UMUAHIA—THE people of Oboro Ikwuano have called on the police to be vigilant over an alleged threat by a faction of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, to burn down Michael Okpara University of Agriculture over undisclosed disagreement with the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Francis Otunta.
The NANS faction has been having a running battle with the Vice Chancellor, even calling for his resignation.
The action of the students group had on occasions pitched them against youths from the university community who had warned them not to destroy any or cause crisis in the university on their soil.
Worried by the alleged threat, the traditional ruler of one the host communities, Eze Larry Agwu has called on the police authorities and other security agencies to take the threat and call the factional NANS leader to order.
Rising from an emergency meeting at his palace with executives and members of Ikwuano Youths Leaders Forum, the monarch described as disturbing the alleged threat from the factional NANS leader due to his quarrel with the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Francis Otunta.
“We, the people of Oboro Ikwuano, the host community of the university will not allow anybody to cause mayhem here or to destroy the precious lives of our children studying at MOUAU. To That end, we want the IGP to act proactively on this matter”, Agwu further said.
“As chairman of the Oboro Council of Traditional Rulers, the host community of MOUAU, I know that my people are peace loving and hospitable. But that is not to say that we would allow lawless elements to destroy lives and properties at will. I therefore commend the Executives and members of Ikwuano Youths Leaders Forum whose vigilance has prevented the factional NANS group from carrying out their threats so far. MOUAU is domiciled within Ikwuano LGA, and we have the responsibility to protect it”
