VC counsels parents against imposition of courses on students

IT has become imperative for parents to stop imposition of course of study on their children. This inadvertently affects the performance of the students in higher institutions and the inability of the students to reach their full potentials in life.

Vice-Chancellor of Hallmark University, Professor Segun Odunola, said parental supervision and guidance cannot be underestimated but there should be a limit to this as it may have negative impact on the performance of the students. Odunola who was speaking at the maiden matriculation of the university stated that parents should exercise caution in imposing their personal decisions on their children. He asserted that when career choices are made for the students, the passion to drive the courses is non-existent.

The scholar bemoaned a situation whereby students perform woefully in their academic pursuits as a result of parental influence. He noted that when decisions are taken for children, optimum performance is not feasible. He further charged the students to make appropriate choices that will enhance their academic learning in the school. He counseled them to devote their time and channel their energies to laudable pursuits.

While speaking on the role of government in education, he urged government to be more active in providing infrastructure to accelerate development in the educational sector.

He said the cost of private education funding will reduce drastically if government provides adequate infrastructure to effectively support the private institutions. He said the provision of infrastructure is key to the optimal use of resources.

The chairman , Board of Trustees of the University, Professor Adebayo Akinde enjoined the students to be focused in their academic pursuits and shun all vices that may derail them from the path of excellence.

He said the vision of the founder is to create a world class university with innovation as its bedrock and he charged the students to be dynamic, pro-active and innovative in their approach to learning.

A total number of 26 students took the oath of matriculation at the maiden matriculation ceremony of the school.16 of the students were from the faculty of natural and applied sciences and 10 from the faculty of management and social sciences.

Best Mass Communication  students get WAG  scholarship

In its efforts to reward academic excellence and mentor young graduates to focus on the Advertising profession, Wetherheads Advertising Group Limited has endowed scholarship grants for the best graduating students in Mass communication department at the University of Lagos. The endowment fund of N1miilion naira was endowed in 2012 with the aim to reward the best graduating students with 100,000 cash prize annually for the next 10 years.

The endowment is a veritable avenue through which the company gives back to the society and also achieves its corporate mission of being a socially responsible corporate citizen.

The Group Managing Director, Mr. Abi Iderawunmi said the essence of the scholarship was to nurture the students and provide required support for them to excel in life. He stated that his organization offers internship opportunities to the students in order to deepen their knowledge of their course of study.

Iderawunmi asserted that the company is poised to broaden the horizon of the students beyond the theory of Advertising and marketing communications but providing a concrete platform for practical experience of what they leant in the university. According to him” We believe in talent discovery as this is key to development of our nation”

Iderawunmi who is also the Chairman of Entrepreneur Today, an online publication established for mentoring undergraduates and youths in the art of entrepreneurship affirmed that corporate organizations should develop workable solutions to support social responsibility initiatives.

The Head of Department of Mass Communication, University of Lagos, Dr Sunday Oloruntola commended Wetherheads Advertising Group fpr its unique gesture which is aimed at developing the potentials of the students beyond classroom learning. He enjoined corporate organizations to collaborate with institutions to further address unemployment facing graduates of higher institutions.

Oloruntola state dthat the gate pass for the society is effective mentoring of the young ones as its is appropriate for corporate organizations to invest in the young ones as the future pillars of the country. According to him, corporate social responsibility is the right step in the appropriate direction to sharpen the skills and innate potentials of  youths
