An Islamic Scholar, Sheikh Abdul Hakeem Bashar has identified poverty as a major factor responsible for joining bad sects in Islam.
Bashar added some Muslims were brainwashed and deceived with wealth and material things, such as giving out scholarships ; providing employment opportunities and sponsorships of their activities to join these sects.
He made this known during the annual seminar programme organized by the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Abeokuta North Central branch in Abeokuta recently.
He however, appealed to the Muslims to be cautious of the associations and groups they join, adding that in the early 80s, leaders of these groups were lured through publications which are usually sent to the Nigerian embassy from foreign countries.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Amir of MSSN, Abeokuta North Central Branch, Engr. Ma’ruf AbdulHameed said the importance of the seminar was to help in correcting some of the ills of the ummah with the medicine being the Quran and Sunnah. He also appealed to Muslims in the society to be cautious of the activities they engage in so that they don’t afoul of the God’s law.
