Dickson,Ijaw elders give credence to Pereotubo-led IYC

….As Omare prepares legal battle

By Onozure Dania

Elders of Ijaw nation and the Bayelsa State Government have given credence to the Oweilaemi Pereotubo-led national executive of Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, to pilot the affairs of the body  for the next three years.

At the official hand over of IYC secretariat at Ijaw House Yenagoa, the state Commissioner for Culture and Ijaw National Affairs, Mr. Austin Dressmann, who represented Governor Seriake Dickson, tasked Pereotubo to unite all Ijaw youths and bring the other IYC faction together.

He said: “You know that due to the existing two factions of the IYC, Governor Dickson set up a 9-man eminent committee to look into the issues. Thereafter, the Pereotubo-led executive met substantial parts of the IYC constitution. Our governor and elders in their wisdom endorsed Pereotubo as the 7th National IYC President worldwide.”

Meanwhile, former Commissioner for Transport in Delta State, Mr Ebi Baikefie, has congratulated Pereotubo, noting that he merited the position, taking his pedigree into consideration, which makes him the best man for the position as he will not only be the spokesman for the entire region but also the defender of the people.

Baikefie expressed confidence in  Pereotubo, because  of his ruggedness and steadfastness, adding that he will not disappoint his people.

Pereotubo, in his address, vowed to correct some of the anomalies in the oil sector and in the distribution of federal revenue as it affects the Ijaw nation.

He noted that the recent release of licence for modular refineries with no Niger Deltan included was unacceptable as the issue of non-oil producing people dominating the ownership of oil blocks in the region would be resisted.

He enjoined Eric Omare to heed the words of the elders and to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship, explaining that “In unity, we will collectively surmount those challenges confronting the Ijaw nation.”

Meanwhile, the Eric Omare-led IYC faction has vowed to contest the handing over of IYC secretariat to the Pereotubo- led faction without same being done by a court of law.

Omare said that the action of the elders and Governor Dickson amounted to anarchy, stressing  that as a law abiding Ijaw youth,  he has asked his executive and supporters to remain calm.
