Hoodlums kill security guard at Ughelli bank

By Perez Brisibe

UGHELLI—A security guard attached to a community bank in Ughelli, Delta State, was Monday killed, when gunmen attacked the bank, carting away a computer and other items.

The remains of the victim, Andrew Okurude, 78, was said to have been recovered near one of the gates of the plaza, where the bank is situated.

The incident is coming just as another gang of hoodlums, Monday evening, shot dead a male guest who lodged at a hotel near Aroh Road Junction, along the East-West Road.

Speaking to Vanguard on the incident, Chief Executive Officer of the bank, Chief Joe, said: “I am not in Delta State as at the moment and don’t have full details of the incident, but the Managing Director, called me on Monday that a security guard at the bank was killed.”

Confirming the incident, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Zanna Ibrahim, explained that the victim had been reported missing by members of his family, who in an earlier report, stated that he left his house on June 22.

According to the police boss, “based on the report, his (victim) place of work at the bank was visited and he was found dead by the gate of the plaza.

“It is assumed that the victim died four days ago. At the time of the visit, his corpse, which has been deposited at the Central Hospital mortuary, Ughelli, for autopsy, had already started decomposing.

“While investigation was ongoing to ascertain the course of death, the manager of the bank came to the station and reported that hoodlums entered their office and made away with their computer and that no money was taken.”
