Independence Day: Here is why October 1 means nothing to Nigerian millennials

Independence Day means nothing to Nigerian millennials

Kunle Afolayan's movie, 'October One' probably means more to Nigerian millennials than Independence Day.

It’s October 1, 2017, I had just lost my father. I woke up feeling deflated while I tried to keep everything in order. After we got into the groove of the day, only my Mum remembered what day it was.

If 2017 was a different year, let’s throw it back to 2016 when I only remembered what the day was because I was an NYSC member.

Like a few friends of mine, we never watched the television or ranted about how bad Nigeria is on social media, neither did we talk about the broken dream of the founding fathers. We instead went to Ibueno Beach in Akwa Ibom State and balled out.

Nigerian millennials don’t just care about Nigeria as much is the problem. It’s why a 25-year old Nigerian somewhere, seldom votes, nor is he upbeat to get his/her Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) for the upcoming elections.

The founding fathers laid the foundation for a terrible Nigeria

Nigeria is a fundamentally flawed country with selfish people at the helm of Power, navigating things problematically.

The 1966 Coups which Nigeria still pays hefty fees for in 2018. It’s a terrible turn of events, but one we cannot avoid.

The first republic led by Prime Minister, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and President Nnamdi Azikiwe was littered with continued corruption and embezzlement in the upper echelons of Nigerian power.

Obafemi Awolowo was also found guilty of the financial misappropriation of the Western Region Marketing Board. There was also the issue of personality clashes between Chiefs Obafemi Awolowo and Ladoke Akintola.

The timing was also off as military coups in Dahomey, Algeria, Egypt, and other countries must have filled conspirators with confidence.

Nigeria has never really been good, we were just rich at one point in the 70s when we joined OPEC. Even that national wealth was ruined by terrible embezzlement by entitled thieves.

This culture that started around FESTAC 1977 which created an era of entitlement to national wealth, has permeated through our entire culture.

This sad reality has made Nigeria a joke of an existence and that's the major reason why most people are not passionate about Nigeria — definitely not millennials.

ALSO READ: 58 Years Later, Has Nigeria Worked?

No, it is not because they didn’t live in the 60s

Not living at a time when a dream was forged doesn’t mean you can’t believe in it. A lot of African-Americans never experienced the brute evil of slave trade and slavery, but they still fly the flag.

It is why the average African-American is loathed to seeing a non-black person call a black man, ‘nigga’, there is a fight worth die for and a legacy worth protecting. Nigeria has no equivalent.

How do you expect me to believe in and celebrate something that will only serve me a plate of heartbreak just moments after I celebrate it?

The lack of appreciation has also become ingrained and subconscious from years of suffering and failure since birth. It gets to a level where you just can’t care anymore.

As a child, even if you felt some emotion for your country during Children’s Day, the very last vestiges of that were stripped away when you wrote your Senior School Certificate Examinations in Nigeria.

It’s not because we are selfish

As noted earlier, you can only sacrifice yourself to a system that is destined to favour you, long and short term.

The Nigerian fabric is more fraudulent than Yahoo Boys and more problematic than our changing tides of corruption. Selfishness means abandoning the right way to hug the wrong one.

Selfishness also means a lack of sacrifice when nothing is forthcoming for you. If you sacrifice yourself to Nigeria enough, you will be broke and die jittery.

Lots of public servants like the man who designed our flag, Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi live in, and Rashidi Yekini died in terrible circumstances, despite their sparkling record and legacy for Nigeria.

Having a legacy in Nigeria is not enough. Your children will not eat and inherit the legacy. The only relevant people from generations are mostly sons and daughters of corrupt individuals and embezzlers.

Despite that knowledge, when the money has been cleaned by escrow accounts, tax havens, and shell companies, their children start companies with these funds or invest in multinationals.

I have to work in a country that does not want me to work, yet calls me selfish and lazy.

It is not just about leaving a legacy of wealth. It is about not repeating the mistakes our parents made. In fact, dying for Nigeria is not an option, because the ball he might be political.

Do you expect me to repeat the mistakes my parents made? I refuse to. Common sense precludes me from such nonsensical sentiment. I refuse to slave like my father.

Millennials are not selfish, or unpatriotic. We are just reasonable to not sow into a system that drains you of everything and leaves you with nothing.

Our subconscious has been trained to not celebrate anything not worth celebrating and Nigeria at 58 is definitely not worth it. It’s worse when we consider the affairs in Ghana and South Africa.

ALSO READ: Report says 74% of Nigerians would live in another country if they had the opportunity

We would rather go fulfill that Nigeria dream and sow that seed in western colonies where our gifts are better appreciated in systems that aim to pay us our worth.

We aim to commit to systems that have been proven to actually work, not one that only aims to robs you of every altruism you have in you.

Some parents in Osun and Ekiti States have not been paid salaries in months. Osun State civil servants have not been paid in over 20 months.

Some retired parents have also not been paid their gratuity and retirement benefits after five years of submitting that letter. Neither are they being paid a dime of pension after 35 years of worthy service.

How do you want me to love that system? I cannot. I will not. The world has enough problems, I need liberation, not enslavement.

The role of our parents

Every Fourth of July in America, it is an ingrained culture that American homes celebrate and wine and toast to the founding fathers and a bright future.

That is a symbol of hope, where greatness seems achievable and life seems positive, despite having Donald Trump as President.

Even in America, a July 2, 2015 article by Larissa Faw for Media Post said, "Independence Day is a traditionally a time for barbeques and fireworks, but for millennials, July 4th also includes booze." Some will attribute it to the non-conformist millennial tendency that doesn't respect history, but it's not that simple.

We respect things that seem palpably commendable.

It operates on the understanding that America is more than Trump and it is true.

Our parents never created a culture like that and who can blame them? Nigeria has a systemic problem that has festered over the generations.

Our parents could not celebrate Nigeria because there was nothing worth celebrating. As such, we bought into that truth and we became more stoic as we saw Nigeria worsen.

Our parents only ignored Independence Day abi? We even hiss at independence day, because it that nonsensical a remembrance of the terrible state of affairs in Nigeria.

Nigeria is a bad joke. Independence day certainly only serves as a painful reminder of how our cousins who grew up in America or England have better lives.

It also reminds us of how much we cannot wait to get that visa, move away and never come back. That is the Nigerian dream we know.

A dream is meant to give you positive visions. Nigeria gives terrible nightmares. Thus, we have to create our own dream. Nigeria makes it hard to dream.

As millennials, we grew up more enlightened and we are the first widely outspoken generation. We don’t slave — actually and psychologically where it is not worth it.

We have greater issues to deal with

Not too young to run? Despite the supposed executive Assent to the Law, it seems a pipe dream that a young person will rule a state, let alone a nation.

We have an ingrained problem. What do you want me to do when the employment rates are falling every year? What do you want me to do when even if you find a job, it barely pays bills?

What do you want us to do when we can’t breathe and enjoy the morning? What do you want me to do when government Universities are a joke, making people lose confidence in themselves?

What do you want me to do when I have to deal with bullying and social media trolls? What do you want me to do when drinking beer does not solve my problems?

ALSO READ: Here is how Yahoo Boys dress?

What do you want me to do when I have siblings I want the good life for, but cannot afford it? What do you want me to do when I have mental health issues to deal with?

What do you want me to do when I see my friends fade into the darkness under the influence of drugs to numb the pain? What do you want me to do when my friend committed suicide because he was gay?

What do you want me to do when I see my Northern brothers get constantly murdered by the politics called sectarian terrorism?

What do I do when my country cannot avail me any solution to these problems and only makes it worse? What do I do when living in Lagos means risking my mental health daily?

What do I do when Akure cannot offer me the life that I need? What do I do when even the music annoys me?

What do I do when my fellow youths are so frustrated, they can’t have a simple conversation without lacking context? What do I do when SARS only stopped harassing me for owning a Laptop in August 2018?

What do I do when the fire of inspiration has to be lit by myself every day — even days that I feel like sleeping?

Celebrate Independence Day? I’d rather not.

I don’t celebrate Nigeria because there’s nothing to celebrate. I’d rather be at work, doing a job that God gave me or watch a movie.

There’s nothing to discuss.

NAFDAC: Keep off rotten tomatoes to avoid cancer, agency warns Nigerians

Mrs Christiana Essenwa, a Deputy Director with the agency, gave the warning in an interview with tNews Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Onitsha.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Friday warned Nigerians against the consumption of rotten tomatoes to forestall cancer.

Mrs Christiana Essenwa, a Deputy Director with the agency, gave the warning in an interview with tNews Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Onitsha.

According to her, rotten tomatoes contain micro organisms that induce cancer.

She explained that “once tomatoes become rotten, it will have micro organisms, mostly fungi, and fungi in rotten tomatoes produce mycotoxins which are deadly and induce cancer, and cause immune deficiency in man and animals.

“Mycotoxins are deadly, and can cause all sorts of poisoning in the body,” the director said.

She said that some research suggested that mycotoxins could also cause kidney damage.

According to her, some people think that rotten tomatoes which are cheap, can be consumed after washing and heating.

She, however, stressed that the toxins could not be washed or killed by heating “because mycotoxins are heat-resistant.”

She, therefore, advised consumers to keep-off rotten tomatoes often sold cheap in the market, saying “it was better to spend money to prolong life than to use such money to buy death.”

Ivan Rakitic's off day sums up draw vs. Athletic as Barcelona drop more points

BARCELONA -- Lionel Messi came off the bench to help Barcelona avoid defeat against Athletic Bilbao, setting up a late equaliser for fellow substitute Munir El Haddadi to secure a 1-1 draw. Athletic took a first-half lead through Oscar De Marcos and looked set to hold on to the three points as Messi and Philippe Coutinho were denied by the woodwork. However, Barca snatched a point in the 84th minute when Messi teed up Munir after his initial shot had been saved by Unai Simon. Positives Barca...

Maternal Instinct: Don’t allow another woman breastfeed your baby, expert advises mothers

A breastfeeding mother (Illustrative)

Rev. Sr. Eunice Okobia of Medical Missionaries of Mary Clinic, ACO Housing Estate, Abuja, gave the advice on Saturday while addressing mothers during an immunisation programme.

Nursing mothers are advised to avoid giving their babies to relatives or friends to breastfeed them whenever they are not around or sick, a medical expert has said.

Rev. Sr. Eunice Okobia of Medical Missionaries of Mary Clinic, ACO Housing Estate, Abuja, gave the advice on Saturday while addressing mothers during an immunisation programme.

Okobia said that nursing mothers who allowed other women to breastfeed their babies put such children at the risk of being infected.

She said it was safer to use a bottle of the mother’s breast milk or infant formula to feed babies whose mothers were not available to feed them.

“Contact with breast milk and breast tissue can transmit infections, such as yeast, bacteria or viruses.

“ Before now, mothers will allow their friends or relatives to breastfeed their babies when they are away or sick.

“We all know that HIV can be transmitted through breast milk. Also disease, such as hepatitis, can also be gotten through cracked nipples.

“ Unless you know the complete medical history of the friend or relative, it would be risky to let another woman breastfeed your baby,’’ Okobia said.

She advised: “if you feel that a relative or friend should breastfeed your baby, you should consult your paediatrician.’’

Spiritual Scammer: 19-year-old man strips 60-year-old woman for cleansing

2 death row inmates among 219 that escaped Minna prison

Emmanuel made the confession during his trial at the Ejigbo Magistrates court, where he said he scammed and stripped his 60-year-old victim.

19-year-old Saheed Emmanuel has confessed to stripping a 60-year-old woman during an alleged spiritual cleansing.

According to a report by Punch, Emmanuel made the confession during his trial at the Ejigbo Magistrates court.

The 19-year-old admitted the charges against him and pleaded guilty.

He was, however, handed 2 years imprisonment without an option of fine for scamming the 60-year old woman by Presiding Magistrate, L.K.J. Layeni.

How Emmanuel stripped and scammed 60-year-old woman

Emmanuel had scammed and stripped the old woman naked under the false pretense of delivering from evil spirits.

Emmanuel, who met the victim in Ikotun area of Lagos state, claimed to be a spiritualist that can cure any form of ailment and affliction.

The victim told Emmanuel about her ailment, hence, opening her up for the 19-year-old to fleece her of the sum of N120,000.

Emmanuel had confessed to taking te victim to a river at the Badagry area of Lagos where, he asked her strip herself before commencing the spiritual cleansing.

The 'spiritual cleansing'

While the victim was naked, the 19-year-old allegedly fondled with her body parts that included her genitals during the 'spiritual cleansing.'

Despite the 'spiritual cleansing' the victim's health condition worsened and she knew she was scammed after which she informed her children who reported to the police station where Emmanuel was arrested and charged to court.

Flop of the Week: 81-year old Bill Cosby gets 3 to 10 years prison sentence

Bill Cosby sentenced to 3 to 10 years in prison

The disgraced veteran actor, who is known for 'The Cosby Show' has been called a 'Predator' by Amber Rose

You might know Bill Cosby. He is the 50-year Hollywood veteran known for shows like The Bill Cosby Show, The Cosby Show and Fat Albert and The Cosby Kids.

He is also a former stand-up comedian who was sentenced to three-ten years in prison on September 25, 2015 by Judge O'Neill who also refused him bail.

On his conviction, Judge O’Neill said, “This is a serious crime he was convicted for. This is a sexual assault crime,” the judge said.

Continuing, he said, “No one is above the law, and no one should be treated differently or disproportionally.

“Cosby would be sentenced regardless of “who he is or who he was.

“I have given great weight to the victim impact testimony in this case, and it was powerful,” O’Neill noted.

In April 2018, he was found guilty of three counts of aggravated indecent assault for drugging and sexually assaulting Temple University Administrator, Andrea Constand in 2004.

Cosby started unraveling around the mid-2000s when his rap sheet of sexual assault allegations made rounds — some dating back decades and decades.

Over 60 women accused him of rape, drug-facilitated sexual assault, sexual battery, child abuse, and sexual misconduct.

ALSO READ: How to deal with creeps on social media and dating websites

What would make a man this infamously prolific?

Although the Statute of Limitation had limited the actionability of a lot of these cases, it still created a narrative and established a pattern of Cosby’s history and habit of sexual impropriety.

Granted, we live in a phoney world where some of those allegations might not be true and the sex might have been consensual, but even 10 accusations is a lot, because that establishes a predatory pattern.

It is not okay. Only a man who feels terribly indestructible will do this, and it just goes to show how women were thought of as so inconsequential that a man would serially abuse some of them with so much vigour.

This modern world is no place for predators and whoever you are, you’re going to get this strap which you had coming.

Bill Cosby is a man who abused his privilege and standing. He’s the atypical man in a high place, doing terrible things with his privilege because of his access and reach.

It is not beyond thought that Cosby might have used his influence to kill some of these cases against him as rape and sexual assault have always been offences. Some of these women might have wanted to speak up earlier than they did.

Even though he was known for jokes, he has now become the joke as he has been for a number of years, unknown to us.

Bill Cosby is a sexual Predator and we don’t need any court conviction to know that. There is an established pattern. Even accusations from 5 women is a pattern, let alone 60.

NO, HE WAS CONVICTED BECAUSE HE'S A DISTURBED PREDATOR, NOT BECAUSE HE IS BLACK.

The man is rightly a “Predator” as Amber Rose called him.

Bill Cosby, take this L.

Godiamo: Here are 5 things to know about the late social media personality

Godiamo commits suicide

The late Gotran Diamo was amongst other things was an entrepreneur who loved life

On September 26, 2018, viral social media personality, Godiamo committed suicide after jumping off the 10th floor of the Brickell City Building, Miami, Florida.

Before he committed suicide, he dropped a suicide note directed at his parents and loved ones before engaging in the tragic act.

While he was popular on Instagram and Snapchat, not much was known about the man born, Gotran Diamo.

His social media pages speak loud without saying much, but here is what Pulse has been able to gather;

1.) He liked traveling and his family

In one of his posts, he posted ‘travel and work’ as his cardinals. While he didn’t post family, it was clear that he was very family oriented as pictures of his mother are plastered over social media.

Asides that, he never misses a moment to share the spotlight with his loved ones, even his partner whom he claims has been there for years and years.

2. He was a cryptocurrency enthusiast

On his Instagram page @godiamo, he can be seen vaunting his crypto links and what they mean.

In a post, he even calls someone a fellow crypto brother.

3.) He’s an Angola native

Diamo is a native of Angola or a Frenchman of Angolan heritage. In a post, he calls Luanda his “Second home.”

His name, Gotran does sound very French and so does his surname, which seems very Francophone country-esque, but isn’t.

Nonetheless, what we do know is that his life made some sense. And Luanda was definitely a part of that.

ALSO READ: Lagos is messing with my mental health

4.) He was a PSG and Davido fan

Asides loving the team, he loves his hometown of Paris and never misses a chance to shout and celebrate where he’s from.

In a 2017 post, he hosted Nigerian superstar, Davido who was billed to perform in Paris. Before then, he had always shown Davido love and even gets all the hashtags right.

On several IG posts, he thoroughly exhibited his love for Paris Saint Germain and everything the club stands for. He even owned scarves and regularly attended matches.

5.) He owned JED Business with his friends

One thing we do know though is that he met a lot of celebrities like Neymar Ronaldinho, Davido, Ronaldo De Lima, Didier Drogba and so forth.

Asides that, he’s appeared as delegate and participant at major events and attended the Cannes Film Festival 2017, where he walked the red carpet.

He owned this company with his friends like Patrick Zilli and Alx The Future.

We, however, know that he traveled a lot, and attended different events. He must be an entrepreneur of some kind, working it hard.

6.) He loved Nigeria

In March 2016, he came to Lagos, Nigeria.

By the looks of it, it seems he came for his JED Business.

It seems he also enjoyed every minute of it.

Transfer Talk: Malcom now unwanted at Barcelona after snubbing Roma

Barcelona's Ernesto Valverde says it's imperative for Barcelona to bounce back from ltheir defeat to Leganes, comparing the reaction to each time Barca lose to an earthquake striking. The transfer window for all of Europe's big five leagues is closed, but that doesn't stop Transfer Talk from rummaging around about who will be moving where come January. Malcom already an outsider at Barca In a cautionary tale regarding rash last-minute decisions, it seems that Malcom is already out of favour -- or perhaps never was in favour to begin with -- at the Camp Nou. MTN Nigeria: 5 things you totally missed at mpulse planet

5 Things You Totally Missed at MTN Nigeria’s mPulse Planet

MTN Nigeria was not joking when they tagged their latest ‘first-of-its-kind’ web-app, Learn and Shine.

It has been a month since the ‘funnest’ event Nigeria has ever seen and we need to relive that day all over again!

What day was that cool? It was the mPulse Launch event and we were living our best lives.

See ehn, MTN Nigeria was not joking when they tagged their latest ‘first-of-its-kind’ web-app, Learn and Shine. It was day of fun and immense amounts of food! So here are the things you missed.

1.The Fun Was Ghen Ghen

No one can have fun like kids, and the young ones at the mPulse planet came ready to have fun to the fullest. School’s out and mPulse put everything they loved in one hall.

2. The Food was Great

We love the fact that it wasn’t the usual rice they had. There were cupcakes, pizza, sandwiches, etcc,  and still loads of drinks for the kids to enjoy. And enjoy, they did!

3. Games Extravaganza

The question should be, what kind of games weren’t available. Kids could play life size ludo, live game shows (which had them squealing in joy), video games, etc. The mPulse game zone was everything the kids wanted and even more.

4. They got to see their fave celebs

Chidinma, Maria Okan and other stars were around to ‘ginga’ the kids, and the kids loved every minute of it. We were excited for them too.

5. They got to experience mPulse

Parents and their young ones were excited about the new web-app, that much was obvious. We got to see what the app could do and what we could do with it. So now, the young uns have a place to have fun, learn, be creative all at the touch of a button. A little girl who had gotten her fill in cake was painting  #344 (the code of the webapp) in her plat of ice cream cake.

6. Free Wifi

Even for adults, free wifi is everything, and the kids wasted no time in enjoying the benefits of the readily available internet connection. And the best part was that parents could sigh in peace since the wifi was restricted to only kid-friendly content.

We could go on and on about the awesomeness that was wrapped up in that one day, but we have to stop here and not mention the stunning performances from the kids, or the hilarious dancing or the seriously wicked kicks that they were sporting. So we shall stop, lol!

Taking good precaution before requesting for a taxi can be a saving grace in case you run into a potential kidnapper posing to be a cabbie.

It is important to make plans for your safety when travelling in a taxi.

It offers an option of ease and comfort when compared to a ‘danfo’ but the experiences of some passengers in the hands of cabbies especially in Lagos have indicated that moving around in taxis can be classy but dangerous.

Consider these when hailing your next cab.

1. Don’t board a taxi if driver shows up in wrong vehicle: It was a little over 1am in April when I ordered a cab. On the app it showed that I should expect to be picked up by a driver who rides in a 2007 Honda Accord car.

Unfortunately, he showed up in a different vehicle. After questioning him, I identified him as a threat and called another taxi. He tried to explain to me why he showed up in a different ride but it didn’t make sense. Similar experiences  have been captured on Twitter.

2. Watch out for taxis that don’t look like one: Maybe all cabbies should hang a signage on the roof of their vehicles to help with screening dangerous drivers.

In Port Harcourt, a lady risked her life to escape from suspected kidnappers. She decided to jump out of a speeding car when it had dawned on her that she has entered a one-chance vehicle.

She observed that the taxi didn’t really have an appearance suggesting that it is used for commercial purposes. She had ignored the signs.

3. It is safer not to ride alone: The cab-hailing market has seen competitiveness that has captured the economic class of people living in Nigeria. Some platforms offer an opportunity to share a ride with other riders. That’s not a bad thing to explore in your quest for safety.

As the WorldRemit’s Future Stars coaching programme in partnership with Arsenal FC edges towards the final stage, six shortlisted coaches from around the African continent now stand only a step away from the opportunity of a lifetime to impact on their community doing what they love.

In line with the ethos of WorldRemit, promoting the giving back to native communities by operating an international online money transfer platform, the Future Stars programme aims to help football coaches give back to their community by giving them the opportunity to learn from the Arsenal FC soccer school coaches in an all-expense paid trip to the United Kingdom.

Beginning with a callout that attracted over 700 applicants from countries all over Africa, only six coaches have emerged as finalists vetted on their contributions so far to their community and their future plans to do even more. The shortlisted coaches have now been recorded for the public’s viewing and will be displayed on futurestars.worldremit.com (from September 28, 2018) where viewers are welcome to vote their favourite coach support their dream of becoming the Future Stars programme winner for the year.

The finalists facing the public vote are:

Adegun Shola John from Lagos, Nigeria

Ahmed Ali from Hargeisa, Somaliland

Hamisi Mohamed from Nairobi, Kenya

Innocents Yeboah-Num from Abease, Ghana

Tersia Davids from Cape Town, South Africa

Titus Tongesai Sanangurai from Harare, Zimbabwe

These six coaches were chosen by a panel of judges from a shortlist of 25 individuals after careful evaluation of their value proposition to their communities. One in six of the shortlisted 25 coaches were women, with Tersia Davids from South Africa emerging in the finals to face the public vote. It is hoped that her triumph in getting this far serves to motivate and inspire others to take part in the game of football.

The judging panel to determine the six finalists of Future Stars consisted of Simon McManus, Head Coach at Arsenal Soccer Schools; Marc Thorogood, Business Manager of Arsenal Soccer Schools; Ismail Ahmed, Founder and CEO of WorldRemit; Catherine Wines, Co-Founder of WorldRemit and Hammad Mian, Head of Customer Insight and Strategy for WorldRemit.

The Future Star programme is designed to recognise and reward the valuable contribution of youth coaches to their local community and has already granted Arsenal replica shirts to over 500 kids whose coaches were shortlisted for the programme by the judging panel.

Simon McManus of Arsenal Soccer Schools said:

“Arsenal has the most successful women’s side in England and is actively involved in encouraging greater participation from females in the game regardless of age. We were very impressed by the work that all these coaches were already doing in their community and the work of the women coaches further emphasizes the positive impact that encouraging more women to get involved in coaching can have. We hope that their success will encourage more women to follow their lead.”

Andrew Stewart, Managing Director Middle East & Africa at WorldRemit said:

“Our business is all about helping our customers’ financial support for their community to go further. We hope that by shining a spotlight on the way these coaches are using football to benefit their community, we can help their efforts to go even further still. The power of sport to bring communities together and create positive social change was one of the key reasons for entering into a partnership with Arsenal. This programme has highlighted just how powerful sport – and our partnership - can be and the immense potential in this area. This is something we are now looking to build on further.

Below, A Short Profile Of The Shortlisted Coaches.

Adegun Shola John from Lagos, Nigeria

Combining his love of football and teaching, Adegun has been a community coach for girls and boys for three years. He is motivated to lead fun training sessions, helping young people unlock their passion for football, avoid social vices and appreciate the value of hard work, friendship and respecting one another.

He would use the opportunity to train with Arsenal coaches to build on his football and coaching skills and enrich the programmes that he leads. He would also share his knowledge with other local coaches to improve the standard of training in the community.

Ahmed Ali, Hargeisa, Somaliland

The civil war meant that Ahmed’s opportunities to play were constrained and like many other kids, he ended up playing football in the streets and unsafe areas of Hargeisa. After moving away to the UK and coaching, he returned home to increase the opportunities for both boys and girls to participate in football through the Somaliland Football Academy. Through the academy, he has developed the Somaliland Level 1 coaching course and they have trained over 120 male and females coaches in the past year.

Hamisi Mohamed, from Nairobi, Kenya

Hamisi is a founder of Young Talents Soccer Academy, a mixed academy in Embul Bul, Ngong. Together with his friends, Hamisi started the academy over 10 years ago to bring young members of his community together and help them avoid falling into tribalism, drug abuse and crime. He was involved in the Premier Skills programme, a joint venture between the Premier League and the British Council, which further reinforced his belief that football can make a positive impact on society.

If he were to win a coaching session with Arsenal, he would use the opportunity to benefit his local community. He would share the knowledge he gains with others and uses it to enrich coaching programs designed to address societal issues.

Innocents Yeboah-Num, from Abease, Pru West District, Ghana

Innocents founded Madonna Sporting Club in Abease in the Pru West District. Passionate about football, he believes that it has the power to lift people out of poverty and is committed to helping children reach their full potential.

He has been teaching under 12, under 15 and under 17 teams for the last seven years. If he won a coaching session with Arsenal FC, he would organise training programmes to share his experience with other coaches and enhance community football across the country.

Tersia Davids from Cape Town, South Africa

Tersia’s love of football developed during her primary school days. She graduated from university with a degree in Sports Conditioning and Personal Training and now coaches at Islamia College in Lansdowne, Cape Town. Her coaching style reflects her passion for the sport and she enjoys creating a fun environment for the children that she trains.

She continues to compete as a player for Santos Ladies F.C. and would use the opportunity to train with Arsenal to help her to achieve her long-term goal of setting up an academy to teach girls and boys the foundations of football.

Titus Tongesai Sanangurai, Harare, Zimbabwe

Titus began coaching during his years as a player attached to the 1st Division side of DStv Rangers. Having secured his CAF 'A;' coaching licence, he joined the Rangers’ coaching staff and his passion for developing young talent led him to coach the DStv Rangers Junior Team. When the team was disbanded he went on to secure support from Old Mutual for grounds and equipment enabling him to set up his own team, Big Stuff Youth Soccer Team. The academy-style team has grown from 6 to 60 players in 2 years.

Having benefited from training from volunteers, Titus says he feels a responsibility to give back. 1 in 4 players at Big Stuff Youth are women and Titus expressed an interest in using the Future Stars experience to highlight the opportunities that exist for female players and to help to create new opportunities for both girls and boys. He believes the experience will help him to open doors to exchange ideas and improve communication at an international level.

Beer, Drinking in Nigeria: The brands you have forgotten about

Forgotten beer brands of the 80s and 90s

Beer brands don't last as they come in eras and nothing is guaranteed. Thus, enjoy this throwback to the 90s with the beer brands our fathers drank and enjoyed

First off, if you know five of the beer brands on this list, you are from a family of human breweries, walking, breaking and speaking pidgin, while occasionally eating swallow and draw soup.

Second off, you need to go and marry, altar is waiting for you… Pause. By “go and marry,” we are only talking about the men, not the women, who have a right to marry AT ANYTIME.

On September 26, 2018, Pulse did a breakdown of your favourite beer brands by location and geopolitical zones, to know which companies you are sowing your salaries to. As a follow-up, Pulse brings a throwback article to some of the favourite Nigerian beer brands, now forgotten.

The starter pack for consumption usually includes a beer mug which Nigerians call, ‘Tumbler’ and a saucer to contain whatever edible the beer is going to soundtrack or ‘drunk-track’ — whichever suits you. Some of these brands have gone out of business, while some have rebranded and are now looking to steal market shares.

Without further bland jokes, enjoy the list;

1.) Tusk

This brand, I first saw with my Grandfather and boy, was it consumed with incredible love in Ondo and Ekiti States, Nigeria?

Currently, the brand is produced by Sona Breweries in Nigeria. The brand was a smooth blend, rich in lager and premium alcohol like Nigerians like.

2.) Wilfort

From the stout family. It’s not really known whether this brand ever had a dedicated following, but it was definitely rich in markets till the late 2000s. While it is still in production, also by Sona Breweries, it never really had a better following in one market that the other.

It probably had a spread of following across Nigeria.

3.) Top Beer

This brand enjoyed great following in Ekiti State, Nigeria. It was contained in a green bottle and had slightly sharper taste than the smooth and dull beer brands.

The brand is now obsolete and the internet is not even filled with any history of it. What a way to treat a legendary beer.

4.) Harp

A legendary beer produced by Guinness, it started production for the Nigerian market in 1974, in Guinness’ brewery, Benin Nigeria. Its first global production was however in 1960, England.

The beer enjoyed its best Nigerian run in the 80s and 90s when brand diversity of beer first became an issue of Nigerian demand. Housed in a green bottle and emblazoned with the symbol of a trademarked harp, it is smooth and sometimes was an alternative to Star for Nigerian beer lovers.

5.) Kroneburg Beer

It never was a mainstay with the Nigerian ‘mekunu’ as it majorly resonated with the bourgeoisie and their bougie parties. It was too tush and classy for us.

What use is a Nigerian beer that seems like Hunter’s or Stella Artois to Nigerians?? It is manufactured by Kroneburg Brewery.

Guinness: What Nigerians believed about the Stout in the 70s and 80s

Guiness Stout menstrual cramps

Nigerians believed it was low on sugar and was good for clearing bile and treating menstrual cramps

Over the week commencing September 23, 2018, Pulse has curated content on Jedi and beer brands, celebrating and critiquing the Nigerian drinking culture.

This time, Pulse examines how our grandparents perceived Guinness Stout and its effectiveness in the 70s and 80s as well as what they used it for.

The brand was first exported to Sierra Leone in 1827 and soon became popular. In 1963, Guinness commenced making Ikeja, Lagos the first manufacture brewery outside Britain.

A short while later, Guinness Nigeria was listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange. Since then, the company has expanded to Benin, Ogba, and Aba while creating other brands like Harp.

All the while, Guinness has championed some of the most memorable ad campaigns like Made of Black, that resonated with football lovers and ‘My Friend Udeme’

These campaigns only sought to reinforce its popularity with Nigerians by the generation. It has never been stale. What however catches the fancy is the belief it created in Nigerians.

When it started gaining popularity in Nigeria circa 1970, a seasoned teacher, Mrs. Udodiong and culture enthusiast, says, “Nigerians loved it do the taste and it created a loyalty amongst Nigerians, it has since not stopped.

During the chat, she revealed that the stout resonated with Nigerians for its dark colour and bitter taste which ticked the Nigerian definition of “healthy.

ALSO READ: The top brands currently consumed in Nigeria by geopolitical zone

Why did we think it healthy?

As noted in the article about Jedi on September 25, 2018, Nigerians and Africans are familiar with herbs, which are usually funnily coloured and bitter.

The same reason why Nigerians misconstrue Jedi as a herbal mixture like ‘Àgbo’, is the same reason why they accepted and resonated with Guinness stout.

Guinness stout is rich in sugar

It was also misconceived that it contains little no sugar and that has been debunked by Real Beer which pegs the sugar content at 14 grams and 176 calories.

For context, Coke that is deemed too sweet contains just 11 grams of sugar. It makes a joke of what out grandparents held as sacrosanct in Guinness stout.

According to Mrs. Udodiong, “Our parents thought it was medicinal and healthy, compared to other brands, because it was bitter and dark in colour.”

ALSO READ: Here is why viewing centres are better for Champions League nights than Bars and Lounges

Our grandparents also gave it their menstruating daughters to douse menstrual cramps

Menstrual cramps are not funny. For some women, it is also unbelievable what they go through when they are on their period.

It is then not beyond conception that Nigerian parents felt the alcohol and supposed medicinal purposes could help douse the sharp pain of menstrual cramps.

Mrs. Udodiong couldn’t confirm or deny whether it actually worked, but she did confirm that they only supposed this angle because of what they felt.

She said, “Our fathers even gave us stout because they felt it was medicicinaal during menstruation for cramps.

Do we agree?

No, we don’t. Guinness Stout is just another beer to be enjoyed. It does not clear bile, neither is it low on sugar nor does it cure menstrual cramps.

Video: Employee caught spitting in customers’ pizza on tape

Viewer discretion advised.

A video that shows a food service worker at Comerica Park in Detroit spitting on pizza intended for customers has gone viral and the employee has now been fired and arrested.

The incident happened on Friday, September 21, 2018, when Detroit Tigers hosted the Kansas City Royals.

The video posted to Instagram by another employee shows a food service worker at Comerica Park in Detroit spitting on the pizza, then rubbing the sauce in it.

Sharing the video online, Quinelle May wrote:

I was sent home early today because I didn’t have on my Comerica Park shirt and they say I was at the bathroom for too long. So they yelled at me and told me to go home.

But since they made me go home early I couldn’t wait until after the game to tell them an employee was spitting in customer pizzas!!! ???#detroittigers#worldstar #detroit

The customers don’t deserve this!! This is disgusting! And for the company to threaten me and let me go for exposing this video to the fans is also disgusting!!?

Quinelle May said the worker who spat in the food was “mad and having a bad day” and also claimed to have done it in the past.

May said after he recorded the video, he went to the bathroom looking around to tell people about the video, but couldn’t find anybody.

He said his managers got mad at him and shut him down when they tried to tell them.

Officials say the employee is in police custody and could face charges.

As soon as we became aware through social media of potential food tampering Friday night, we immediately closed that food stand and disposed of all the product.

Food safety is our top priority and we will take any appropriate action necessary to protect our guests.

Though May says he’s been fired for posting the video online, a spokesperson for Detroit Sportservice says May has not been fired but was suspended. They released the following statement:

The employee who filmed and posted the video was sent home from the game Friday evening on an unrelated uniform violation prior to us learning about the food tampering via the video being posted on social media.

Our only subsequent communication with that employee was to let him know that he would not be working Saturday or Sunday.

No one acting in an official work capacity asked him to remove the video. We referred information regarding the video to the Detroit Police Department and they have told us it is an active investigation.
