OGULAGHA – YOUTHS from Ogulagha kingdom, Saturday gave reasons why they threatened to shut down oil operations in Forcados-Ogulagha kingdom in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, stating that it was a call to draw the attention of the government to their plight and not originally meant to smack tension in the region.
The youths had last Sunday, issued a 5-day ultimatum for the release of ex-militant leader and member, Delta State Waterways Security Committee, DWSC, “Gen” Bonny Gawei else they would shut down oil operations at Forcados Export Terminal, Forcados North and South Bank Flow Stations, Yokri.
Ogulagha youth leader and chairman, Ijaw Youth Council, IYC in Ogulagha kingdom, Doubra Okotete, in a statement, said: “Upon the arrest of Gawei, council members met to push for his release by agreeing to mobilise our women and youths to demonstrate peacefully for his release.
“Elders, stakeholders and groups within our kingdom have engaged us, hence we have listened to them, reconsidered our earlier position and agreed not to go ahead with the peaceful protest and it is important we make our position known to the general public.
“As host to numerous multinational companies and oil facilities within our kingdom which we have zealously protected over the years, we think our initial position of wanting to resort to shutting down these facilities was erroneously reached and the whole idea was over flogged and misconstrued.”
