PORT HAR-COURT— RIVERS State Government has released $4 million to upgrade the state’s Braithwaite Memorial Hospital, BMH.
The governor, Mr. Nyesom Wike, disclosed this yesterday, when he played host to the National President, Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Prof Mike Ogirima, saying that the government had also concluded plans to build an international hospital to cater for cancer, kidney and other related challenges.
Wike said that the hospital will have a helipad, adding that it would reduce medical tourism overseas as it will take care of the rich and others.
He said: “The new specialist hospital that we are working on will stem foreign trips by Nigerians for healthcare services. We want to conserve foreign exchange for the country.”
The governor added that his administration will soon complete an ultra-modern mother and child hospital in Port Harcourt, adding that doctors and other medical workers would be trained on how to use the medical facilities to be acquired for the hospitals.
Wike said his government recently released N500 million for completion of Degema zonal hospital, adding that the government will soon commence phased distribution of vehicles to doctors in its employ.
National President of NMA, Prof Ogirima hailed the governor for his commitment to the development of the health sector.
