal, meaning they are calmer and more pragmatic than men.

Women are generally also better planners than men, even those employed. Why then are shaming a women for choosing a different type of efficiency?

Could it be that we have become too accustomed to empowerment that we have neglected pragmatism? While nothing is ever perfect, it sure looks like it.

3.) Post-partum, it is usually hard for mothers to leave their children

The natural bond between a mother and a child is no secret. It is common knowledge that everything changes in women when a child becomes a part of it. They give everything to that child, if needs be.

They want to be there every time to take care of it and make sure it is fine. Thus, some women just grow accustomed to that role and psychologically fit into the home setting and the safety of it.

While for some, it is just a phase, others make a conscious decision as for them, nothing else matters than that child; not money or jobs, or even promotion. Should we then shame them for choosing human life over capitalism?

Yes, capitalism fosters our system and it is the reason that women has any chance at all to raise that kid he way she wants. But then, is anything more valuable than human life? That is food for thought.

4.) A core part of feminism is choice and prerogative

Women were robbed of freedom to express themselves by men for so long. Their rights were absorbed under thought regimes and most were forced to conform rather than prosper.

Is it not the priority of the constantly evolving world to have a choice and be allowed to stay with it. Unless of course, that choice could harm the family. Everyone needs to be responsible.

But then, if the husband can handle it. He might need to reason with her.

5.) Employment is hard anyways

The Labor market keeps shrinking and unwelcoming of prospects. It gets increasingly hard to get jobs. Why then should we force any women to remain in that toxic space when a greater job lies at home.

It is easier to trust the mother than the nanny.

However, we need more female participation in the upper reaches of the working class to pick up where people Sheryl Sandberg and Oprah Winfrey left off.

Let’s strive for balance, but generally, not shame homemakers.

Lagos Culture: The various uses of 'bros' and 'egbon' in Nigeria

'Egbon' and 'Bros' are two Nigerian contemporary words that carry various meanings. You might want to watch their use around you

In certain ways, it is a statement of camaraderie, other times, it connotes respect and other times

Africa is about respect and the truth about addressing older people is “Daddy”, “Mummy”, “Brother…” or “Sister/Aunty…” is our reality.

While some people manage to say call their families by their names, and it’s cool, the average Nigerian family with kids address each other with these signs of respect that become norm.

Even worse, some of our uncles, we call, “Daddy”. Nonetheless, as evolution became reality and style became necessary as it was evident that elite Nigerian families do not use those prefixes.

As a fix, Nigerians found replacements like “Bros” and “Egbon” as watered down respect, to retain respect without making the person being addressed feel awkward in public places.

Nonetheless, as the advent of pop culture became real and growth became truth, Nigerians created abuses from normal words like the British.

The British use random words like mong, pipe, knob and so forth as weighty abuse that enter the bodies of victims like bullets from laced enabled sniper rifles.

The use of “Bros” and “Egbon” have now become a mainstay regular pop culture conversations with diverse meanings, while retaining the advent if it.

These days, regular people just want to be addressed by their names as prefixes of respect or their more catchy replacements like “Bros” and “Egbon” are considered unnecessary and archaic.

Addressing people by their names is considered elite and contemporary.

But basically, if it’s not about respect, it will definitely have the general sarcastic tone to it, but in that sarcasm lies that diverse uses of those two words.

Thus, it seems pertinent to examine the various uses of “Bros” and “Egbon”

1.) Respect

Its use is usually genuine and meant to connote respect for older people. Sometimes, people say it just due to its normative value, without the atom of respect.

In such circumstances, anger or hurt is the determinant factor. In such cases, you hear people say “Bros/Egbon…” before unloading a large curse or abuse.

Such instances are usually comical.

2.) Condescension

Use: “Errmm, Bros/Egbon Ade, you nor go come down..”

It’s determinant factor is usually displeasure at such person. Even in some circumstances, older people sarcastically use it to address younger people, to convey the irony of their address.

Sometimes, these ways of address also make people feel less of themselves when the user wields it properly and adds a mad suffix to it as statement.

Imagine saying, “Bros/Egbon, you nor go go carry your potty wey you use pee?”

3.) Sycophancy for cheap privileges

Use: “Bros/Egbon, please help me process this thing.”

At the root of this is desperation to get something done. It’s common in schools and places where a hustle is.

For example, a University admin building where people are rushing to submit documents or at a filling station during a scarcity of fuel.

It sometimes gets the job done, but it rarely stops the user of such words from giving you the sly Yoruba ‘Yimu’ when you turn your back, despite kneeling and prostrating before he got his stuff done.

Usually though, it is used for big headed people, big in respect before anything is done.

Sometimes, it is genuine, but those times are outweighed by the times they are used to subtly derogate upon people.

4.) Derogation

At the root of every use of Bros/Egbon asides respect, there is a hint of derogation.

But the most noticeable use of these words come in the manner Alonge said earlier. It usually lies with the person being addressed, who might feel pressed by the unnecessary respect.

When the addressee starts feeling this way, it just means he’s getting old or should simply shave his bald head which is misleading people.

Nonetheless, the game is the game. In the game, you can’t escape this respect thing… This is no sub to anybody! I repeat; this is no sub to anybody!

5.) Reverse insult — disguised as respect

As from the narrative under “Derogation”, it happens when the addresser intentionally uses it to make the addressee/person being addressed uncomfortable, especially in a public place.

I promise you, only devil’s bastard spawns do this, and they have been cancelled, blocked and thrown out the imaginary window. Nobody shall rush them.

Other times, it is just plain old direct insult, public or private.

6.) Street rep

Use: “Bros/Egbon yen…

Basically, it is what it is under this heading. If you don’t have it, you don’t get it. If you have it, you have it. What it is; street credibility.

Your stance on the streets. A lot of people form it, but get called Egbon/Bros to their own faces and in there lies the discredit.

When you have real street cred, nobody will call you Egbon or Bros to your face because you will be too scary or unapproachable to be called such to your face.

It usually comes with street reverence and pointed fingers as you pass. If you mistakenly flash then looks during any of these pointing sessions to describe you anybody who wants to know you, they just vanish faster than a horrible mess.

It is crazy.

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

Pulse Opinion: It is time for Nigerian Police to revise its policies on arresting gay people

Members of the Nigerian Police Force need to revise their homosexual procedures

In the end, it is about money and sustaining livelihoods, not actually upholding the Law.

On August 26, 2018, members of the Nigerian police force rounded 57 supposed gay men for having a “gay gathering” and “gay initiation.”

Again, it underlines the global problem; prosecution by class.

What is ‘Prosecution by class’?

A form of modern class distinction where though empowered by Law, the law enforcement agencies only work against the lower middle class to the lower class citizens while the middle-middle class engage in he same activities but get a free pass.

In a January 2018 episode of Loose Talk Podcast, LGBTQ activist, Bisi Alimi intimated that gay parties have been around since the early 90s and somehow, we have never heard of an Island raid.

The only times the Nigerian Police Force has deemed it fit storm gay parties, it’s been on mainland, Lagos, where the less than affluent members of the social hierarchy live.

There, nobody has anybody in the upper echelons of power. Basically, it seems the Nigerian Police Force only storm gay parties where they have no prior stake.

Homosexuality is unlawful under the Nigerian Law

Nonetheless, homosexuality is outlawed in Nigeria by the Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act, signed into Law by former President Goodluck Jonathan. Thus, homosexual relationships are unlawful and punishable under the Law. Thus, the members of the Nigerian Police Force are backed too arrest any suspected homosexuals.

However, the problem is that our constitution says everybody is innocent until proven guilty. Thus, why are members of the Nigerian Police Force parading suspects, who have not even by charged to a court of competent jurisdiction, let alone judged before the media as 'gay men' for 'gay initiation' or at a 'gay party'?

Police and media can do better

It is wrong for the Nigerian Police Force to parade individuals as criminals or gay people. It is unethical to parade people as thieves, armed robbers or gay people when they have not been found guilty of any crime.

The Nigerian press should also do better. Some of the questions they asked the alleged gay men who were arrested were embarassing. It is wrong to ask a person how he/she contacted HIV/AIDS.

None of the journalists at the kangaroo press conference have investigated if the Nigerian Police Force did actually raid a gay party. It is just speculations that have morphed into a poor theatre.

Homosexuality is illegal in Nigeria but the Nigerian Police Force should treat gay people in Nigeria with respect. Arresting grown men at a party and calling them gay is wrong. If two men are not caught in a sexual act in a public place then arresting two men at a party is uncalled for really.

Video: Headteacher explains why he wears the same uniform as students

Alex maina Kariuki, headteacher wears same uniform as students

Alex maina Kariuki dismissed claims that he may be demeaning himself by looking like and mingling with students on campus.

Headteacher and principal of Friends School Kamusinga, a Kenyan Quakers National High School located in Kimilili, Bungoma County has made headlines with his choice to wear the same uniform as his students.

Some decades ago, it was considered disrespectful in some African schools for a student to dress better than teachers, and some students got their shoes seized.

Even, till now, teachers and headteachers of certain schools would want to dress in a way that differentiates between them and their students.

However, Alex maina Kariuki has chosen to be different.

When the BBC asked him his motivation for wearing the same uniform as his students, Alex maina Kariuki said he does so in order to “identify myself with the students, to demystify the rank of a principal, to check the quality of uniform my students are putting on, and also, it reminds me of the days when I was a student.”

“Oh my, I feel so comfortable, I don’t feel uneasy at all,” Alex maina Kariuki said.

Inasmuch as Mr. Kariuki’s practice might be weird, it obviously has created a high level of companionship between him and the students, making campus an interesting place to be as well as a congenial atmosphere for learning.

He advised other teachers to emulate his style to identify with their students and create a good rapport with them.

Runs: 3 Kenyan women talk about their preference for "sugar daddies"

Kenyan women leverage on their looks for legitimate cash

These 3 women confidently speak talk about their love for comfort through 'sponsors'.

On April 4, 2018, Pulse revealed the conversations Ghanaian socialite, Moesha Buduong had with Christine Amanpour of CNN about sugar daddies.

The conversation was so nuanced, yet hilarious and incredibly real, representing the realities of a typical African society where women crave the comfort of living their best lives afforded by sponsors -a lavish spending or spendthrift older man, who showers younger women with a great lifestyle, in exchange for regular sexual magic.

The game is the game

On Tuesday, August 29, 2018,  BBC debuted another episode of its investigative series BBC Africa Eye. This time, they focused on women who prefer to date rich old men for the obvious reasons.

Just as in Nigeria where it is widely believed that certain sexually liberated women prefer married men to single men because they offer more stability and ‘funds’, Kenyan women a far more liberated and confident to proclaim their preference.

Despite Africa still being rooted in conservative standards, liberalism has found its way in through a need to live or be known.

In the BBC feature, 20-year-old Jane speaks on about how the conditions of living in Nigeria have affected her lifestyle.

She aims to emulate the big Kenyan socialites like Huddah Monroe and Vera Sidika, living in highbrow areas, having lavish holidays on luxury yachts, with homes in America and enviable lives. She claims her parents raised her right but she chose her own path.

She quips, “What is wrong about sex, anyways? People just make it sound wrong”, to underline why sex is to carried as a special thing. In Jane’s words, “you have to hustle, or you’ll end up on the streets.”

While the numbers were previously speculative, the 20-year old thinks that a staggering 60% of girls in Kenyan campuses have sponsors while the other 40% “maybe” don’t have.

Incredibly, she also knows that these men are married, but need a side chick. While she started off making 5,000 Kenyan shillings at a massage parlour, she couldn’t refuse the side hustle of requests from rich guys who pay for sex.

Jane also believes in brains. She believes that only beauty doesn’t do it, and wants to be respected and make sure her sisters don’t go through what she’s going through.

Bridget is affluent and had a transformation from a house girl. In explicit version, she says, “Kenyan socialite is a woman who goes half naked to attract rich boys in town.”

Incredibly, now rich entrepreneur and socialite, Vera Sidika and star of the Keeping Up With The Kardashians and Real Housewives Mashup, once said, “my body is my business and it is a money maker.”

Huddah Monroe, a graduate of Big Brother Africa justifies posting her half naked Instagram posts with the bucks she’s rolling in.

While showing off her accessories that includes $3,000 shoes and limited edition/exclusive handbags, she says, “I grew up in Kibera slums. The ghetto is about survival of the fittest.

Bridget also confessed that she got molested as a kid and suffered PTSD till she was 25. The magic was when she started in modelling due to her attractive curves.

She says, “When your pictures are all over, all these rich tycoons want to have a taste of this fine, beautiful African woman. They will send you a message in the DM or they send their Pimp.”

Bridget, who already stars on Nairobi Diaries and claims that, “You are a girl looking for money and you’re getting a a guy waning to give you $10,000 just to go visit him wherever in Dubai.”

“It’s crazy things you’re asked to do. We’re told to suck toes, to do what… It’s crazy.”

Bridget however claims that she did it when she was desperate, but it’s not something any woman should be proud of. She says, “Nothing goes for nothing.”

For Grace, she has a steady sponsor that caters to her need. The BBC however reports that she is poor and lives hand-to-mouth by dancing in clubs while struggling to pay bills and care for her daughter.

She is also a singer and cites Vera Sidika and Beyonce as her role models while stating her dream is to become a celebrity — in other words, “socialite.”

She claims her parents tried their best, but it wasn’t enough. Her grit is palpable in her words, “I need to be a star.” to care for her daughter and give her a better life.

Grace says, “I have a male friend and when I call in and tell him I want to pay for my house but I only have money for shopping, and he could give me like 5,000 Kenyan shillings. Sometimes 7 or 10 (thousand).”

She continues, “But the kind of sponsor I need, they’re going to change my life. Having that person is better than selling your body somewhere in the street. To me, that’s better.”

According to Grace, she goes to somewhere called “coast”, which has an array of well-to-do men who will give her “support.”

It’s no fault of these women either, the Kenyan society apparently encourages transaction relationships according to Crystal Simeoni, a gender and economic policy expert.

Man continues to have sex with wife despite suspecting her of cheating

A man who failed to react on time after suspecting his wife of cheating has been forced to accept a child he believes belongs to another man.

Despite suspecting his wife Aisha Buhari of cheating on him, a man identified as Ibrahim Musa continues to have sex with her while she carries a child he thinks belongs to another.

A Sharia court in Kaduna ruled on the matter on Wednesday, August 29, 2018.

The child is now 4-months-old according to Punch News but Musa has refused to accept responsibility.

Malam Dahiru Lawal a judge who listened to the disagreeing parties proved that the man is the father.

“In Islam, when one suspects his wife of infidelity and is in doubt of the legitimacy of her pregnancy, he must raise alarm and inform his (own) guardian and that of his wife immediately.

“But when a man continues having marital affairs with his wife even after the knowledge of the pregnancy, without showing contempt, then it means he has accepted the pregnancy.

“That means he is the father to the child and would take full responsibility for the child,” Punch gathers during the court session.
