Religious bodies, others should partner government to tackle insecurity, says Lagos Bishop

The security challenges confronting the country require collective effort including from the church to surmount, says Bishop Akinpelu Johnson of Cathedral Church of St. Jude (Anglican Communion), Ebute Meta, Lagos.

He spoke on Tuesday at a symposium entitled,“Tackling Insecurity and Religious Intolerance: Agenda for the State and Church.”

Newsmen report that the symposium was part of activities marking the 150th anniversary of the church.

Akinpelu said the state and the church had a vital role to play in ensuring the security of lives and property.

“Security is important in our country as insecure people can hardly fulfill their destiny.

“No one is too small to contribute good ideas that will enhance the people’s security and wellbeing,” the cleric said.

“If the Church sticks to the injunction of our Lord Jesus Christ, there will not be insecurity. But rebellious tendency in man is behind insecurity and violence.”

Discussants at the symposium include Ven. Okechukwu Ifionu, Mr Babatunde Ogala, Mrs Morenike Obi-Farinde and Deacon Konyehi while Mr Doyin Owolabi  moderated.

According to Ifionu, insecurity exists when the society is enmeshed in injustice and inequality.

He said:“If Nigeria pursues justice as its main tenet or policy, everyone will be his brother’s keeper.

“There is need to do away with banal tendencies and expose the evil of love of money that is plaguing the society.

“There should be room for dialogue in all spheres of life.”

Other discussants stressed the need for unity, love and freedom of religion among Nigerians.

They were also unanimous in canvassing for job creation for youths and adults in the country as part of efforts to address insecurity.

On Sunday, Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode had opened a concert to kick off the anniversary, with a charge to religious bodies in the country to lead by example.

He listed honesty, integrity and perseverance as necessary virtues for Christians and indeed all Nigerians.

Ambode, an old pupil of St. Jude’s Primary School, Ebute Meta, said the cathedral should be celebrated, saying it is a refuge for embattled Christians, who remained steadfast in their faith despite persecutions.
