ARISING from its 101st annual conference held in Lagos, the Anwar-ul-Islam Movement of Nigeria has lauded the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government on its achievements on war against corruption and Boko Haram terrorists group. President of the foremost Islamic group, Barr. Mubashir Ojelade made this known while speaking with Vanguard on the just concluded conference held at Anwar-ul-Islam Model College, Oniwaya road, Agege, Lagos.
“We commend the Federal Government for the achievements recorded in the fight against Boko Haram and insurgents in the last two years but no effort should be spared until all terrorist groups are finally crushed. Anybody or group who commits a crime or precipitates violence under the guise of religion should be dealt with under the laws of the land.
“However, the Federal Government must take urgent steps to curb ethno religious clashes and killings across the country. A pro-active multi dimensional and multi disciplinary approach that will involve security agencies, the legislature, the judiciary and community leaders must be adopted to enable the government to deal with and manage such crisis effectively.
“We condemn in strong terms the unending clashes and blood-letting in Southern Kaduna and urge the Federal and Kaduna State Governments to intensify actions that will bring lasting solution to the crisis. The government must be balanced, deep and painstaking in its investigations in view of the fact that clashes have continued to occur in spite of previous enquiries and reports on similar crisis in the region.
“Government must pay greater attention to the plight of refugees and displaced persons in the country particularly the North East and fulfil it’s promise by adopting international best practices and standards in rehabilitating displaced persons. Allegations of fraud and/or misappropriation of funds earmarked for the welfare of displaced persons must be properly investigated and those found culpable prosecuted accordingly. As a panacea to crime, government must take prompt and effective steps to improve the economy and create jobs for millions of unemployed youths on the streets. Like the war against Boko Haram, the war against the economic recession, deprivation, decease, hunger, anger and oppression must be won by the government through sound and sustainable economic policies.
“We salute the achievements of the Federal Government in the fight against corruption but warn that the war is at risk of losing it’s steam or crashing ‘unless certain actions are taken to sustain the present tempo. It is imperative to sensitize the citizens, schools, mosques, churches, market men and women etc., that the war is to be fought by all, not General Muhammadu Buhari alone. A situation where ex-convicts and confirmed treasury looters are being celebrated is a matter of grave concern,” he stated.
The Movement also urged President Buhari to reconsider his economic team, ministers and other appointments made with a view to re-jigging them for better performance.
