The Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies in Lagos State, Saturday, embarked on a route march, aimed, among other things, to assure Lagosians of its commitment to prevent any external or internal aggression in the state.
The route march which was organised by the Western Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy, had over 1000 security personnel drawn from the Military, Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Nigeria Prison Service, Federal Road Safety Corps among others.
Speaking at the end of the route march, which began from the Naval Training Command, Apapa, its Flag Officer Commanding, Rear Admiral Obi Ofodili, who led the personnel, stated that the march was a quarterly excercise..
Ofodili explained that the route march was an initiative of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas, adding that it was also geared towards ascertaining the physical fitness and mental alertness of personnel.
According to Ofodili : “One of the objectives of this quarterly route march is to reassure the public that we are in charge. It is a way of reassuring the public that all is well and that every situation is under control.
“I have no doubt that it would strengthen the existing relationship between members of the armed forces and other security operatives. We want to build and sustain good relationship with paramilitary agencies.
“So, wherever we find ourselves, please let us show respect to one another,”he said.
Among senior officers who partook in the exercise despite the heavy down pour were Admiral Superintendent, Naval Ordinance Depot, Rear Admiral Dogara Yusuf; Chief Staff Officer, Western Naval Command (WNC) Rear Admiral Matthew Emuekpere, among others.
