Dissolution of DSIEC, amendment suspicious—Political parties

ASABA—COALITION of state Chairmen of Registered Political Parties in Delta State have faulted the dissolution of the state’s Independent Electoral Commission, DSIEC, noting that the tenure of its current members will expire on June 28, 2018.

Chairman of the Coalition, Chief Efe Tobor, in a statement, said: “The proposed amendment to the DSIEC law is still in the House of Assembly and has passed first reading. Dissolving DSIEC, when the amendment is yet to be concluded, gives the impression that the governor is heading for caretaker committees for the 25 local government councils.”

Tobor said the board can only be dissolved when its members are found wanting “or failed in the discharge of their duties.”

His words: “Even the timing of the amendment of the DSIEC law, which is being done close to the October when local government election is supposed to be conducted, is wrong and suspicious.

“The dissolution of DSIEC and the proposed amendment to the law confers undue advantage on Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, over other political parties as it creates room for the constitution of caretaker committees that will be only loyal to the governor and PDP.”
