Bonny graduates forum kick against passage of NLNG amendment Act

BONNY Graduates Forum (BGF) has kicked against the passage of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) amendment Act by the House of Representatives, which gave the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) a levy of 3.0 per cent on NLNG’s profit.

This came as they accused the NDDC of having neglected Bonny community, in provision of amenities for 17 years.

The President, BGF, Mr Frederick Ezekiel,  stated this in a press briefing organised by the forum in Lagos.

Recall that the House of Representatives on May 9, 2017, had passed a bill seeking to amend the NLNG Act (Fiscal, Guarantees, Assurances, and Incentives) subjecting the company to 3per cent NDDC levy.

According to BGF, the amendment of the Act would not be in the interest of Nigeria, the Niger Delta and Bonny community.

His words; “As the youth of Bonny Kingdom, we have been looking forward to the signing of Final Investment Decision (FID) on train 7 and 8.

“Construction of these trains will create 18,000 jobs for us and youths in other Niger Delta communities. These jobs will create and infuse us with skills for life,” he said.

Ezekiel said the amendment would cripple the basic operations of the company.

“We are the most peaceful community providing the major companies with conducive business operating environment. For years, there were no roads, water and electricity in Bonny, but it took NLNG to provide us with these services.

“The only hope for a road is NLNG who have set aside N60 billion to support the construction of the N120 billion Road by government,” he said.

Also, spokesman, Mr Cyril Hart, said that for years of existence, the NDDC has failed to put necessary amenities for Bonny community.

According to Hart, the impact of the Commission’s presence is minimal even in Niger Delta.

“Why then do they want to destroy NLNG Ltd,” he asked. He appealed to Senate not to pass the Act.
