Children reveal how father beat their mother to death

A 42-year-old man, John Owobi, has been exposed by his children as having beaten their mother to death in their Oko-Oba home in Lagos.

A fight, which cause was unknown at press time, broke out between the couple in their room and parlour self-contained on 42 Musliu Street, during which neighbours claimed to have heard the deceased, Theresa, shouting for help.

However, when neighbours went to ascertain the cause of the shout, they reportedly met the lifeless body of Theresa on the ground. Upon inquiry, her husband claimed she drank a bottle of insecticide, adding that he had once prevented her from taking the poisonous substance.

However, a curious neighbour was said to have taken one of the suspect’s children aside, where he opened up, stating that his father killed his mother.

The fight

A neighbour, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “We heard Mrs Owobi crying throughout the night. By morning, we were told she committed suicide by drinking poison.

“But no one believed John’s story. The children were taken aside, where they opened up and said that their father told them to say that their mother drank poison.

“The oldest of the children, who is about 13 years, was taken aside to narrate how their mother died. He said that their father beat her throughout the night. He said he later came to tell them that she drank poison and died.”

Police confirm story

When contacted, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Olarinde Famous-Cole, confirmed the incident, adding that autopsy report revealed that the deceased died as a result of internal injuries sustained from severe beatings as well as trauma.

Famous-Cole said: “The suspect went to the station to report that the deceased was found lying dead on the floor in their room.

“He claimed that his wife drank poison. But investiga-tion revealed that he allegedly beat his wife to death.

“When she died, he told his children to say their mum took poison, if anyone asked. Investigation is still ongoing.”
