Alleged project abandonment: Bayelsa community drags contractor to EFCC

By Emem Idio

FAMGBE — INDIGENES of Famgbe, a riverine community, located on the banks of Ekoli River in Yenagoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, have dragged a contractor who purportedly abandoned a shore protection project in the area in 2015, before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, accusing him of exposing the community to the hazards of coastal erosion.

President of Famgbe Community Youth Assembly, FCYA, Mr. Oglizibe Agbasa, who spoke to Niger Delta Voice, said that coastal erosion was the greatest threat to the community’s existence.

His words: “The community dragged the contractor to EFCC, which intervened and directed the contractor to return to site. However, I want to use this medium to appeal to whosoever is the contractor to buckle up and return to the site. As a community, we are wary of the peak of the raining season, particularly the months of June and July.”

Mortal fear: Already, we are apprehensive because of the threats posed by coastal erosion, our community is at the risk of been washed off. Already, most parts of the community have been lost to the rampaging erosion.

“Presently the situation is becoming worse and whenever its rains, we have this fear and tension that it might cause havoc. Already, so many families have been rendered homeless and economically we are finding it difficult because our source of livelihood is being threatened,” he said.
