ENUGU—MEMBERS of the Enugu State House of Assembly have passed into law the bill that amended Enugu State Local Government Law, Cap 109, Law of Enugu State, 2004 and to Provide for other Matters Connected Thereto, House Bill No. 9, 2017.
In the same vein, the bill to amend the Enugu State Development Areas Law, 2007 and Other Matters Connected Thereto, House Bill No. 10, 2017, was also passed into law.
The two executive bills presented by the Leader of the House, Okechukwu Ezeugwu, were meant to amend the existing laws so that those who have held positions as either elected chairmen or appointed chairmen in any of the 68 development council areas or the 17 federal recognised local government areas for two consecutive times will not qualify to stand for election for such positions again in Enugu State.
This is coming at the backdrop of the the forthcoming council election at the forth quarter of the year.
On the amendment of the development councils areas law, more new development areas were created to increase the number from 56 to 68, whereas the number of the committees that will supervise the development areas were increased from five to 10.
Representation of women with the amendment has now increased from one to three since the size has increased from five to 10, thereby making the number of the caretaker committees to comprise chairman and secretary, three women and five others who are males.
