In a statement entitled: ‘Referendum for Southern Nigeria now’, leaders of the youth groups from the South West, South East and South South, however, warned that any violence unleashed on any Southerner in the North, would be seen as an “attack on the entire people of the South.”
The statement was signed by Messrs Olajide Odumosu (OPC); Sunday Akinuoye (Oodua Liberation Movement, OLM); Oluwole Suleiman (Oodua Nationalist Coalition); Weri Digifa – Supreme Egbesu Assembly, Roland Pereotubo Oweilaemi (IYC President Worldwide), Chief Ani Esin, Michael Ekpo, Samuel Erhahon (Coalition of Edo State Youth; Godwin Okey Ozonweke, Kelvin Okereke and Chijioke Chukwunyere.
The youth leaders said the referendum was necessary following the ultimatum handed down by Arewa youths to Igbo to vacate the region by October 1.
The statement reads in part: “We of Southern Nigeria Youth Coalition (SNYC) comprising of all viable ethnic nationality Youth groups in Southern Nigeria have carefully gone through the letter by the Youths of Northern Nigeria extraction (Arewa Youths) to the Acting President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo to use his office to dismember the South Eastern part of Nigeria.
