26 people were, yesterday, burnt to death while 11 others, including three children, sustained serious injuries and burns when their vehicles caught fire in crash that occurred on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The accident, which involved two commercial buses, happened around 7 am close to Quarry area of the expressway.
Two 18-seater commercial buses had head-on collision as they were overtaking. Sunday Vanguard was reliably informed that one of the buses was coming from Lagos end while the other bus was heading in the opposite direction.
It was further gathered that as both buses tried to manoeuvre, they hit each other. The impact of the collision reportedly led to a deafening explosion which trapped the passengers.
The heat of the fire was said to have stopped people who wanted to rescue them.
The victims were reportedly evacuated by a combined team of officers of the Nigeria Police and Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC). Sympathisers, according to the source, could not hold back tears as charred remains of the victims were being transferred into waiting vehicles.
The bodies were said to have been deposited at Adeoyo Hospital, Yemetu, Ibadan while the injured victims were taken to the University College Hospital and Ibadan Central Hospital for treatment.
Confirming the accident, Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Abiodun Odude, through the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adekunle Ajisebutu, said 26 people died in the accident while 11 were injured.
