ABUJA—Adamawa State Commissioner for Information, Ahmad Sajoh, has decried the near lack of visibility of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, at the national level, asking the party leadership to do more to regain the confidence of Nigerians.
This was even as Sajoh challenged critics in Adamawa to an electoral duel with Governor Jibrilla Bindow, in order to test their popularity.
Speaking with journalists in Abuja, the commissioner said when the former ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, was in power, leadership meetings were regular, either in the Villa or at its national secretariat, with full media coverage but the case is different in APC.
He said: “The APC government at the federal level and even at the level in other states can do a lot more to win the confidence of the populace and I want to say this with emphasis that APC’s visibility is not good enough.
“Even when the PDP was in power, they used to call National Executive Council, NEC, meetings in the Villa in the glare of the media; they used to hold National Executive Council meetings at their headquarters, issue communiqué, the Publicity Secretary has what to tell people but in APC, the case is different.”
While making reference to Adamawa State, Sajoh said the people of Adamawa have truly felt the change mantra, even though some other APC states that were not facing Boko Haram crisis had more to do.
“As far as we are concerned in Adamawa State, with the federal government we believe we were elected on the platform of change and we have benefitted from the change because the biggest change is liberating our land from the marauding Boko Haram insurgents.
‘’For us, that was a bigger change than any other change, because we had even lost our humanity, we had lost our citizenship, people had taken over our land, declared a republic that we didn’t want to belong to, hoisted a flag that we had no allegiance to but today, we are back.
“Two years ago, we started having bombings in Yola, today it is exactly a year without any bombing in Yola or anything. For us, the change was for us to regain back our peace and security so that we can engage in our production activity.
“The change is real but again nationally, we understand that in states that security wasn’t a major challenge, we now know that they want to see much more than securing the North East, they want to see much more development around them and they have the right,” he said.
Responding to critics’ alleged nose-diving in Governor Bindow’s popularity in the state, the commissioner said “anybody that thinks our popularity is nose-diving should wait till we come to elections then he would see that he has no space.”
