Group tasks parents on family values

By Chioma Obinna

THE Board of Lectors, St. Mary Catholic Church, Isolo, Lagos has decried the erosion of Nigerian culture as a result of globalisation, urging parents to revisit the values embedded in the entity called family.

The board contends that as a result of globalisation, the firmness that parents need to nurture their children in the fear of God, has disappeared at the expense of the cherished Nigerian culture.

In his submission, at an annual Parents/Youths Forum organised by the board with a theme; ‘Globalization and Culturalizat-ion, Modern Family Delimma,’ the spiritual director/chaplain of the church’s Board of Lectors, Rev. Father Robert Reuben Wayas noted that colonization of Africa and the attendant development of science and technology has made Africans vulnerable to western ways of life.

“They have made Africans to feel that their culture is inferior in so many ways, even in our homes. It is very hard to ignore because majority of our activities are carried out in foreign languages and whoever was unable to com-municate in the language is considered inferior. That shouldn’t be the case because every culture is unique in its own way,” he said.

Corroborating the above view, the board chairman, Mr. Michael Anosike said African families have continued to grapple with issues of sexuality, family health, personal capacity building, and under which culture to raise their children.

He noted that over the years, the Board had promoted responsible lifestyles, good communication, healthy interaction and better relationship between parents and the youth.

In her lecture entitled: “Global-isation and Culturalization: Modern Family Dilemma,” managing director, TFS Securities and Investment Co. Ltd, Mrs.  Ebiere Fumudoh who described family as an institute of affection and home of love, lamented that globalisation has infiltrated African families with alien cultures.

Fumudoh identified globalisation as a major cause of increasing rates of divorce and outsource of care of the children in the country.

Insisting that many children have shunned family values, she said: “many families have taken to fast foods instead of home-cooked foods and polluting our lives.”
