Stakeholder urges implementation of community mental health programme

Mr Kenneth Nwaubani, the Director of Amaudo Itumbauzo Mental Healthcare Services, has called for policies that would sustain the implementation of community mental health programme in the country.

Nwaubani made the call on Thursday during a meeting with the state Commissioner for Health, Dr John Ahukanna, in Umuahia.

According to him, community mental health programme will be used to provide easy access to sustainable mental health services for people living with mental health problems.

Nwaubani said that the prevalence of mental health disorders had made it necessary for relevant agencies to increase mental health awareness campaign.

He urged the state government to provide basic equipment for the community health clinics in the 17 local government areas of the state.

Nwaubani also appealed to the Abia Government to train more psychiatric nurses to replace the retired ones, adding that they will play an important role in increasing the availability of total mental care.

Responding, Ahukanna said that the state government is committed to addressing the treatment gap in mental healthcare as the mental health service department of the ministry is receiving attention.

“The state government has introduced a programme for the upgrade of psychiatric hospitals at Mgboko and Umunnato in order to make the facilities to function optimally,’’ the commissioner said.
