Cleric warns staff, inmates against hard drugs in Onitsha prison

By Nwabueze Okonkwo

ONITSHA — The Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province, His Grace, Most Rev. Valerian Okeke, yesterday warned staff and inmates of the Nigerian Prisons Service, NPS, Onitsha, Anambra State to stop smuggling Indian hemp and other substances to inmates in the prison custody.

He said smuggling hemp or other substances into the prison for the inmates posed a great danger to the entire society.

According to him, it would definitely have an adverse effect in the efforts by the government and individuals to reform the inmates in such a way that after serving their prison terms, they would come out as better citizens than they were before they went to jail.

Archbishop Okeke who spoke against the backdrop of a complaint lodged to him by Deputy Comptroller of Prisons in-charge of Onitsha Prisons, Ibrahim Usman, alleging that hard drugs usually found their way into the prison yard, frowned that if the trend continued, efforts by the government to reform the inmates would become a fruitless exercise.
