Five Ways Sheffield Hallam University, UKEmbeds Work Experience Into Degrees

At Sheffield Hallam University in the UK, all of our degrees focus on gaining the experience you’ll need to excel in your chosen career. We make sure that you graduate with the skills and knowledge to make a difference in your new job from day one.

  1. We offer 19,000 work placements every year.

Many of our undergraduate courses offer the opportunity to spend a year working in industry on a paid placement. Our students tell us that placements develop their confidence and practical skills as well as allowing them to make contacts that could help toestablish a network to support their career ambitions.

  1. Many of our courses include projects with a brief from a business.

As part of your course, you might be able to work with a business to tackle a specific issue. For example, our product design students have designed shaving products for Gillette and our marketing students work with major brands including Samsung. Our games design students work with Sony to build and design games for the PlayStation.

  1. Insight from more than 3,500 organisations.

We work closely with 3,500 organisations so you benefit from the experience and knowledge of a huge network of employers. We regularly invite representatives from these organisations to deliver lectures, run workshops and to recruit students at careers fairs on campus.

  1. Work part-time or volunteer alongside your course.

Our students spend more than 15,000 hours each year volunteering through the Students’ Union. There are hundreds of opportunities to make a difference at the same time as gaining valuable work experience that you can use to impress future employers.

  1. Top-rated careers advice

On all of our courses, you have access to a dedicated careers adviser who has specialist knowledge of career prospects in your subject area. We also have a dedicated Careers and Employability Centre where we offer workshops on writing your CV and preparing for job interviews.

Internships – hear from one of our students

Law student Mustafa Warsame worked on a three month internship with a law company in Dubai.

He said: “I took part in client meetings, took trips to court and shadowed solicitors. Not only did I work with seasoned professionals, I also met people from similar backgrounds to me with remarkable and motivating stories. It provided that extra drive to chase my goals and push myself to the limit.”

Placement year – what one of our students says

Environmental science student Jade Roche took a year-long work placement with a social enterprise working to improve waterways for people and wildlife.

“I want to work in an environmental research role looking at ways to stop flooding. This placement is giving me practical experience on the river banks and in the rivers themselves. I’m having a brilliant time and learning so much about my chosen career.”
