ASABA—CHAIRMAN, Delta State Primary Health Care Development Agency, DSPHCDA, Dr Richard Kofi, has restated the resolve of the agency to adopt the Primary Health Care Under One Roof, PHCUOR, in the state.
Kofi, who spoke at a one-day sensitisation meeting on health sector towards domesticating the National Health Act 2014 in Delta State, said that relevant health policies were enshrined in the SMART agenda of the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa administration.
He said: “The proposed amendment of the DSPHCDA law seeks to establish one Primary Health Centre per Ward in bringing strong, accessible and functional healthcare to the grassroots.”
Chairman, House Committee on Health in the State House of Assembly, Mr Timi Tonye, commended the agency for taking steps to amend the DSPHCDA law, adding that it will bring improved quality and increase the health service delivery of the Primary Health Centres.
Enjoining stakeholders to key into the amendment for the speedy passage of the Act, Timi said that the strength and greatness of a society was not judged by its wealth but rather by the health status of the populace.
On his part, state Coordinator of the United Nations Children Fund, UNICEF, Dr. Eghe Abe stressed the need for revitalisation of the Primary Health Centres.
Noting that PHC should be within reach of all citizens through the “One Primary Health centre per Ward,” Abe said that 80 percent of diseases could be treated at the Primary Health Care centres.
He said that with the re-branding of health centre, more local patients would patronize the centres, insisting that the Ebola virus was effectively combated through primary centres.
The chairman, Association of Local Government of Nigeria, ALGCON, in the state, Mr Malik Ikpokpo advocated better understanding of the new Act, lamenting that the proposed bill did not seek the contribution of council chairmen.
