Succour comes the way of Mbaise blind students

By Chidi Nkwopara, OWERRI.

Succour came the way of visually impaired students of Mbaise Secondary School, as they smiled home with varying gift items, courtesy of an all female philanthropic organization, Unique Friends Circle.

The group, which is principally composed of wives of medical practitioners in Imo State, doled out salutary packages, including but not limited to food items like rice, beverages and other relevant needs of visually impaired students.

Making the presentation to the students, the President, Mrs. Rita Akakwam, explained that their gesture was aimed at “putting smiles on the faces of these unfortunate children with visual impairment”.

According to Mrs. Akakwam, “we exhaustively discussed the peculiar problems facing these class of students, particularly those preparing for external examinations and decided to tackle some of the problems”.

While reiterating that they were moved by the plight of the students, Mrs. Akakwam however advised the students to stoutly resist the temptation of surrendering to their fate.

Speaking also, the College Principal, Mrs. Joyce Anyanwu, commended the women for setting the pace in providing welfare packages for the visually challenged students in her school.

She disclosed that these set of students were in various classes, including the examination classes and appealed to other humanitarian organizations to follow the footsteps of Unique Friendship Circle.

In his own contribution, the teacher in charge of the blind students, Mr. Simon Ojinere, said that “some of the ex-students of the school are presently studying in various universities in Nigeria”.

He confirmed that although he has retired from service, he felt the need to keep helping the students, free of charge, since government was yet to send another teacher to replace him.

Tears however rolled down the cheeks of the women, when one of the benefitting students, Master Nkemakolam Ihenacho, said a soul-touching vote of thanks and closing prayer.
