Understanding the power of skill in Christian set-up

By Layi Bamidele

Skill means ability or technical know-how or expertise in a field. Ecclesiastes 9:11 – The race is not for the swift, nor the battle to the strong neither bread to the wise nor riches to men of understand-ing nor favour to men of skill.

In every profession you must be skillful or you cannot excel in life. Something happened about two years ago. I traveled to Ekiti State but while returning, my car developed some mechanical faults. I managed the vehicle to Lagos  and quickly called my mechanic to check it. It took about four mechanics over a month to diagnose the problem and they couldn’t fix it.

I eventually got connected to a skillful man who fixed the pro-blem in three hours. What took four mechanics a month to diag-nose, only took another person three hours to diagnose. From that day I stopped patronising those four mechanics.

In every profession, if you are not skillful you cannot go far in life. What am saying in essence is if you are not skillful in life you cannot stand before kings. Proverbs 22:29 – The bible says seest thou a man diligent or skillful in his business or profess-ion, he will serve before kings and he will not be found in the midst of mean men.

There is nothing you can get done in life without knowing how well to do it. It is the quality of your skill that determines the quality of your output in life. Your fasting, prayer and anointing cannot be substituted for your skill.

There is a language I hate to hear from believers: “If not for the devil, I know where I would have been by now.”

Stop blaming the devil any-where, you are the devil. If you lack skill it is the cheapest way that your destiny can be destroy-ed or ruined. Being skillful does not mean you are gifted, skill can only be developed. I Samuel 16:11-12. This particular scripture emphasized on how God chose David, the youngest of the children of Jesse to be anointed as king in the midst of people that are stronger, taller than him.

When we talk about skill, it has nothing to do with your sense. That is  why I often say in every journey of life, you don’t need too much strength, but you need too much of sense. Psalms 78:70-71 – The bible also emphasized on being skillful in a man’s endeavor. If you look at one of the greatest Footballer of these generation is Lionel Messi. He is always being referred to as a skillful player, he knows what to do with the ball per time.

Before a man becomes skillful, he must have gone through the rigors of all manner of training and exercise.

Skill is applying tactics that will make you do a job excellently. Being skillful has nothing to do with your grammar or certificate. You can be a mechanical engineer and may not be able to loose or tie a bolt. That is an indication that you are not skillful.

Great dreams are killed without skill. In the Christian race today churches neglect skill for prayers. Praying and fasting on a parti-cular thing without giving priority to skill acquisition, is like pouring water in a basket that will not hold water. We must to be experts in our area of specialization. People must know what to do to get what they want.

There are so many Ph.D holders in Africa who are not experts in their fields. Carrying big qualifi-cation is not a guarantee to know how to do a thing at a particular time. When you are lazy, you have no place on earth. Take, for instance, Nigeria is an oil producing nation, but because of bad leadership and corruption she still exports our crude oil abroad to refine before re-importing same fuel to Nigeria.

Because of the greed of a few people the nation’s refineries were ran aground. In the late 70s Singapore or Malaysia came to Nigeria to beg for the seedlings of palm kernel. Nigeria that gave them seedlings then has no palm kernel while Singapore or Mala-ysia is one of the highest prod-ucers of palm oil in the world. Why we are not skillful?

In the world today, it is only a skillful people that make waves. By His grace whenever I travel out on a foreign mission, you will see skilled blacks in top positions in those countries and the whites will give them all what they need to stay there.

It is only  in Africa that we train people and after such training they are either retired or killed be-cause of political or tribal affilia-tions.

If you want to end up great in life, you must be skillful in your job. The world is not after paper qualification instead the world is looking for results. May God help us IJN.
