Sauce Kid: Sinzu is proof of how Nigerians view celebrities who commit crimes

Today, Sinzu is a free man. That is worth celebrating. But we have quickly forgotten the events of the last few months.

In another of those slightly shocking developments that let you know the week has actually begun, Nigerian pop sensation, Davido seems to have announced today, Monday, May 28, 2018, that he is signing veteran rapper, Sauce Kid aka Sinzu to his DMW label.

As one would expect, the news has drawn different opinions. In music circles, fans and commentators are interested to see if Sinzu can deliver on the levels that he once attained.

In the typical Nigerian manner, there have been messages highlighting why it is important to help those in need, as the tables can so easily turn (Sauce Kid put Davido on his song "Carolina" while the latter was a relative neophyte, thus the gesture has been interpreted s some benevolent iteration of Nigerian Karma). Most of the reactions have ranged from surprise to elation.

Many of Sinzu's old fans and peers have come out the woodworks to commend the rapper, offer him messages of support and basically, drum up support for what is being marketed as the second chapter in the career of a rapper who we're certain could have given so much more.

There is very little mention of the issues that have plagued Sinzu for the past year, and more particularly, his stint in a US jail.

#FreeSinzu

The last time, we heard about Sauce Kid, it was a story of stolen credit cards, surprise arrests and court arraignments.

In June 2017, Babalola Falemi, also known as Sauce Kid, was sentenced to a term of two years in jail for aggravated identity fraud.

His arrest was made public on Instagram by a friend, rapper Willy Bang, who posted a 2016 mugshot of the rapper with the caption, "#FreeSinzu Miss Ma G @chiefhunnitbands."

According to Idaho Statesman, a local publication, the rapper was charged with conspiracy to commit bank fraud, eight counts each of bank fraud and aggravated identity theft, and possession of several fraudulent bank cards.

From the moment his arrest made the news, especially to that agora of gossip that is Instablog9ja, Sinzu was vilified.

You wouldn't know from the way we have accepted internet fraudsters into regular society with open arms, but Nigerians are usually very critical of criminals.

Sinzu's crime is one that Nigerians are known for in many western countries; and many have been arrested, jailed or deported for in the past.

ALSO READ: Sauce Kid is moving on after serving his jail term

The reactions fit this context. Within the next few weeks, Sinzu was portrayed as an example; the rapper who had fallen from near-stardom into fraud.

Think pieces were written about his "fall from grace"; and his name was brought up as 'evidence' for conjectures about how Nigerian musicians are actually fraudsters when the microphone gets turned off.

Which is why, in many ways, the reactions to his arrest were somewhat confusing. Yet, they needn't have been.

Sinzu is proof that our attitude toward crime is usually determined by a lot of things that have little to do with the crime itself.

Status trumps everything... including your record

Our perception of people the law has defined as criminals is usually a function of who they were before they went to jail.

Sinzu has always been portrayed as the no-holds-barred bad boy, the Nigerian, who by way of the United States, had gathered street cred, a strong enough accent and dollars.

It is an image that, in a sense, created the context for the activities he was eventually convicted of. It is the image that he has slipped into, upon his return.

It is why, when Sinzu's deal was teased, the reactions had a tone of celebration, more than appreciation for a second chance.

ALSO READ: Three things Sinzu needs to do upon his second coming

It is a different approach to how we would have treated Kasali from around the way, who fresh from jail, has just been blessed with a job by a benevolent benefactor.

The case could be made that this is a function of what he does. Sinzu is a musician, after all, a celebrity who will always be viewed as a function of his appeal, more than his values. Yet, there are numerous examples of Nigerian celebrities who have not been able to shake the weight of their indiscretions.

What's different is Sinzu was already an elemental part of a culture that iconizes the hustler, and tweets #FREE" INSERTRAPPERNAME" when one of such is caught in the act.

We should not judge ex-convicts, or refuse them the warmth and support of being a part of society. We should also be careful not to hand people free passes because of convoluted ideals that have been passed to us in the form of hashtags.

Today, Sinzu is a free man. That is worth celebrating. But if anyone should remember the events of the last few months, it is Sinzu himself, a man who now has a second chance at showing he's not just a stereotype.

Burna Boy: Why young Nigerians want singer's Ye to replace the national anthem

In 2018, it is hard to convince the average young person to "serve with heart and might", especially when internal security crises have made it obvious that we are not exactly "one nation bound in freedom, peace and unity".

When Burna Boy set out to make Ye, and the compendium of tracks that would become his third studio album/mixtape "Outside", he must have been hoping that the fans would enjoy his offering. He couldn't possibly have imagined that they would connect to the song so well that some would go as far as suggesting that it becomes Nigeria's new national anthem.

Yet that is exactly what is happening.

While Burna's critically acclaimed project has been a bit of a slow burner in some regards, the track "Ye" has gathered a lot of attention.

So much so that fans have begun requesting for the song to be made Nigeria's new national anthem. Others have gone as far as declaring it already is.

If you're lucky enough to be in the middle of a crowd of revellers at one of Lagos' music festivals when the song comes on, you would well assume that it already is the national anthem.

It's easy to dismiss all of these as the entitled ramblings of a social media generation. But, the question is pertinent still. Why do young Nigerians want Burna Boy's Ye to become the country's national anthem?

What is the point of a national anthem?

A country's national anthem is the defacto official song of the country, a collection of lyrics in one, two or three stanzas.

The song is meant to reflect the country's status and identity, narrate its formative travails, elucidate its values, and most importantly, stir up patriotic feelings.

Nigeria's national anthem, Arise O Compatriots, was adopted in 1978. Lyrics were written by John A. Ilechukwu, Eme Etim Akpan, B. A. Ogunnaike, Sota Omoigui and P. O. Aderibigbe to the tune of music composed by the Nigerian Police Band under the directorship of B. E. Odiasse.

ALSO READ: What does patriotism mean to a Nigerian?

They may have echoed some popular sentiments 40-odd years ago, but in 2018, it is hard to convince the average young person to "serve with heart and might", especially when internal security crises have made it obvious that we are not exactly "one nation bound in freedom, peace and unity".

To be frank, the Nigerian national anthem does not reflect the Nigerian story, for young Nigerians and any other demographic for that matter.

"Plenty Plenty suffer wey we face"

Burna Boy's Ye, however, carries the spirit of a constant struggle for survival that captures how the average Nigerian goes by life on a day-to-day basis.

In particular, lyrics like "Plenty plenty plenty suffer wey we face/Just to make sure money dey" pretty much sum up what it means to be Nigerian in this day and age.

We are patriotic to our bellies, our wallets and anything that ensures we can continually be a going concern.

ALSO READ: Burna Boy says Fela is the only one who does Afrobeat

In a stroke of near perfect alignment, the next few lines of the song sample "Sorrow, Tears and Blood", a 1977 classic by the one Nigerian musician who always understood the struggles of the average person, Fela Kuti.

Burna sings, "But my people dem go say/I no wan kpai/I no wan die/I no wan peme/I wan enjoy/I wan chop life", borrowing a leaf or two from Fela to tell the story of how every Nigerian really just wants to enjoy life in spite of harsh realities.

For all the good intentions though, it's very unlikely that Burna's Ye will ever become Nigeria's national anthem.

The artist's reputation is a certain hindrance, but not as much as the fact that when you strip it to its bare bones, "Ye" is really a song about how Burna wants to enjoy life, despite the harsh criticism he faces, some of it more valid than he's willing to admit.

Still, this takes nothing away from a very salient discussion. If nothing, the requests for Burna's song to be our national anthem are proof that the Nigerian story has changed and we need to acknowledge that.

MTV Shuga IRL: 5 myths about sex, condoms and contraceptives

5 myths about sex, condoms and contraceptives

MTV Shuga stunned many on Tuesday when a documentary was aired showing the lives of the real people that inspired the recent season of the show.

MTV Shuga stunned many on Tuesday when a documentary was aired showing the lives of the real people that inspired the recent season of the show.

This people had striking similarities with the characters portrayed in the TV Series and we got to see how they deal with issues relating to transactional sex and contraception in real life.

One of the highlights of the show was getting to see many myths about sex, condoms and contraceptives get debunked.  So without further ado, let’s walk you through some of the eye-opening truths on common misconceptions about condoms and contraceptive that you may have.

Withdrawal Solves All

A growing habit among young people is to often rely on the “withdrawal method” as their form of “safe sex”. Not only is this not in any way safe, withdrawal method does not reduce the chances of getting STIs. Some research has even shown that withdrawal method may not even be enough to prevent the risk of pregnancy, so it’s best to use a condom.

Jumping After Sex = No Conception

So this is a particularly strange one. Apparently one of the issues addressed by the documentary is that some girls think if you hop repeatedly immediately after sex you may not conceive. Not only is this completely untrue, it is also downright preposterous.

The only thing that can protect you from conceiving after unprotected sex is the morning after pill/ emergency contraceptive. So ladies, please, don’t creep anybody out after sex by jumping around like a Kangaroo and NO, “pushing” like you’re about to deliver a baby doesn’t help push out the sperm either, so save your kegel skills.

Sex Education Is Awkward

Yes, nobody likes to talk about sex openly, it is a rather uncomfortable conversation, but one of the tropes that MTV Shuga subtly addresses is that if you’re old enough to have sex then you’re old enough to talk about it. Sex education is a major theme of the MTV Shuga show and also this ‘In Real Life’ documentary.

Here, the message is driven home with the subtlety that makes you see the reason why sex education is important without the message being judgmental.

Contraceptives Are Not The Worst

Many young people don’t take contraceptives. The list is almost endless for all the “supposed side effects” these are supposed to have. From being responsible for weight gain to permanently ending conception, the list goes on.

All these are false and contraceptives may actually be best for couples who are married or in committed relationships but are not ready to conceive.  The implants, IUCD or birth control pills are all options young people looking to avoid unwanted pregnancy need to consider.

A note of caution, however, contraceptives may prevent pregnancy but certainly don’t prevent STI’s, so condoms are still advised even when you’re on contraceptives.

Postinor To The Rescue

Every young adult having sex probably knows postinor. The drug and its blockbuster sequel (postinor 2) have become common off-the-counter solutions for people who have had unprotected sex. However, what a lot of people don’t know is that this drug should only be used as an emergency after unprotected sex and is not a sure-fire way to prevent unwanted pregnancy.

Using a condom or contraceptive are still the more preferred ways to avoid pregnancy. Pills like postinor should only be used in emergency situations.

So there you have it, 5 common misconceptions about sex debunked. Don’t just use these as conversation starters, take a hard look at this information and try to make wise decisions about your sex life. Remember, the goal of an HIV free generation begins with you.

Deliverance: Pastor gives desperate woman 48 strokes of cane to make her get husband

Pastor gives woman 48 strokes of cane to make her get husband

The lady, Princess Josephine Uloma reportedly broke down in tears as she recalled her ordeal in the presence of a large congregation on Sunday.

Many desperate women are going through demeaning treatments at the hands of pastors in order to get husbands. The story of a 39-year-old spinster who submitted her body for 48 strokes of flogging by her pastor just so she could get husband is one of such mind boggling instances.

The Nigerian lady, Princess Josephine Uloma reportedly broke down in tears as she recalled her ordeal in the presence of a large congregation on Sunday.

The woman from Orlu in Imo state said until she was introduced to King’s Chapel in Asaba, Delta state she had wandered about from one church to another in search of help to get a man to spend her life with.

She revealed she had been possessed by an evil “spirit of limitations, anger, and demonic measures” which drove away potential suitors from her and made her completely unattractive to men, for not less than 15 years.

Princess Josephine Uloma said that all the troubles she had to endure including the 48 strokes of cane she received in church proved fruitless until she was finally exorcised at King’s Chapel in Asaba.

In an interview with the Daily Post, the nostalgic woman said: “My life is full of testimonies, I rejected an offer of marriage from a suitor who hailed from Enugu State, and after few months, my trouble started, I was taken to several churches including one of the Pentecostal churches around Ezenei Avenue where I was flogged 48 strokes of cane by the pastor.

“And after I slept for twenty minutes, I took on the pastor, beat him up silly and forced him to eat from the sand”.

She added the situation got to a point when “my parents during the process thought I did not want to marry.

“They organized a man who came from London to marry me, and when we got there I beat him up after a minor quarrel, and I was arrested and deported to Nigeria, I later realized I was not myself when I came into Nigeria before I was introduced to King’s Chapel.”

The woman is reported to have disclosed that she has had about 120 men approach her to propose marriage, but she is looking up to God for direction as to which of them will be the best for her.

To create a PIN for completing all your 737 transactions, simply dial *737*5#, complete the authentication process to confirm that you are the account holder and create a 4 – digit PIN (known only to you).

*Why you should create a PIN*

The use of a PIN for 737 transactions further improves the security of the 737 platform. It provides the perfect balance between the convenience of completing your transactions with a single dial and the safety in knowing that even if you lose your phone, your account remains secure.

Remember that your 737 PIN is just as important as your ATM PIN or internet banking details, so you should never share it with anyone or keep it where a third party might have access to it. If you ever feel that your PIN has been compromised, repeat the Create PIN process by dialing *737*5# immediately and choose a different set of 4 digits to authenticate your 737 transactions.

The focus on African is to forge business connections, explore current music trends, and create possibilities through music as Africa has proven to be a viable market since the influx of smart mobile devices with over 50 million users in Nigeria alone.

The recent African Road show which started from Johannesburg to Lagos, Abidjan, and Brazzaville was the catalyst to open the door for conversations, ideas, and global partnerships in music business. The Lagos edition attracted journalists, music industry professionals, labels, artists, entertainment lawyers, government and diplomatic agencies, policy makers, influencers.

It was featured in over 15 national and regional media platforms and created awareness of Midem and its benefits to the African music industry.

Midem Director, Alexandre Deniot said that the focus on Africa was to strengthen the exchange between national and international music executives and businesses and increase Africa’s participation in the global music ecosystem.

The theme of the panel is ‘Africa: New Music Frontier Open for Business’. They will look into the new opportunities, ideas, and creativity coming out of Africa on a daily basis, why Africa is the new music frontier and the possibilities therein. Especially with the increase of smart devices into Africa it is becoming easier for Africans to create, commission, and consume content with the global community

Other activities not to be missed at Midem this year is the African Night showcase on 6 June 2018, the Midem Artist Accelerator with Bez representing Nigeria, and AKA, Bigstar, and T$hego representing South Africa. There will also be a Song-writing Camp for artists, and our Nigerian/Afrobeats Pavilion where we will be highlighting the benefits of the African music market, giving presentations, and conducting meetings with potential stakeholders.

Africa is the new frontier for economical growth, and entertainment has always been at the front of the spectrum. With the increased technology Africa currently enjoys, and the promise of faster and cheaper internet accessibility, independent labels and artists will be able to push their brand and artistry beyond the borders of Africa. Sooner rather than later we will begin to see new global superstars emerge from Africa.

Police Brutality: Male hair stylist locked in jail for looking like a girl

Male hair stylist locked in jail for looking like a girl

The police arrested a hair stylist who had an appointment with a client because he was perceived to be gay.

A hair stylist, Idowu Oluwatosin Olakunle, has shared a painful experience in the hands of some policemen who locked him up for looking like a girl.

Olakunle, who shared a picture of a cell had a problem with the law officers as indicated in a post displayed via his IG profile on Monday, May 28, 2018.

The policemen had interrupted his journey to Ogudu, Lagos, based on an allegation suggesting that he is a homosexual.

This ensured his arrest and a disruption of a plan to visit a client who needed a hairdo.

"THE MAN THAT ARRESTED ME... So this morning by 9am, I was on my way to style someone at Ogudu.

"I entered a public transport and was stopped by a guy at Ojota who asked me to introduced myself I asked why he said his police, they asked for my ID card I showed them.

"I was locked up from 9am - 4pm before they release me. Please since when did been slim become an offence in LAGOS.

"I was unjustly maltreated today by the POLICE and I demand justice," Idowu Oluwatosin Olakunle wrote.

Synthetic Marijuana, Black Mamba: A new deadly form of marijuana is slowly wreaking havoc in Nigeria's cities

Synthetic marijuana, also known as "Spice" or "Black Mamba" is sold in small colorful packs. Apart from the distinctive packaging, the contents look every bit like marijuana

The artificial variant of marijuana, also called "Black Mamba", has been reported to cause mental episodes, hallucinations, convulsions, kidney failure and a ‘zombie-like’ state of intoxication that can lead to death.

There’s a new drug on the streets of Lagos.

Most users prefer to smoke it, usually mixed with high-grade marijuana and rolled up in papers like tobacco and weed.

Although it can come in almost any color, the backroom chemists who make it often use dried herbs or lawn clippings to make sure it looks closely like the real stuff, so it often appears something between a deep shade of green and damp brown.

In the real sense, it looks a lot like marijuana, but it’s the farthest thing from marijuana that you’ve ever heard of.

It is widely reported that, beneath the surface of daily activity, Nigeria is on the cusp of a major drug problem.

The aggressive emergence of a culture of casual drug use has been supported by the presence of players at every major level of the drug chain.

On one hand, production is high as ever, even as makers of amphetamine have been discovered in Lagos and Rivers.

Nigeria’s status as a transit country is also not in question; since the early years of military rule, large amounts of cocaine have been funneled through the country under various guises.

And now, while the consumption of drugs like marijuana and opioids like Codeine and Tramadol has reached an alarming rate, a new, unfriendly substance is causing convulsions, kidney failure and a ‘zombie-like’ state of intoxication that can lead to death.

Synthetic marijuana, like the name suggests, is a collection of man-made chemicals that mimic the effect of marijuana and are sprayed on dried herbs or similar substances, wrapped in brightly colored packs and sold as an alternative to marijuana that is both ‘legal’ and more potent.

In the United States and the UK, it is sold under three major brand names; "Spice", "K2" and "Black Mamba", for as low as $1 per bag. This is key because it puts it in the ballpark of the most susceptible; the homeless, poor and young students.

In many ways, this affordability is a major reason why the use of the drug is spreading rapidly in areas like Lagos, Port-Harcourt, and Abuja.

But aside that, many other factors, like easy access, are contributing their quota.

Synthetic marijuana is relatively new in Nigeria, so the sale and use are not as ‘elaborate’ as it is on the other side.

It is mostly sold in head-shops here, small outfits that sell accessories used for the consumption of cannabis and tobacco, as well as items that form part of that culture, like weed-branded shirts and Bob Marley bandannas.

Outfits like this are scattered around Lagos and Victoria Islands.

There are also reports that it is sold by dealers of more expensive strains of marijuana and designer drugs in the highbrow areas of Lagos.

Synthetic marijuana is sold in small quantities for a little as 2,000 naira and as much as 10,000 naira, depending on the size of the bag and where it is bought. The substance itself is sealed tight in small, shiny bags about the size of a sugar or tea bag with the brand name written across it.

On the streets where this drug is slowly claiming victims, the tags vary; ‘Colorado’, ‘Black Mamba’, ‘Lamba’ (when mixed with Loud, a highly potent strain of marijuana), ‘Happy Boy’ or ‘Scooby Snax’.

The names are admittedly more colorful than you’d expect; what the packs contain is anything but.

Most of the clamor against synthetic weed has been made by people who have either experimented with the drug, or have seen its effects on frequent, and even first-time users. And as more people come in contact with the drug, the numbers are rising and the voices are getting louder.

On social media website, Twitter, a user @sofireginald recounted her experience with the drug in a series of tweets.

Some of her friends had ‘tried’ the drug and, despite diluting it with large amounts of tobacco, what they got was nowhere near the pleasurable high they were hoping for; according to her tweets, one of them had gone completely deaf for three days, another went so mental that she was held in medical care for three weeks… and counting.

Apparently alarmed by these experiences, she advised users to stay away from "Colorado or comorado or whatever name you people have coined for it"

One of her tweets read, “I’ve seen people cry, convulse, take off their clothes and do other weird shit. You can actually go insane. It’s not remotely healthy.”

Segun (not real name) agrees that synthetic marijuana is very dangerous; he also thinks that it is difficult to explain the true extent of its danger to people who have never tried it or seen it at work.

Segun is an avid marijuana user; he has smoked at least a blunt a day, consistently, for over three years.

One day, while driving home after work, a friend showed him a half-rolled blunt that he had gotten from another friend earlier that day; just two hits had “fucked him up”, but for some reason, he felt he was overreacting.

This friend offered the mystery blunt to Segun and another colleague who was on the ride; ever the adventurous smokers, but unwilling to take too much of a risk, they took three light ‘drags’ each. What came immediately after was an intense, harsh high, and a comedown made in hell.

I don’t know how to describe it. At first, I was feeling these strange sensations at the back of my head and my shoulders.”, Segun recounts. “My right leg, it felt almost detached. It felt like if it stayed still for long, it would feel like it was not there any more

I could only think about one particular thing at a time. My thought process was limited to handling the steering and using the brake. I had no idea where I was driving to, or where I was.

I couldn’t just remember. It was as if something crazy would happen if I tried to think of anything else. All I could do was drive and say guy (when my friends talked to me)", he said. “I had to increase the volume of the music to avoid falling into this place that the drug was taking me to

When I got home, I ate and bragged a lot about the high, then I blacked out. I don’t remember these things happening. I can only tell you because I was told”, Segun adds.

He is one of the lucky people. There have been reports of people having worse highs while on synthetic weed, sometimes inflicting self harm. In one case, a user jumped off a ledge, broke his leg and carried on, completely oblivious to what had happened and the broken leg he was trying to stand on.

For all the novelty of these accounts, you will be mistaken to assume that they are isolated events.

In recent weeks, various people have reported seeing the distinctive colorful packs of ‘Spice’ in different places, from the Afrika Shrine in Ikeja, to Vantage, a hotel, and lounge, in Lekki.

In the 1990s, John W. Huffman, a chemist from South Carolina in the United States, began researching artificial ways to replicate cannabinoids, the active chemicals that cause the behavioral and psychoactive changes that we interpret as being ‘high’.

Marijuana was a banned Schedule 1 substance in the United States at the time, and Huffman needed to replicate these chemicals for his research on the health effects of marijuana while avoiding the implications of experimenting with a banned substance.

He found some success years after; one of the compounds he developed replicated the desired effects and was shown to help reduce skin cancer and brain tumors in lab mice.

Huffman published his findings in the mid-2000s, complete with instructions on how to re-create the chemical compound he had developed that he said could be followed by a “halfway decent undergraduate chemistry major in three steps” using materials that can be purchased by just about anyone.

Needless to say, there were more than enough capable chemistry graduates at the time. In the years that followed, manufacturers created it in large quantities and began to sell it in head shops, packaged as air fresheners, aromatic leaves or potpourri.

Most experts agree that Spice was first sold as a recreational drug in the UK in 2004.

Huffman’s original compound was the product of years of rigorous research and had been fine-tuned to achieve as little harm as possible, but even at that, it was extremely dangerous.

In time, cities around the US became aware of the health and social risks that it posed. Between 2014 and 2015, New York and other states banned the substance out-rightly.

The manufacturers responded in the most unexpected way.

The original anti-spice laws only recognized the class of compounds close to Huffman’s original template; so the manufacturers set about using it to create their own chemical compounds that could replicate marijuana and evade the laws.

As new laws are created in Europe and the United States to tackle the production of spice, the manufacturers have become more experimental, pushing the boundaries and creating new chemicals that they do not totally understand.

It is why, regardless of the ‘ingredients’ listed on the packaging, no-one ever really knows what is in a spice blunt. Not even the manufacturers themselves.

What they have managed to create is a concoction of random chemicals that can take a user to the fringes of insanity and, as in a case where 33 New Yorkers were rushed to the hospital in July 2016, turn them into living, breathing ‘zombies’.

It then begs the question: What makes a person want to be so high that they use a drug that rids them of control of the mind and body?

Few regular users of synthetic marijuana hardly ever find the words to recount their experience in useful detail; but among those who have ‘tried’ the drug, a number have lived to tell the tale.

They describe the feeling of being high on synthetic weed as something entirely different from regular, natural marijuana.

While regular cannabis gives a feeling of light euphoria, drowsiness, increased sensory awareness (and paranoia among new users), this synthetic high is something between extreme paranoia and a deep, aggressively overwhelming trance.

Users begin to act erratically almost immediately after smoking. Even where two individuals use the same batch, their reactions can be completely different.

Some users are so bemused that they break into spontaneous, intense laughter, others become severely anxious and paranoid that they literally withdraw into themselves and become hostile at any attempt to make contact or have a conversation.

Either way, they enter a world of their own, one where the norms and behavior of sobriety are inaccessible, to put it lightly.

In many ways, it is the case with all forms of recreational drug use and it's eventual, usually unavoidable abuse. Most drug users do so for the euphoria, mental liberty and the feeling of detachment that can come with being high.

In this sense, it is a journey between two extremes; release, euphoria, and weightlessness on one hand and the reality of daily life and its momentary worries on the other.

Users of synthetic marijuana are simply more willing, usually by reason of circumstance or sheer misdirected curiosity, to explore the former extreme to its farthest ends; what they find is usually a chaotic inverse that one can hardly emerge from without any harm.

The compounds that make up synthetic marijuana were never meant to be inside the human body. When they are, the damage they cause is immense.

Some of the short term effects on the mind include but aren’t limited to; unresponsiveness, loss of consciousness, confusion, altered time sense, extreme anxiety, panic attacks, severe paranoia, delusions, hallucinations, psychosis and potential suicide”, says Victor Ugo, a medical doctor who is the founder of Mentally Aware Initiative, a mental health advocacy program based in Lagos, Nigeria.

In cities like New York and London where spice is already a major problem, there are entire groups of the homeless, poor, delinquent and wanderers who use the drug in groups during smoking sessions in not-so-secluded places.

Locals call them “zombies”.

The name comes from the ‘zombie-like’ state they enter after using the drug, where they seem to lose all capacity to understand, process information and make decisions.

In extreme cases, ‘zombies’ can black out and become almost motionless, falling over whatever is in sight when the high takes effect.

It can take days or weeks for a user to feel completely rid of the feeling. When they regain consciousness, there is usually no memory of these events.

With some medical help and abstinence, recovery can happen at a much quicker pace but, even in the case of a first time user, the drug usually causes permanent damage to brain cells and long-term behavioral changes.

It is not that easy to escape the effects of synthetic marijuana on the body’s anatomy.

According to Ugo, “from medical analyses, it has been found that the active ingredients are dangerous and toxic”.

The drug has severe short and long term effects of the human body, with no limit to which vital organ it affects.”, he adds.

Short term use can cause “nausea and vomiting, heavy sweating, uncontrolled/spastic body movements, acute kidney injury, rapid heart rate, high blood pressure and reduced blood supply to the heart”.

Long-term users face health risks that are far worse and can be, in extreme cases, terminal. “Unlike the non-synthetic Marijuana which isn’t known to be addictive, synthetic Marijuana can be addictive”, Ugo says.

It can lead to withdrawal symptoms which include craving, nightmares, heavy sweating, nausea, tremors, headaches, extreme tiredness, insomnia, diarrhea, vomiting, problems thinking clearly and neglect of other interests or duties.

“After repeated use of the drug, users can experience forgetfulness and confusion. We’ve at times heard of and read about users/addicts experiencing paralysis”, he continues.

Beyond these health concerns, there is also the social implication of dealing with such an addictive drug that is mostly used by the youth and individuals on the fringes of society.

Factors like these have pushed governments in countries most hit by synthetic marijuana to educate the population, enact legislation and provide intensive rehabilitation in a bid to defeat what is fast becoming an epidemic.

The reverse is the case in Nigeria. Despite reports of overdoses, insanity and organ failure caused by synthetic marijuana in recent months, Nigeria’s drug agencies are yet to even show any signs that they are even aware of the drug’s existence.

For now, the full extent of their focus is on often-celebrated cannabis busts that end with press releases and high-definition pictures.

(Efforts to reach the Lagos State Command of the Nigerian Police Force were not responded to)

As they tackle a rapidly emerging epidemic, countries in the West have considered and explored many routes to get synthetic marijuana off their streets.

In the UK, stringent laws have been enacted to discourage the production, sale, and use of synthetic marijuana.

The United States’ approach to solving this problem has involved similar stringent laws, but also a trend where states have legalized medical and recreational marijuana at various levels. While some believe this approach is as liberal as it gets, there are others who feel it is not liberal enough.

In the alternative, certain individuals and pro-Spice groups have called for a more liberal approach to synthetic marijuana around the world.

They claim that the original compound that Huffman developed was the product of years of scientific research, and much safer than what is sold today.

What they advocate is that the government sponsors research into synthetic marijuana with a view to developing compounds that are safer to consume.

Regardless of the many differing opinions, one thing is certain, that more people need to be educated on the perils of using and selling synthetic marijuana.

Unlike regular marijuana, synthetic marijuana is hardly stored in bulk or sold in dark dens under the bridge, so law enforcement agents must drop their usual model of random raids for an approach that relies more on community policing and coordinated investigations.

Anti-Spice laws must also be created, with heavy sanctions for those who violate its provisions.

In all fairness, the spread of synthetic marijuana has come faster than was first feared, but the dangers that it poses demand that efforts against it move even quicker.

Today, it’s just a drug that has put a number of people in the hospital, but there's nothing to stop it from becoming a full blown epidemic.

Man bent on suicide ignores the plea of Omega Power Ministry's G.O

A man with an intention to commit suicide suffered an electrocution while a crowd appealed to him to get off an electric pole.

In Port Harcourt, Rivers State, a man who seemed bent on committing suicide paid no attention to a crowd who called for him to get down from an electric pole.

This was revealed in a footage which captured a late evening in Port Harcourt.

A Facebook profile, Efcc Chiko confirmed that the incident occurred on Sunday, May 27, 2018.

The sum of N1 million failed to appeal to the suicidal man according to Chiko's post shared on the day of the event.

"Happening Now at Jevinik PH. This Young man wanted to commit suicide and climbed a high tension wire.

"He was beg with 1million naira to climb down..the boy refused and went high before he was finally electrocuted and fell from the pole," Efcc Chiko expressed on his page.

Orphanage rejects donation from lawmaker, turns her away

Purity Ngirici who represents the East African country’s Kirinyaga county as lawmaker reportedly went to the Kianyaga Children’s Home on Sunday, May 27 to donate 180 pairs of shoes, 180 mattresses and other gifts for use by the orphans.

A female member of Kenya’s parliament was turned away with items she had gone to donate to an orphanage because the facility said she failed to follow laid down procedure for donating to the orphanage.

Purity Ngirici who represents the East African country’s Kirinyaga county as lawmaker reportedly went to the Kianyaga Children’s Home on Sunday, May 27 to donate 180 pairs of shoes, 180 mattresses and other gifts for use by the orphans.

However, security guards at the Children’s Home locked her out upon instruction from management of the facility.

Attempting to explain the incident, management of the Kianyaga Children’s Home is quoted as saying: "We have a policy as a department or county government. Anything that has to be donated to this home must follow the right channel and protocol.

"The security of the children is of paramount importance we cannot just allow anybody to come from the blues into the children’s home.”

However, the explanation did not convincePurity Ngirici. She suspected that the whole development was orchestrated by Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru who she had reportedly had some issues with, to embarrass her.

She said: "Such acts are primitive, unfortunate, reprehensible, and outlandish and can only be construed to be instigated by malice. My office will not be intimidated by people who don't believe we are all brothers and sisters where social responsibility remains a collective effort."

Under normal circumstances, especially in Ghana where orphanages are resource starved and are in dire need of support they would actually be the ones going after notable people to donate to them, but the reverse was the case in Kenya.

Udechkwu later suggested starting a transport service business, suggesting to the Dubai-based businessman to buy two Sienna buses to start off with.

The reports revealed that the complainant agreed to the terms as if under a  spell. After the business failed to kick off as expected, the victim asked Udechukwu to sell off the buses.

Udechukwu reportedly sold one of the buses and converted the proceeds to his personal use.

Months later, the pastor once again suggested another business to the complainant whose identity has been withheld, introducing him to one Amechi Chuks Amechi who claimed to work with Nigeria Breweries.

Amechi was reportedly meant to assist in securing a dealership from the company.

Amechi claimed that the deal would cost the complainant N2.37m, which he transferred to Amechi’s company account.

On the complainants return to the country, he was shocked to realise that nothing was done with the money as he had hoped to start up their businesses in Nigeria.

Further investigation into the case revealed that Udechukwu had used the monies for these businesses to expand his church buildings and the rest converted to his personal use.
