A dietician, Dr Ayodeji AbdulRasheed, on Tuesday urged the Federal Government to strengthen the nation’s health sector in order to curb brain drain among the health professionals.
Abdulrasheed, who works at StaMed Nutritional and Health Services in Alimosho, made the plea in an interview with the Newsmen in Lagos.
Brain drain is the departure of educated or professional people from one country, economic sector, or field for another, usually for better pay or living conditions.
AbdulRasheed also described brain drain as the migration of workers from developing countries to developed countries, which he said had done more harm than good on healthcare delivery.
“Brain drain, particularly among medical doctors in Nigeria, has been on the increase and is seriously affecting the nation’s healthcare delivery.
“Poor working conditions, lack of basic amenities and infrastructure had led to many health professionals relocating to other countries to practice.
“It is not only higher salaries that makes health professionals to travel out of the country to practice elsewhere, they are faced with a lot of challenges in discharging their duties in Nigeria,” he said.
AbdulRasheed urged the government to provide better condition of service for the health workers, especially at the teaching and general hospitals across the country.
“Most of our teaching hospitals are deteriorating and there are no medical consumables for our health workers to work with.
“Government should focus on addressing these issues so that health professionals can be motivated to stay and practice in the country.
“This will not only improve quality of our healthcare services, but also better the lives of our patients,” AbdulRasheed said.
He also implored the government to provide adequate research facilities that would enhance research within the country
