ENUGU—THE Principal of Anglican-owned Union Boys Secondary School, Awkunanaw, UBSSA, Enugu, Vern. Dr. Moses Ifeanyieze, has decried the poor reading culture among students of post primary schools.
Ifeanyieze who made the lamentation in Enugu during the meeting of Members and Parents Association, MPA, of the school, pointed out that children don’t develop the interest to read their books any longer but instead, prefer to wile away their time.
“Children don’t want to read any longer. They prefer to play away their time. Can you imagine they are preparing for exams but some of them preoccupy themselves playing in the field.
“We had to suspend some of them for indiscipline. We expelled them and they were asked to sign undertaking to be of good behaviour,” the principal lamented.
To curb indiscipline among students and to encourage scholarship, the principal said the school’s management does not encourage bullying of the junior students by the senior ones. He said they encourage the younger ones to report any case of bullying since their school is a Christian school where high morals are expected.
Ifeanyieze disclosed that they want their students to be computer literate and for this reason, have acquired a number of computers, pointing out that they intend to make sure any student graduating from the school would be proficient in computer knowledge. “The times are changing and we must change with it,” he said.
The principal also disclosed that the school has acquired an e-library donated to them by an alumnus of the school which goes a long way in equipping the students to be in tune with modern ways of acquiring education and compete favourably with students elsewhere in the world.
He announced to the parents that they have abolished all levies except for special projects and they must inform them before such levies take effect.
“We have abolished all levies henceforth. Once you pay your school fees, you are covered except for special projects and the school will inform the parents,” the principal said.
