CVR: INEC announces 68,825 new registered voters in Bayelsa

By Samuel Oyadongha

YENAGOA—THE Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, yesterday said that it recorded 68,825 new registrants at the close of the first phase of the Continuous Voters Registration exercise in the eight local government areas of Bayelsa State.

The commission said though there were technical hitches from data collation machines used during the exercise, it was generally peaceful in all the registration centres.

It described as impressive the large turn out of eligible Bayelsans, noting that its officials at some point had to solicit the assistance to check the huge crowd of anxious registrants.

Speaking to newsmen in Yenagoa, the Administrative Secretary of the commission in the state, Mr Clement Oha, said though the officials of INEC were still collating data and interpreting them, the final figure will be released at an undisclosed date.

Flanked by the Head of Department, Operations, Mr. Victor Agbonwaneten, the Head of Department, General Administration, Mr. Dennis Eldred and the Head of Department, Voters Education and Publicity, Timidi Wariowe,  the commission administrative scribe explained that out of the recorded 68,825 new registrants, 1,057 transferred their registration from within and outside Bayelsa.
