Three professors jostle for CPN leadership

AT the ongoing 2017 IT Professionals Assembly, in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nigerian IT professionals will elect candidates who will pilot the affairs of the Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria, CPN, till 2019. Already, there is deepening anxiety among IT professionals as three academic professors battle for the position of president/chairman of the Council of CPN.

CPN is a body under the Ministry of education charged with the control and supervision of the computing profession in the country. The event with the theme; IT for good governance and economic transformation, is going to provide a vehicle for participants to examine the roles of IT Professionals in national development, the problems, as well as how the potentials of IT Professionals could be harnessed maximally for national development.

As it stands, Prof. Vincent Ele Asor, a Professor of Mathematics, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State; Prof. Sodiya Adesina, Professor of Computer Science and Information Security, Department of Computer Science, Federal University of Agriculture,  Abeokuta, Ogun State; and Professor Charles Onuwa Uwadia, the Head of Department, Computer Science, University of Lagos, are the three candidates jostling for the CPN chairmanship position.

In his manifesto, Prof. Asor, who is the current president of CPN, said he would like to be re-elected for a second tenure to enable him   finish his assignment.

Similarly, in his manifesto, the vice president and chairman in Council of CPN, Prof. Adesina Sodiya, who is contesting for president/chairman of Council listed his achievements which include modelling of MCPD Programme, ensured staff promotion and development, introduction of give-back programme for supporting tertiary institutions, development of a model for developing the study pack for the Computer Professionals Examination (CPE) and enforced openness and transparency in the electoral process.

Another candidate is Prof. Charles Uwadia, who during his tenure as the president of the Nigerian Computer Society, NCS, retooled the Nigerian IT industry to international best practice, said he looks forward to bringing his wealth of experience to drive CPN, if he wins.
