Go for regular cervical screening, Expert urges women

The Enugu State Director of Public Health, Dr Okechukwu Ossai, has urged women to go for cervical screening on a regular basis to prevent the disease at early stage.

Ossai gave the advice in an interview in Enugu.

He said it was important for women to go for cervical cancer screening always, reminding them that its symptoms tended to appear only after it had reached an advanced stage.

The director further explained that the symptoms of the disease include irregular, inter-menstrual cycle and abnormal vaginal, adding that bleeding might occur after several inter-course.

Others he also said include fatigue, weight loss and loss of appetite, vaginal discomfort or odorous discharge.

He commended the Marie Stopes Foundation International for collaborating with the state ministry of health in providing adequate medical assistants to the citizens in cancer screening, sexual and reproductive health services.

“Marie Stopes International is an NGO which has been supporting the state health ministry.

‘’The NGO is into family planning services as well as cervical cancer screening.

“For the past five years, our collaboration with the NGO has been an integral part of intervention in maternal, child and reproductive health care for the citizens,

‘’Its services on health to the people of Enugu State are remarkable,” he said.
