SENATOR Bode Olajumoke has called for the review of the policy which discriminates and excludes private varsities from financial assistance by both state and federal governments.
Olajumoke who is the Chancellor of Achiever University, Owo, Ondo State, made the call during the institution’s 5th convocation ceremony.
He said the call became more pertinent now that the country and its citizens are experiencing a recession.
According to him: ”Most private universities are barely managing to survive because parents are finding it difficult to make ends meet.
“This in turn has affected the enrollment of students and consequently impacted negatively on these private universities’ major source of revenue.
Olajumoke noted that “the graduates of private universities are recruited into our economy where they contribute their acquired skills in the development of the nation.
He appealed to members of the National Assembly to bring the matter to the front burner of national debate noting that it’s long overdue.
However, he submitted that “I do not believe that in extending fundings to private universities, their autonomy should be moderated by the National Universities Commission in terms of standards and other areas as may be put in place.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Samuel Ibiyemi said 34 bagged first-class division,253 second class upper, 135 second class lower while seven are in third class division.
Prof Ibiyemi said that the number of academic programs approved for the institution by the NUC has increased from 12 to 22 when he assumed office three years ago adding that two new programs – Law and Forensic science – would be introduced by2017/2018 academic session.
