As part of the efforts to increase egg consumption in Nigeria to 300 per person annually, Funtuna Foods and Bottling Company has introduced ‘coloured hard boiled eggs’ into the market.
The company said the product was targeted at children and families.
The Executive Director of Funtuna Foods and Bottling Company, Mrs. Tolulola Olumide, who spoke at the company’s production plant located in Ogere, Ogun State, said the egg was inspired by what was witnessed during an international food exhibition.
Olumide expressed concern over the per-capita egg consumption in Nigeria which she observed was lower than the global average. Nigerians on average, according to her, consume less than 80 eggs per person annually while China, Mexico and the United States consume over 300 eggs per person annually, and in South-Africa, each person consumes 180 eggs per year. This, she said, highlights the opportunities for growth and expansion for the egg industry in Nigeria.
She said it was wrong to restrict egg consumption to festive seasons or the World Egg Day celebrated every first week of October.
