Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi has called on the Muslim Ummah to always be guided by lessons of the Holy Month of Ramadan even after the spiritual exercise.
Bello made the call in a Sallah message to the people of the state to mark the Eid-el-Fitri celebration on Sunday in Lokoja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the governor made the call in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Mr Petra Onyegbule.
According to him, the virtues of Islam must continue to guide Muslims in all their dealings with each other and those of other faith.
“The virtues of Islam are grounded in love for our fellow man and living in peace with all our neighbours.
“Allah (SAW) in His infinite wisdom created us differently and knows best why.
“The lessons of peaceful co-existence, gratitude and benevolence, which we have been taught in the Month of Ramadan must remain with us all through our lives”, he said.
Bello commended everyone who offered prayers for the state and the nation in general during the holy month, saying they would reap the full benefits of their belief in God.
He also commended Nigerians praying for the wellbeing of political and religious leaders, especially President Muhammadu Buhari as he recuperates in a London hospital.
“I felicitate with everyone for seeing the end of this edifying period and say Ramadan Kareem to you all. May the blessings of the Month be yours now and forever”, he added.
The Senator representing Kogi Central senatorial district, Ahmed Ogembe also urged Muslims to sustain the prayers and supplications exhibited while the Ramadan fast lasted.
Ogembe gave the admonition in a statement while felicitating with Muslims on the successful completion of the mandatory fasting period.
He said for the nation to get back on the path of economic recovery, the place of prayers and supplication must be sustained while those saddled with practical responsibilities continue in their assignments.
“I urge Muslims to soak up themselves with the injunctions of our Prophet Muhammad (SWA), which teaches humility, gratitude and brotherly love toward one another.
“I want to appeal to our people not to relent in the prayers and supplication they have exhibited during the month of Ramadan.
“They must keep praying because prayers are the key and answer to our challenges,’’ he said.
The senator urged political office holders to be patriotic in the discharge of their duties by putting the nation’s interest above personal affairs.
He called on the people to extend helping hand to the indigent around them, saying it was part of the Ibadah of the fasting period.
He appealed for peaceful co-existence among people of different ethnic tribes, irrespective of their faith and religion, saying that development could only thrive in a peaceful environment.
In his Sallah message to the people of Plateau, Gov. Simon Lalong of Plateau urged the people to use the period to promote unity and peaceful co-existence.
Lalong said this in a statement signed by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Mr Emmanuel Nanle.
He called on citizens of the state to continue to “live in harmony with one another and practice their religion in love, truth and in peace.”
He stressed that without the virtues of love and tolerance, religion would make no meaning and peace and stability would be elusive in the society.
Lalong urged the Muslim faithful to reflect on the lessons learnt during the Ramadan period and on the significance of fasting as a religious obligation.
He pleaded with them to imbibe the true meaning of Ramadan in their lives as well as reflect on the positive impact it would make in the lives of others.
The governor called for fervent prayers for the recovery of President Muhammadu Buhari and for the peace and unity of Nigeria.
