Minna—Pensioners in Niger State, mainly those under the Contribution Pension Scheme, yesterday, stormed the Niger state House of Assembly to protest the non-payment of their pensions in the last few years.
The pensioners, in their hundreds, carried placards with inscriptions such as “Pass the Law now on CPS,” “We want the law under the new pension scheme passed now,” among others, as they waited, while plenary was going on the floor of the House on the passage of the amended Pension Law.
The legislators eventually repealed the 2015 Niger State Pension Reform Act and amended the Law establishing the Contributory Pension Scheme in the state.
Addressing journalists shortly after, Chairman, House Committee on Information, Alhaji Shuaibu Iya, said the passage of the Bill was not as a result of the protest embarked upon by the pensioners, but was merely a coincidence.
According to him, “we saw wisdom in the passage because it is a legitimate demand which they are entitled to and that was why we passed it.”
Two days ago, Governor Abubakar Bello declared that N5.7 billion was unremitted to the state Pension Board by the state Universal Basic Education and the local government between 2007 and 2015. He vowed that those involved will be brought to book and the money collected back from them.
