Naira Sells at N425/$ As Naira Continues to Regain Strengthen Against Dollar

The Nigerian naira continued to regain strength and appreciate in value in the parallel market on Tuesday as it was sold for N425 to a dollar.
However, it was N450 to a dollar at the close of transactions on Monday.A survey carried out by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday at the Bureau De Change (BDC) market in Abuja revealed that BDC operators bought at the rate of N415 and sold at N425.The BDC operators bought the Pound Sterling at N500 and sold at N510, while the Euro was bought for N420 and sold for N425.For the inter-bank rate, the dollar exchanged for N331.6, Euro 335.75, while the pound exchanged for N394.25Some of the BDC operators told NAN that the provision of forex by the CBN to the commercial banks was responsible for the appreciation of the naira in the market.Sani Ahmed, one of the operators told NAN that the best way to crash the high rate in the market was the continuous injection of liquidity into the market.According to him, the appreciation of the naira is a good development for the BDC operators and other investors who require forex for their businesses.“Now that the naira is appreciating, we make more profit because if you buy at the lower rate, you sell and make gain.“When the cost of dollar is high, we make little profit; but when it is low, we make more profit because we buy more to sell.”Advertisement He, however, said that there was the challenge of accessing the forex from the commercial banks because of the stringent measures stipulated by the deposit money banks to obtain the forex.“If someone applies for forex from the banks, it takes time and the process is frustrating; sometimes, they make additional demands before they issue forex to you,” Mr. Ahmed said.Experts have, however, expressed concern about the sustainability of the measures by the apex bank.An economic expert, Uche Uwaleke, admitted that a complete currency float was capable of unifying rates and reducing round tripping and speculative activities in the market.He, however, said that such a measure could be suicidal for an import-dependent economy that derived much of its forex inflow from a single commodity.He, therefore, recommended coordinated fiscal policies designed to encourage import substitution and enhance competitiveness of local production to help reverse the downward trend in the value of naira.“Government should fast track efforts to improve the ease of doing business and the state of infrastructure in order to attract foreign investments to develop multiple streams of earning foreign exchange.“It is only when the supply of forex is guaranteed from diversified sources that the issue of market-determined value of the naira can be tabled for consideration,” Mr. Uwalake said.

Dangote Tomato Company Signs Deal with Farmers in Sokoto, Gombe

Dangote Tomato Processing Company, Kadawa, Kano state has concluded arrangement to purchase fresh tomatoes from farmers in Gombe and Sokoto States.
The company had already signed an agreement with Tomato Growers Association for the procurement of the commodity from the two stateThe Managing Director of the company, Alhaji Abdulkarim Kaita, said on Tuesday that the company found it necessary to go into the agreement following the non-availability of the commodity in Kano and other neighbouring states that produced it in large commercial quantities.He noted that the CBN anchor borrower programme had adversely affected tomato the production this irrigation season, especially in Kano State where many farmers shifted to wheat and rice production.He said, “The wheat and rice loans given to farmers this year have affected tomato production in the state.“This is the reason why the product is still costly as a big basket which was between N400 and N500 last year, is now N3, 000 in the market.Advertisement“So we cannot buy it at the present price.“When the price was between N400 and N500, we used to buy from farmers at N1, 200 per basket.”He said that the company would continue to monitor the situation until it was satisfied that the commodity was available to enable the factory resume production.“If we resume production now, the commodity will be scarce and once it is scarce, the price will go up. This is what we don’t want for now,’’ he said.On why the company did not give farmers loan to produce the commodity as it did in the past, Kaita said that out of the 100 farmers that benefited from the loan, only 20 of them were able to repay the facility.He said, “So we cannot give them another loan now since most of them have yet to repay the earlier loan they enjoyed.”He said that as soon as the commodity was available for processing, the factory would resume normal production.He said, “We are ready to resume production because all our machines are in good condition and ready for operation.”

Air Peace Issues Statement On Aborted Lagos-Abuja Flight

Air Peace has issued a statement on incident which their aircraft on Monday suffered a burst tyre while preparing for take-off at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.The management of Air Peace has provided details about the development that led its pilots to abort a flight bound for Abuja on Monday morning.In a statement by its Corporate Communications Manager, Mr. Chris Iwarah, the airline confirmed that the incident, which occured around 11am, was due to “an issue with one of the tyres of the aircraft”.It, however, said it wasn’t life-threatening and that the passengers were transferred to another plane and embarked on their journey soon afterwards.The statement read, “At about 11am today, our Lagos-Abuja flight aborted takeoff at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos when the pilot-in-command suspected that there was an issue with one of the tyres of the aircraft.Advertisement“Passengers on board were transferred to another aircraft to ensure they did not miss their appointments.“The passengers were all calm, as it was not a life-threatening incident. There was no question of air return as our very experienced flight crew noticed the development much before takeoff. Because of the premium we place on safety, our pilots are under a duty to call for checks when they suspect any fault however basic it may be. That was what happened in this case.“Although it was initially suspected to be a case of burst tyre, our Engineering Department later inspected the aircraft and confirmed that one of the tyres got deflated. The issue has since been addressed.”The airline assured its customers that their safety and comfort remained a priority and would remain so.

Yemi Osinbajo has called for an urgent task to correct many of the problems already identified by the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC).Osinbajo made the call speaking briefly with the press after paying a surprise visit to Nigeria’s major international airport in Lagos, declaring that the visit was in line with the work of PEBEC as he inspected several parts at the airport for over an hour.“As part of our work on the Ease of Doing Business, on making the environment friendly, not just for local businesses but also for those who want to come and do business in Nigeria, the airport obviously is one of the major places where we need to ensure that facilities are working and that things are being run properly,” he said.“So we have looked around, we’ve seen some of the equipment. FG Reserve Sack of 2 NCAA Directors

The Federal Government (FG) has reversed the sack letters issued to two directors at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), changing the original number of those earlier sacked, from nine to seven.The two recalled directors are Alhaji Adamu Abdullahi, Director of Consumer Protection; and Captain Ayodele Sasegbon, Director of General Aviation.The development was confirmed by the General Manager, Public Affairs at the NCAA, Mr. Sam Adurogboye saying: “The sack of the two was done in error. As it stands now, the two directors have returned to their former positions.”Machineries were setup by the affected directors to reverse their disengagements. Solar Eclipse.The Head of Media and Corporate Communications, Dr Felix Ale, in a statement on Thursday said, “A partial solar eclipse will be visible all over the country with different degree of totality to occur on Sunday, February 26.”According to Ale, the highest degree of obscurity of 33 percent will be observed in the country during the natural occurrence in the southern part of Nigeria, particularly Port Harcourt, Uyo and Calabar.He said that the lowest degree of obscurity would be about nine percent in the northern part of Nigeria, particularly in Kebbi.Ale noted that in the South-West, the level of obscurity would be 23 per cent at about 5.42 p.m. and 6.30 p.m.He, however, said it would be recording 28 to 30 per cent between 4.45 p.m. and 6.33 p.m. in the South-East.“Meanwhile, the level of obscurity in Abuja, the Federal Capital City (FCT) will be 20 per cent between 4.54 p.m. and 6.30 p.m.,” he said.He stressed that the solar eclipse would be observed across the nation, thereby making each part of the country a great site for viewing the eclipse at different degree of obscurity.According to him, the solar disc will be covered by the moon as seen from the earth and the eclipse will be visible as much as there is clear sky without rain or cloud.He, however, said there was no cause for alarm or reason to panic as the solar eclipse was a natural occurrence and should be seen as part of the beauties of nature.
