ABEOKUTA—politicians in Nigeria have been described as a crop of people who have no sense of shame, only out to seek personal gain and not to serve the overall good of the country.
The Bishop of Remo Diocese and Archbishop , Ecclesiastical province of Lagos , Most Rev. Olusina Fape stated this at the 30th memorial service of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, held at Our Saviour’s Anglican Church, Ikenne Remo, Ogun State yesterday.
The Bishop who spoke on the theme: Remembering Chief Obafemi Awolowo in Joyful Service of God and Humanity noted that the current crop of politicians in the country found it convenient to defect from one political party to the other only to satisfy their selfish interest without recourse to the electorate who elected them into different offices .
He said “Today, aspirants into various political offices merely talk about 7 or 6 or 5-point Agenda, as mere rhetoric without full understanding of what they are talking about. That is why our politicians today are mere chameleons and fair weather politicians.
“It is very sad for somebody to have been part of an administration or government for sixteen years, and because he has lost out to another political party in election to now be describing his former political party as corrupt, reckless or irresponsible.
“ It is only in Nigeria this can happen, where people have no sense of shame; and are only out for personal monetary gain and not to serve the overall good of their country.
“Since elections have been won and lost in the United Kingdom, I have never heard that members of different political parties are cross-carpeting from Labour to Conservative; or from Democrat to Republican in the United States of America. Those are countries whose party members operate on political ideologies, unlike Nigeria where politics is a profession with the aim of joining the political party that offers the higher pay. What a shame!”,he said .
The Bishop said politicians who engage in such shameless defection from one political party to the other would suffer the consequences of their actions.
He said ,”That is why I pity many of our politicians who have wasted the destiny of this nation, thinking that they are clever, jumping from one political party to another, claiming they are on a rescue mission, when in actual fact, they are only on a mission of self survival and relevance. They are not clever. Except they ask for forgiveness, they will suffer the consequences of their wrongdoings against this nation together with their upcoming generations” .
While speaking on the virtues of the late sage, the Bishop said despite the fact that Chief Awolowo had died 30 years ago, his contributions to the nation and humanity have continued to speak after him.
Dignitaries at the event include, founder Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare; First lady of Oyo State, Mrs. Florence Ajimobi; former governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel; Afenifere chieftains – Chief Ayo Adebanjo and Senator Femi Okurounmu; Chairman, Awolowo Foundation, Prof. Oladipo Akinkugbe and Elepe of Epe, Oba Adewale Osiberu, among others.
