Niger gov’s wife calls for renovation of School for Special Education

Dr Amina Bello, wife of the Niger Governor, on Monday called for the immediate renovation of the school for children with disabilities tagged: School for Special Education, in Minna.

Bello made the call after inspecting the deteriorating facilities in the school.

The governor’s wife was accompanied to the school by Mrs Mairam Kolo, Director-General of the state’s Child Right Protection Agency.

Bello said that the school facilities such as sucker-way and borehole had collapsed and needed urgent repairs.

According to her, the school clinic no longer has the necessary drugs.
“I was told that some of the blind students at times fall inside the broken sucker-way. I have seen the bad state of the female and male hostels.
“The situation is worrisome and no child should be allowed to live in such an environment, the toilets’ facilities are in bad shape.

“Students sleep on mats because there are no good mattresses for them. I will take the matter to the governor for immediate action,” she said.
She also asked the school authorities to write letters to the state commissioners for Education and Health through the child right agency for appropriate action.

According to her, the school requires the deployment of additional nurses and inclusion of the school into the state’s development programmes.

Kolo commended the wife of the governor for taking a proactive measure to ensure an enabling environment for the children.
According to her, right to healthy living and protection was one of the cardinal rights of children with disabilities.
“What the governor’s wife has done is what a mother is expected to do for children to improve their means of livelihood and protect them against all forms of abuses.
“As you can see, the female hostel is not well protected; anybody can gain access inside and abuse them, especially the blind ones who cannot see.
“This school harbours over 600 students from the state and some parts of the country,” Kolo said.
