18 killed, 6,637 houses destroyed by flood in Jigawa


The Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency have revealed that 18 persons have been killed and 6,637 houses destroyed by flood in about 19 local government areas in the state.

The executive secretary, Alhaji Yusif Sani, made the disclosure during a briefing with newsmen on the activities of the agency on Tuesday, September 20, in Dutse.

Sani blamed the sad occurrence on the current rainy season, explaining that the persons died in Gwaram, Dutse, Jahun, Gumel and Ringim local government areas.

According to the executive secratary, 141 houses were destroyed in Dutse, 419 in Jahun, 525 in Hadejia, 417 in Babura, 525 in Ringim, 822 in Gumel; 529 in Malammadori and 126 in Birninkudu Local Government Areas.

Sani claimed that 68 houses in Taura; 120 in Kazaure; 691 in Maigatari; 336 in Gagarawa; 67 in Buji; 96 in Kirikasamma; 101 in Garki; 856 in Kiyawa; 87 in Kafinhausa; 57 in Gwaram and 54 in Suletankarkar local government areas were also detroyed in the disaster.

He added that some deaths were caused by building collapse, with three persons injured in the crash.

Sani confirmed that the state government has provided cash assistance for the victims, in phases as a way of alleviating their suffering.
