Don’t call me ‘Mathew’ to avoid my eyes turning red – Obasanjo

By Nwafor Sunday

The 1999 democratically elected president of the federal republic of Nigerian, Mr Olusegun Obasanjo has said that ‘Mathew’ stands for a tax collector and therefore had resolved not to be called by the name to avoid his eyes turning red despite the facts that it was given to him by his parents.

The former Nigerian President made the remark while addressing Engineers at an event organized in his honor by the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE).

According to him, the biblical characterization of the man named Mathew means one who collects tax, in order words Mathew was a tax collector which ‘I AM NOT’, he said.  “I jettison the name because of its biblically meaning, but if anyone wants to see my eyes red, let him call me Mathew”, he said

“The funny thing here is that people are ignorance of their names, interpretation and meanings. For me there is so much attached to a name then we see it.”

He admonished Engineers to always strive to perfection in the performance of their duties, for thus he said, ‘You are the Engine and the heart of any nation that wants life, growth and development’.
