73-yr-old farmer beheaded as flood kills two siblings in Anambra

By Vincent Ujumadu, Awka

IT was a weekend of grief for two families in Anambra State as a 73-year old man, Mr. Obadiah Eliaku, was reportedly beheaded in his farm at Akuzor Nkpor, Idemili North local government area by unknown persons, while two children of the same parents, aged 12 and six years, lost their lives following a heavy flooding at Okpoko area in Ogbaru local government area.

It was gathered that Obadiah had gone to his farm on the bank of Nkisi River with his son, Cheta, and was allegedly attacked by some people wielding different weapons.

His son, however, managed to escape and raised the alarm which attracted residents who later found the headless body of the farmer.

A community leader, Mr. Chris Udeze, who spoke on the matter, said the incident might not be unconnected with the protracted land dispute between Nkpor and Oze communities in Oyi local government area.

Speaking on the incident, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Garba Umar, urged communities in the state to follow due process in resolving land disputes, assuring that the killers of the farmer would be tracked and made to face the full weight of the law.

In the other incident, the two children of Mr. and Mrs. John Obasi were confirmed dead following heavy flooding at Okpoko in Ogbaru after a downpour.

The rainfall, which started on Friday night, lasted till the early morning of yesterday, resulting in the destruction of property, including churches, and submerged houses and vehicles in parts of Onitsha, Obosi and Okpoko.

President General of Okpoko community, Chief Linus Ezenwamma, blamed the flooding on indiscriminate dumping of refuse leading to blockage of drainage.

Consoling the parents of the deceased children, Mr. Godwin Ezeemo, a governorship aspirant in the state, attributed the unfortunate incident to lack of proper town planning and drainage system in the area.
