YENAGOA—Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Bayelsa State chapter, and the Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, have condemned the murder of Mr Famous Giobaro, a journalist with Bayelsa State Broadcasting Corporation by gunmen on Sunday.
A statement by the chairperson of NAWOJ, Maria Olodi-Osumah and Secretary, Grace Ita-Amagbe, said the news came as a shock to the association, regretting that death took Famous away in his prime when the pen profession was yet to fully savour his contributions.
“Famous Giobaro who was a staff of the Bayelsa State Broadcasting Corporation, as we all know, was hardworking, dedicated to duty and a dependable alley. The vacuum created by his death will be difficult to fill.
“We pray God to grant the family and members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, the courage and strength to overcome the loss. We also call on the security agencies to ensure thorough investigation with a view to bringing the perpetrators of this dastardly act to book,” NAWOJ said.
IYC, in a statement by its factional spokesperson, Henry Iyalla, said: “The murder was an attempt to intimidate and silence the voice of dedicated journalists, who seek true information and expose the hidden actions of mischief makers in society.”
Iyalla said: “We totally condemn this dastardly act of men of the underworld and call on the Inspector General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris and all security agencies to quickly commence the process of a thorough investigation with the aim of bringing the perpetrators to book and ensure that justice is served as well as a deterrent to future occurrence.
“We further commiserate with the immediate family, the Government of Bayelsa State, the Bayelsa Council of NUJ over the demise, and pray that Almighty God grant them the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”
