Man in court for allegedly stealing car worth N1.3m

A 47-year-old man, Richard Lawanson, who allegedly stole a car valued at N1.3 million was on Friday arraigned in an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The defendant, a transporter who resides at Egbeda, a suburb of Lagos, is being tried for alleged causing breach of peace and stealing.

The prosecutor, Insp. Clifford Ogu, told the court that the offences were committed in April 2014 at Egbeda, Lagos.
Ogu said that the complainant, Mrs Patience Chukwendu, gave an Hyundai Elantra car, valued at N1.3 million on hire purchase to the defendant.

”The accused was supposed to be paying N35,000 monthly into the owner’s account until the money was fully paid.
“The accused only paid for one

month and disappeared, all efforts to locate him failed, ” he said.
Ogu added that the accused changed his sim card.

“The police got information about his where about and they swung to action.“Hence, he was arrested and brought to the court,’’ he said.

The offences contravened Sections 168(d) and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Taiwo Akanni, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Akanni adjourned the case until July 31 for mention.
