Edo Assembly to hold public hearing on Anti-Grazing Bill

By Gabriel Enogholase

BENIN—EDO State House of Assembly will tomorrow hold public hearing on a  bill aimed at checking  cattle rearing and grazing in the state.

Majority  Leader of the House, Mr. Foly Ogedegbe, said that the public debate is an addendum to the ongoing debate at the House of Assembly  for a law to establish the State Cattle Rearing and  Grazing Agency.

Ogedegbe, who represents Owan East state constituency in the state legislature, said: “It is high time government criminalised the nefarious activities of herdsmen.   Just last week, we heard of how herdsmen beheaded a woman in her farm. So, because of the sensitive nature of the bill, we decided to invite members of the public to make inpute.”

Meanwhile, the Cattle Rearing and Grazing bill last week scaled through its second reading in the Assembly.

The legislator representing Ovia North East II, Bright Osayande, had moved the motion for the passage of the bill.

Osayande expressed concern over what he described as the incessant killing of defenceless citizens and destruction of their crops by herdsmen.
