I’ve no plans to leave PDP— SENATOR ORJI

By Anayo Okoli

UMUAHIA—THE immediate past governor of Abia State and Senator representing Abia Central Senatorial district, Senator Theodore Orji, said that contrary to insinuations, he has no plans to leave the main opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

There were speculations that Senator Orji had made plans to abandon the crisis-ridden opposition party for the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, with some political watchers speaking on the purported action.

In a telephone interview  with newsmen, the former governor said that he had never contemplated leaving the PDP for any reason and that joining the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC or any other political party was news to him.

“I have never contemplated leaving the Peoples Democratic Party. At no time did I discuss with anybody and no time did I mention such to any individual or group because it is not in the pipeline and will never be there.

“Why would I want to leave my party, the Peoples Democratic Party? Whatever that is happening in my party is part of the developmental process of our great country. We all cannot and should not be in one political party. That is not how to develop democracy.

“Those spreading the rumours that I have concluded plans to join the APC or any other political party are just being mischievous or economical with the truth. I remain a member of the Peoples Democratic Party and have no intention to jettison my relationship with the party, not now, not tomorrow. I love my party”, Senator Orji said.

He advisd those already jittery over his rumoured defection to relax as he has no such intention.

“Let me tell you, if I decide to leave my party for any other party, the party I am going to join will be very happy because of my antecedents. I have a track record of success as a civil servant and in politics. I have electoral value. So don’t mind them, they just want me to notice them”, he said.

The former governor, who insisted that majority of those from the South East geo-political zone who were leaving or have left the PDP were doing so for personal reasons, pointed out that “Nigerians can serve Nigeria irrespective of their political inclinations.”

He said that abandoning the party because of the crisis “is most uncharitable especially when majority of them have benefitted hugely from it”.

Orji explained that the opposition party was very important for the development of any democracy and that to begin to jump ship at the slighted excuse was something that the electorate must look into and take serious cognizance of in future elections.

Senator Orji who said the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari was doing everything possible to end the hunger in the land, said it calls for all hands to be on deck to bring about economic wellbeing and not which political party one belongs.
