ACTING President Yemi Osinbajo has vowed that the Federal Government will end violence against children just as he said children would be protected.
Against this backdrop, the Federal Government, yesterday, launched the ‘End Violence Against Children’ campaign at the Eagle Square Abuja, venue of this year’s Children’s Day celebration.
Osinbajo explained that the campaign was launched to signal a nation where all children were free from all forms of violence.
Represented by the Minister for Women Affairs and Social Development, Senator Aisha Alhassan, the acting President said the objective of the plan to end violence against children was to adopt policies and laws that prevent and respond to violence and to enhance and scale up efforts towards attaining the objectives.
In his remarks at the event, the FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, promised that the FCT Administration was going to ensure that whoever perpetrates violence against children was brought to book.
Represented by the FCT Permanent Secretary, Dr. Babatope Ajakaiye, the Minister said children deserved to be protected, adding, “It is very sad that any human being would want to perpetrate violence against children; children should be protected, children should be cared for and children should be nurtured because that is the future of this country”.
Brighter future ahead for children — Obiano
Also, yesterday, the governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, in his message on the celebration of Children’s Day, predicted brighter future for the child, saying the typical Anambra child was born with the consciousness to take charge of his or her life.
James Eze, Obiano’s Senior Special Assistant on Media, quoted his principal as assuring that his administration had laid down the necessary foundation that would give the Anambra child a clear chance for self-actualization, no matter the odds.
“Every child matters to the government of Anambra State. That is why my administration has rolled out a robust educational policy that will enhance the ability of our children to compete in a fast globalizing world,” he said.
Amosun advocates protection of children
Ogun State governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, in his message on the Children’s Day celebration, emphasised the need to build a well educated children population that would develop into patriotic and economically responsible citizens, desirable to contribute to socio-economic development.
The governor spoke at the occasion held at the M.K.O Abiola Stadium l, Abeokuta, noted that children must be centre of affection, not only to the teacher, parent or guardian but also the government, which must also see to their welfare and protection.
According to him, the theme of the celebration “Child Protection and Sustainable Development Goals; Issues and Opportunities” was in line with his administration’s various programmes for the children.
Ugwuanyi’s wife preaches morality, peace
In her own message, the wife of Enugu State governor, Mrs. Monica Ugwuanyi, asked children to dedicate themselves to things that could uplift their moral standard and promote peace as future leaders of the country.
Ugwuanyi spoke during the 2017 children’s day celebration held in Enugu, advising them to be serious with their studies, obedient to their parents and shun activities that could undermine their chances of attaining greatness in life.
“My children, remember you are our future leaders, so always do things that will benefit you and that of the society at large,” she added.
